Recommend a Lawn Mower that Won't Bog Down
Comments (10)I mow 5 acres once a week with a Kubota Diesel 60" z turn but needed something to use in the ditches and around the tight spots that big mowers can't get into. Since I use a 5 year old Trailmate/Kee at work (High School Bldg & Grds Mgr. my first choice was a Kee. Went to the local mower shop where we purchased the one for the school and discovered it was no longer available commercially but one of the clerks mentioned she had seen one for sale on Craigs List. Wasted no time getting it in my garage, $300 used, (new cost for our school's mower was $900 in 2005). These things are bullet proof, you can't bog them down. They won't win a beauty contest but you CAN NOT KILL THEM. The design is simplistic but it does exactly what it was born to do. Cut The Grass. The belt design saves your engine from damage due to sudden stopage, stumps, rocks... Also the engine does not have to run at such a high RPM to do the job, I guess from the belt pully design, the blade tip speed is still fast enough to get it done and not bog down. By the way, bagging is a big no no. You are throwing away free fertilizer. Think About It. Bagging is a pain any way, having to stop every 5 minutes and dumping the bag and all. My next choice on the list had I not been able to find a used Kee would have been a new SARLO, also made in South Florida where they cut grass practically 12 months out of the year. They also have a Diesel push mower that you can Will to your Great Grand Kids. 1 Gallon of Diesel per 8 hours mowing. The Flordia State Corrections Dept. loves them. They are goober proof and last forever. They have the figures to back them up. I would not waste my time and my money for the "Throw-A-Way" mowers available at the local big box stores. How long due you really expect them to last any way? From the frame to the over worked engine. Three years and it's in the dumpster....See MoreWon't heat up
Comments (16)Probably not enough Nitrogen in the mix. Whether there is enough or maybe too much water depends on your weather the last several months. Adding good rich garden soil is not necessary and earthworms are not significant digesters initially. A pile of material to compost can shrink simply as air is displaced and an 18 inch pile of material is not quite enough volume to get the bacteria that will digest the material really excited. Any once living plant material is good in a compost pile, some people will tell you no "weeds" because they do not understand how things grow. If they said no "weed" seeds, and maybe no "weed" roots that might be understandable, but then of course it is simply easier to say no "weeds". Manure is a good addition to compost, but it does need to have a lot of Nitrogen still readily available, something aged manure does not have. The link below will take you to a very good compost tutorial. Here is a link that might be useful: Composting...See MoreDecorative Gun Case - DH Won't Lock Up Guns!!
Comments (43)One more comment. Many gun death accidents happen with *unloaded guns* So even keeping ammo in a separate location from the gun in not foolproof, because all it takes is for one time to *think* the gun is not loaded when it is. My Dad was a gunsmith growing up. We were taught all the gun safety. On the way back from a Utah deer hunting trip (from So CA) all five of us kids in the back of the van and my parents up front. My oldest brother was carrying in one rifle into the house and blew a hole in the living room ceiling through the roof with the *unloaded* rifle that had traveled home from Utah to So CA in the back of the van. Another incident. Guns were locked up. My twin brothers were crazy anyways as in always doing stuff they shouldn't. One time after school I remember seeing my brothers in the utility room Showing one of their friends some handguns or one handgun. They were handling it. I think they were talking about shooting it in the backyard (can't remember exactly) but I was SCARED. All us kids KNEW not to touch or break into the guns. Period. It was drilled into us. Ummmm teens (boys or girls) have hormones raging through them, curiousity.. they Cannot see the danger as they have immature brains. That is all there is to it! Lets see .. one boy in our neighborhood lost his eye to a BB gun. ANY way to rationalize it and try to make a clear argument there is no excuse for locking away guns. I KNOW it defeats the purpose to have a gun for personal protection if you can't reach it quickly AND it be loaded .. but there is no easy answer! Thought I would share my stories...See MoreBest 4-5 mo. green up/grow up for a muddy KBG/Fescue lawn
Comments (3)If it's a shaded area KBG will not do well. If it's a very shaded area, no grass will do well, maybe red fescue will tolerate it. Tall fescue does not spread at all, neither does ryegrass, and so if there's any spreading to happen it would have to be the KBG. But the KBG is unlikely to thrive in the shade. Also, keep in mind that when you say "fairly small portion", the KBG seed is many times smaller than fescue seed, so if your mix is 90% fescue 10% KBG by weight, it's actually 50%-50% by seed count, so you would end up with a lawn that's half fescue half KBG. You can try and dormant seed some tall fescue into it - spread some seed when it gets really cold so there's no chance of it germinating in the middle of the winter. Once it warms up in the spring it will sprout. It's less than ideal and it may all die when the summer heat comes, but you'll have something green in the spring....See More- 14 years ago
