Help me use it up!

The cleaning out the freezer thread got me....well.....cleaning out my freezer!

I tossed several things, but still have a few things that will be good a while longer. However, I need ideas on what to do with a 1 lb tube of braunschweiger and 4 pints of strawberry sauce!

Aside from the old standby cheeseball/pate I can't think of what to do with the braunschweiger. My dad used to slice it and make sandwiches with it, but I never could stomach that!

As for the strawberry sauce...well let's just say I got carried away at the U-Pick farm earlier this year. I made a couple kinds of jam and still had lots of berries so I made sauce. We don't eat a lot of ice cream so would never consume it all as a topping for that.

I bet we could make this thread a weekly or monthly challenge similar to the cookalong or new recipe threads! LOL

All ideas welcome for my BS and SS!

Can't help on the bs (LOL) stuff but make a strawberry soup with the sauce. Just add greek yoghurt, orange juice and sugar to taste and thin out with more water if needed.

For the strawberry sauce, what about...

Strawberry Smoothies (add milk, froz bananas, etc)
Topping for pound cake with whipped cream
Waffle topping
Streawberry shortcake

Yum... now I am craving strawberry sauce!

Hi tomacco, Many of the people that object to its use provided references . I posted one that shows actual results that are counter to conventional wisdom. Wrong once means one can be wrong twice. I also doubt most of the people that use pesticides or herbicides even know what it is. Its easy to wipe out weeds. Just weed cloth it for a while. Plants produce chemical defenses like alkaloids. What is stupid is mono culture and cultural practices that rely on a single measure and the quick kill. Even if round up were non-toxic it would simply breed weeds that will develop immunity to it and simply waste the resource. The best chemicals are the ones produced by plants that always gravitate toward suppression. I don't mind using pyrethins judiciously because it is something that follows this pattern where it knocks down and suppresses without killing and altering the attacking species. It is also a naturally occurring chemical that does break down in sunlight. Quick break down is essential to prevent dilution and attenuated exposure to build resistance.Thats probably why nature made it that way. We have one person with a spray bottle so we can have buildings full of lawyers and accountants doing nothing. They were spraying DDT around as if there was no consequence, same with agent orange. We have seen this attitude before of spray and pray and it nearly killed off the national symbol. Oh my gosh, so many wonderful responses!!! Thank you so much. Well, so far, it's unanimous that I should leave the glass door alone. Perhaps not finding any fabric I liked at the fabric store today was a sign that the glass door is meant to be uncovered. gracie -- I have a collection of thimbles! That will definitely go in there. I also have a few sewing related figurines I can add, too. writersblock -- I have several other baskets besides the one already in there that may work. I'll dig them out. ronbre -- love your idea of adding some trim to the edge of the shelves and covering boxes with fabric or paper. betty -- I'm going to get some of my fabrics out of the boxes its stored in and see how that looks on a shelf. skypathway -- fabric and baskets - always a great combination. I will play around with all these great idea tonight after dinner, see what I come up with and try to post another picture tonight. Thanks again.

TZATZIKI (serves 6-8) 4 cucumbers 3 cloves garlic, peeled & minced 1 TBL olive oil Salt & pepper to taste 2 cups yogurt or yogurt & sour cream mixed Peel & seed the cucumbers & put through a fine grater (not a blender). Allow to drain in a colander until the juices have stopped running. In a small bowl, mash the garlic with the olive oil, salt & pepper. Stir in the cucumbers & yogurt. Chill, covbered for 1 hour or more. ~~Discover Dayton SWEET & SOUR SQUASH (serves 8 ) 4 small zucchini 4 small yellow squash 1/2 cup chopped celery 1 red onion, chopped fine 1 red bell pepper, seeded & chopped 1 cup sherry wine vinegar (white wine vinegar works) 1/2 cup sugar 1/3 cup olive oil 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper Slice the zucchini & yellow squash paper-thin into a large shallow bowl. Add the celery, red onion & bell pepper. Combine the remaining ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil & stir to dissolve the sugar. Pour the dressing over the vegetables while still hot. Cover & marinate at room temperature or chill overnight. It freezes, but you might have to give a good shake or stir when you thaw it. Other than that thawed coconut milk is great in your recipes. But if you made your original dish last week I don't think I'd recommend freezing it now. Same day or day after I'd have frozen it. That's if I was being efficient. Me, who has 3/4's of a quart of buttermilk in the refrigerator right now. I needed a cup (a week ago) and Safeway had only quarts, I bought the quart rather than make another stop at a second store and we don't drink it.

You could mail the bs to me! Well, maybe not. I would just LOVE the sandwiches, with my home made kraut. Mmmmm. So would my husband. But as for what else to do with it........er.........I've no clue.

If you don't like it in sandwiches, why do you have a pound of it in the first place? Or is that one of those things one shouldn't ask? LOL.

I have never tried this, but it is a departure from the "mix with cream cheese and serve it as a dip" recipes. And it DOES beg the question, why DO you have a pound if you don't like it? LOLOLOL!

Braunschweiger Canapes

8 ounces Braunschweiger
1/4 cup Ketchup
1 tablespoon pickle juice
4 each Sweet pickle, sliced 1/8-inch thick
45 each Ritz Crackers

Mix Braunschweiger, Ketchup & Pickle Juice in a bowl. Blend together.
Spread mixture on Ritz Cracker and top with pickle slice.

LOL...I like braunschweiger, just not a slab of it 'tween a couple pieces of bread!

I think I bought it last spring to make said cheeseball/pate. But for reasons unknown to me now, never made said cheeseball/pate.

I have no reason or need to make said cheeseball/pate now, but the BS will probably not keep in the freezer much longer.

Alexa, thanks for the Canape recipe, but to make it I would need to purchase sweet pickles and Ritz crackers. Then 6 months from now I would have to start a thread on what to do with those pickles I found in the back of the fridge and the sorta stale Ritz! LOL

Maybe it will be allright until the holidays and I'll use it for my original intention....

I like the strawberry soup idea as well as the shortcake idea. I used to love straberry shortcake as a kid, but I never think to make it now! Maybe I'll make some when Zoe comes to spend the night in a couple of weeks....

Linda, I love the BS on rye with some sliced onion and mustard, so no help to you, BUT keep some in the freezer. The pooches love it and it is an easy way to get a pill into them.

Things to do with strawberry syrup
Serve it on pancakes or waffles
Mix it with plain yogurt to eat like that or freeze into yogurt pops for kids and adults alike.
Use it as a topping over plain white cake with a dollop of whipped cream or yogurt.
Whirl a banana in a blender and add a bit of milk and strawberry syrup for a delicious smoothie.
Use the syrup as part of the liquid when making icing for a cake or cupcakes
Soak the cake with the syrup when making a trifle.
I'm sure if you put your thinking cap on you can think of lots of ways to use it

Make a Charlotte with the strawberries, or put it over an angelfood cake.
Save the braunschweiger for the holidays...enough pickles and it will be fine.
I love braunschweiger on Jewish seeded rye!

Oh Yum, Jim! I have to say I TOTALLY forgot about braunschweiger sundaes with strawberry sauce!

Charlotte might be good, and even tho I've never made a trifle, it may be time to give it a try!
