Here's a crafty tip of the day.....

If you're making something that requires a closure and you want to use a loop that would go over a button or something, get yourself some of the hair elastics in fun colors, they make great colored elastic loops. I bought a package of 28 yesterday for less than $2, they come in different sizes, I got the thinner ones. And I have all the colors of the rainbow, which is perfect considering most of my fabric choices are bright and cheerful.

Flamey..KOOL!! Thanks-I have pondered how I was going to attach a bedskirt to a fitted sheet I am going to place on the box springs of my grandaughter's bed and still be able to remove it for cleaning. The hook & loop tape is so expensive to go all around a bed. But by sewing buttons onto the sheet and to the top of the bedskirt, then use the hair elastics...seems perfect to me.

I am watering my vegetable garden with soaker hoses. I cut them to the length of the rows and use a splitter to run multiple hoses at one time. I move them every 30 to 60 minutes and do this about once a week unless it rains. I have noticed that the garden soil holds moisture much better than untilled soil. I am watering my baby trees with one gallon jugs. My dad used to drink some kind of tea that he got in 1 gallon plastic jugs. I had him save up enough to fill the bed of my truck. I spend about 3 hours per week watering the trees with the gallon jugs. I will sure be glad when I don't have to keep this up, but right now it's saving my plants. It won't be long before I have bare soil (the grass is not only dead, it's disappearing) spotted with baby trees and a garden. I also spent all day Saturday at Bloomsday. A few of the classes were very educational. Some weren't, but overall I'm very glad I went. We also got some of the free Irises (and paid for more to get a good start on a collection). Deedee, I wish you could have seen the UT gardens about two (?) years ago. There were about time and a half the plants that are currently there. For some reason, they've removed a lot of the beds and many trees and shrubs. They have also removed the pond, the gazebo, and the bogs. It's still a nice place to visit, but I'm not sure why they have chosen to move in some of the directions they have taken. I liked the different plants more than all the new grass. Have you been to the UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge and to Ijams Nature Park? If you haven't, you should definitely check them out. The Arboretum has a fairly good holly collection as well as other trees and perennials. Both the Arboretum and Ijams are good places for short to moderate hikes. Oh, and I almost forgot about Racheff Gardens. It's small and closed on weekends, but it's also definitely worth a visit.

Dave - oh most assuredly. I didn't WANT those tall gangly plants I had 10 days ago. My only concern was if I could save any of them. I'm confident these rootings will turn out to be fine plants in the end. I think a lot of my success (with the longer, leafier cuttings) in large part came from using the warming tray. And the root stimulator. Anyway, it's fun. And gives me an excuse to STILL not clean up the basement...;-D I certainly would not hesitate to do this again. In fact, I'm looking forward to trying this with some suckers...! :-D Kris

I'm sold on the idea of rooting plants. Nowadays, if a cutworm says, "I'm going to kill one of your plants", or if a vine breaks, or whatever, I just take it indoors and re-root it. Not only does it , but it's really rewarding to play nurse to them. I have one plant in my "hospital" right now that I really brought back from thee brink. It is a cucumber whose stem broke during a storm. The wilted leaves weren't lying flat against the stem yet, but they were close. Now they're looking great -- I'll probably take off the humidity bag in a day or two.

I didn't know either. Now, if they can only find a way to keep the end of the plastic wrap from getting lost! I usually take the roll out on purpose because I have more control. Then I cut it with scissors... if I use the metal strip I will slice myself every time. I could kiss the person who invented the slide cutters though (well, if they were cute).

Sharon I agree that it sounds like a great idea. Here is another one you can consider...safety pins. Our mattress is a tempur-pedic and so heavy I couln't possibly lift it even with my husbands help, but I can life the edge enough to slide the bedskirt under the edge and I pin it to a sheet that I had put there....I like to change the bed covers often and this is so easy to do and makes changing the bedskirt so easy. I bought my bedskirts but I just trim all but about six inches of the center part out and leave just a border around the bedskirt and tuck it under the mattress and pin it in place. I buy big pins and it doesn't take many to hold it in place.

I'm not crafty, but I'm good at 'making do' sometimes.

Ruthie, I really like your bedskirt tip..I can't lift the mattress either, but I do like the look of a bedskirt.

I can't think of thing this morning to pass along...darn ol' memory...gotta a tip for that? LOL

Sharon,Seems to me you'd have to use an awful lot of buttons to go around the box spring,and then have it hang properly without it being uneven.Ya know drooping in between buttons.

You can buy pkgs of hook and loop tape in the notions at Joanns for .99 cents a pkg,and i've also seen it at the dollar stores.

For mine i sewed it onto the fitted sheet.Years ago when i had a waterbed,(which i hated) i hot glued velcro to the frame,then sewed the other piece to the bedskirt.It worked well for several years,and when i finally pulled it off,was surprised to see that it didn't leave any marks on the frame.

Sharon, you can also get fusible velcro now, it's pricey but if you wait until some store has a 40% coupon, it's fairly reasonable. You can cut it into 1" pieces and just iron it on from the back, or the front if you cover up the velcro with a cloth. Don't want to melt the plastic! lol

Thanks gals. Sounds like I'd better rethink the Velcro deal. So, my question is this...
After I place the fitted sheet on the box springs-the elastic eges of the sheet will be UNDER the springs-to some extent once it slips down into the frame of the bed rails. WHERE do I place the TOP edge of my bedskirt?? On the EDGE of the TOP of the sheet? (In other words..think of an upsidedown 'L'...do I adhere it starting at the corner of the top of the sheet?

OH-forgot..here's my crafting tip:
When threading the needle on your sewing machine (or even for hand sewing)? Many folks wet the end of the thread before trying to get it thru the eye of the needle. Then it was brought to my attention that when you wet the ends-it makes the fibers in the thread SWELL-thus more difficult to go thru the eye. Use a itsy bit of vaseline on the tip of the thread first.
