Hints to deepen Classic Burgundy BM Satin Impervo

I want a deep burgundy for a section of our cabinets. I tried BM's 'Classic Burgundy,' which is a clear, true burgundy, so definitely on the right track, but too bright/light...more like a red. I'm not sure what to try to deepen it, since tints in paint don't work like mixing food coloring or watercolor paints... I want to keep it burgundy, only deeper/darker/richer, without heading toward purple or toward brown/rust. Should I ask them to try adding some black? Or maybe just more of whatever tints it already has? I know it will take some playing, but want a reasonable place to start so I don't spend a fortune on quarts of paint trying to get the right color. Is anyone here an expert on paint mixing who might have a suggestion? I'd hoped the people at the store could help, but the guy who mixed for me only knew how to follow the 'recipes.'

I have tried to find something the right color, so they could 'color match' with the computer, but I haven't found anything yet. Is that my best bet?

when using clear organic pigments from the start the paint should have a tinted primer underneath. did you choose to use a tinted primer?

As far as being able to darken the color you already have,
that may be doubtful, since that can of paint will have already the maximun amount of tint it probably can accept.
If anything, I would not imagine no more than 1/2 to 1 oz. being able to go into that gallon(if any) before you start having binder and adhesion problems.

You certainly don't want to add anymore of the bright blue to the mix and the red their machines use is compared to a napthol red light in a strong pigmented artist acrylic.

You might want to consider doing a glaze over the cabinets to give you more of the deeper burgundy you are going for , or opt for another burgundy with a little red oxide in it.

Yes, used tinted primer and several coats of the paint.

I was afraid of issues like you mentioned if we did any more to this can, which is why I thought I'd check here with those more knowledgable than I am first. The codes for the tints on the can are GY, MA, and RX...I'm only guessing, but maybe gray, maroon, and the red oxide you mentioned?

I have thought about the glaze idea, and may try that...

Bimidji, I painted a builders grade oak vanity in a bathroom about 4 years ago. I did not use a grain filler, because I don't mind seeing grain...let's me know it is real wood :). But some folks do not like to see the grain. After the job was finished, the wood looked pretty, and yes I can see subtle grain. First of all, cleaning and prep is EXTREMELY important on kitchen cabinets. You may think they are clean, but they are going to have a lot of grease, perhaps furniture type products that you have used, etc. that will interfere with the adhesion and integrity of your paint. Here are my steps: *Cleaned well with TSP and water; rinsed well (important). *Lightly sanded the sheen of the old finish with 220 grit sandpaper - to give a "tooth" for pain to grab to. *Cleaned well again (to removing sanding debris). I actually washed it again lightly, when dry I used a tack cloth. You wood is now ready for painting: *Primed with Zinzzer 123 (there are other good primers also;check at your paint store or here on the forum.) *When dry I lightly sanded again to "smooth" out the primer. Otheres may not recommend this - but I like to. *Painted with two coats of Sherwin Williams Pro-Classic Semi-Gloss water-based paint. BM Impervo and Ace Cabinet Coat are also hightly recommended. My vanity looks better than some I see in the big box stores. I also painted the matching medicine cabinet that has the light strip in the top (yeah, dated, but it will do for a while - it's in DH's bathroom and he doesn't know it is dated). THAT WAS NOT EASY, but I was determined. That turned out nice also. I am cheering you on! You can do this - just break it down a few doors at a time; don't let yourself get overwhelmed, and use the best products you can. Also, they are going to look ugly when you put that first coat of primer on; the first coat of paint will look much better, but not perfect, but they will look great after second coat. The Pro-Classic "leveled" really well. One more thing, I used a good 2" Purdy brush and a good quality small foam roller. Brushed the molded edges, rolled any smooth surfaces, but I LIGHTLY went behind my rolled paint to smooth out the stipples. Brush marks do not show if you use the right paint and a light, even stroke. Good Luck with your project! Tuesday

I am not a paint expert for wall paint...and not sure what you were asking for in regard to color suggestions...the other room? the ceilings and trim? the slipcover? Have you done the Sweeby test to help pinpoint your vision? Or have found a certain color scheme that you'd like to use and flow from room to room? We used oil-based BM Satin Impervo for our painted cabinets and are very happy with it. I did a lot of research on the painting forum, and since we needed burgundy, and not pastels, it was the best choice. (Most of the highly recommended cabinet paints, especially the acrylic-based ones, only come in light colors and whites) I brushed some of it, but DH sprayed the rest. It was a more fool-proof method, I think...speaking as the fool! ;-) (I think I tried to back brush and that wasn't a good idea!) If that area next to the fridge will be a catch-all instead of a valuable counter space, keep the full wall look. If it were mine, we'd definitely use it for baking and/or toaster oven, etc. so it'd be too busy to catch stuff. Now under the dish cabinets might be another matter... Yes, you could recess the fridge in the wall...But I was thinking about the microwave in an upper. (Which could be recessed, too, I suppose...or put in the base cabs as you suggested.) Depending on the microwave you have in mind, they usually need more than the standard upper cab depth of 12"...which means they need a deeper upper which can overhang the counter underneath and be kind of in your face. To compensate for that in our kitchen, we have 27 or 28" counters under our microwave, so we still have workspace out front of it and don't have to stand with our faces on the microwave door. ;-) If you recentered the range, there could be some juggling of the cabinet sizes to get it to look the way you'd like. With custom cabs, that shouldn't matter at all...Just depends on if it limits what you want to store in them. Here is a link that might be useful: The Sweeby Test

I just posted on BlackChamois's thread about BM whites, so, if you don't mind, I'll just paste my reply here. I went through more than 15 sample cans of BM whites, a few SW, a Kelly-Moore, and a couple of other oddballs while looking for the right white for me. (This doesn't include the hundreds of white chips I collected also...) My Carrara slabs were very gray, causing me to be cognizant that my white needed to be more white than cream. I found out during my search that in order to "warm up" white to cream, yellow is added to the formula. So a creamier white tended much too yellow for my gray counters. The common BM whites people choose here often were wrong in my space. White Dove has a sickly green-gray undertone in my light. China White and Cloud White were too yellow, as was Mascarpone, Mayonnaise, Mountain Peak White, and Cotton Balls. Gardenia was lovely, but with a touch of pink. Not kidding. There's red in the formula. Chantilly Lace was too starkly white as was Super White. I ended up with Simply White and am very happy. It's cool enough not to appear yellow next to my Carrara, but warm enough not too look startling. Here are a few pics. (Wall painting has now been finished, and I have counter stools. Still no bs.) Picking the right white for you with your counters and your light can be frustrating in the short-run, but so satisfying in the long-run. I liken it to child birth, although not quite as physically painful: short-term pain for long-term gain. Good luck! Oh...and my cabs are painted with BM Satin Impervo Waterborne.

Painting a dresser: paint the drawer sides/insides? Prime?

Thanks guys :) Here's a photo of the dresser: (wi-sailorgirl, can you believe I'm doing something so vintage?!?!?!? It's so not my usual style... but this is the second bath: it's the general household-use bath but ALSO my teen daughter's bathroom. And she REALLY didn't want sleek and modern!) I don't have a photo of the sides of the drawers, but they are mostly still raw wood, except the person who painted it last slopped the maroon paint around the edge onto the dovetail joint. I guess I will try to sand that off and then just paint the fronts. sailorgirl, the lower two drawers won't have glides, they'll remain as-is, with just old-fashioned wooden guide rails. The top two drawers need to be cut back pretty severely, and their center rail removed for the sink, so those two WILL have new, undermount glides installed. I'll try to take some pics of the drawer insides and sides, too... I have a gorgeous piece of Vermont White quartzite (pretty grey, actually) that's been cut to fit the top, with the curvy front, and a white Kohler undermount sink. I'm thinking about doing faceted crystal knobs, too. it's a real departure from my normal style :) I've just laid the radiant floor heat wiring last night and will be pouring the self-levelling compound today. Hey Rhome,
I'm very familiar with ACE, Ralph Lauren, & C2's tinters and colorants...but not BM's colorant system or colorant abbreviatons. MY guesses...
MA...Probably "Magenta", a deep wine/burgundy colorant. This/similiar colorants are VERY sheer.
GY...Probably "Gold-Yellow"...only 50% sure on this one.
RX...You're correct..."Red Oxide", a brick-red.

Onto the actual can...
* What's the "fill-level" of your can?? A "full" gallon is ~ 130 ounces. Most White-bases are filled to 128oz. This leaves 2oz. for colorant.
* The DARK/NEUTRAL/DEEP-bases are way down @ 112-116oz., leaving room for UP TO 14-18oz's of colorant!

>> If you want, post back with your can's info. & formula; and I'll let you know how much more tint it "could" reasonably handle...most likely Black.

The GY is = gray
MA is = magenta
RX is = red oxide

should be albe to accept up to 14oz. What was the exact name of the paint? was this alkyd impervo ?
waterborne- 1 or 2 base. I am thinking more along the lines of their brown tint (more along a burnt umber). Browns also look great glazed over burgundy's.

Here is all the info off the can:

BM Satin Impervo Alkyd Low Lustre Enamel
Ultra Base C235 4B, 29 fl oz

Tints:
Gray: 1 oz, 17 shots, 1 qtr shot
Magenta: 1 oz, 7 shots, 1 half shot
Red oxide: 7 shots, 1 half shot

Following my dad's advice (he's an old hardware man who's done his share of mixing paint), I bought some black, oil-based paint and started mixing little bits at a time into a small amount of the burgundy. As I added black, I painted patches onto my test board...from the bright to darker. About the time it was done and dry, I also came across a sample of Ralph Lauren's Picture Gallery Red. I would never have guessed from the little square, but when matched up, it seemed to match one of my favorite darkened patches. So today I took the paint chip, had it color matched, and made into Satin Impervo. The first coat looks quite promising. (I don't have the can in front of me, but the mix was mostly magenta, some black, some red oxide, and some kind of white...I argued against the white, but the mixing guy insisted it was needed for balance and wouldn't muddy the color, as I feared. He was right.)
