white vs wood colored trim

I'm starting on a kitchen remodeling project and my contractor recommended painting my wood trim white to match the painted cabinets.

I'm not sure how this would look as the trim in the rest of my house is wood colored (various states of condition unfortunately). Is it common to have a different colored trim in just one room? Or will this look out of place?

I would recommend taking a look at your whole kitchen remodel, what your design thoughts were, and how that fits with the rest of the house. If the remodeling you are doing is consistent with the rest of the house, then it would make sense that you would leave the wood trim the same as the rest of the house, and in this case, the unpainted trim should match the cabinets. If you are putting a modern kitchen in an older house (for example), then I would consider painting the trim to match the kitchen.

Also ask yourself if the contractor is really experienced in his recommendation. I am sure he has a lot of experience with remodeling, but does most of his other remodels include painting trim and that's what he thinks is best, or does he have a valid point?

I know a lot of people who would consider painting trim not to be a good thing. It doesn't bother me, and I like the way painted trim brightens up a room.

If you are really not sure what to do even after you talk to people, I would say leave the trim alone. If you don't like it in a month or a year, it will be easier to paint it later than to make it natural wood again.

I am sure your kitchen will be beautiful and you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will ask my contractor to wait on painting the kitchen trim until I see what the painted cabinets look like and then make the decision.

I love the look of natural wood but the condition of my cabinets and trim is not the greatest.

I don't usually have a great memory for something I might have seen or read on a forum either. What I've been doing is saving posts. I made a folder in My Documents called GardenWeb, I then make folders inside that for the decorating, new home & other forums. When I see something I want to save, I go to that forum folder, make a new folder with the post name, then save it in that. Yes it makes a lot of folders but it's a bit easier in the long run because when you save a web page, it saves as a page, plus a folder. If I save as one folder, it's easier, then I can add a picture to the folder so that I remember why I saved it.

I do not have my sample of natural wicker in front of me. Don't remember how 'off' white it is. Not sure this helps, but in my family room, the trim is Vanilla Ice Cream, which is a creamy white, and the room is painted Manchester Tan. All the other rooms on my 1st floor are more intense color (Baby Turtle, Moroccon Red, and others) with the same trim. I love the lighter color with the trim.

Depends on the style of the house is my answer. I disagree with the idea that all the trim should match, instead my belief is that all trim of a particular grouping should be treated the same, but the grouping criteria can vary. All interior doors are stained is valid or everything in the basement is painted is valid but flip a coin categorizing just won't work. The house I am selling is from 1931 and has stained wood in the public spaces with white trim in the kitchen, baths, and bedrooms. We did have the center hall crown stripped of a previous owner's paint as it was originally stained and we felt it fit better in the grouping of stained wood. In my 1933 Tudor next house, I chose to paint all the new trim in the basement and finished attic white and not change the existing stained trim. I added crown in the main floor and worked quite diligently over many hours to match the color and finish of the original woodwork. Purchasing, finishing and installing stained trim is very expensive, in time, money or both, and I don't consider it to be worth the expense in a newly built space. I occasionally see new stain woodwork of fantastic quality and design but so much of it either looks cheap or pretentious to my eye, although I know it was an expensive item

Have a look at the Blog posts and Colorography Lab at The Land of Color .com for attributes of lots of popular paint colours. It allows you to compare similar colours in detail. If you are looking at whites/off-whites or indeed any colours, note that the higher the Chroma the more colourful colour. A colour maybe so low in Chroma you might struggle to immediately recognise in which Hue Family it belongs. Even so, every single paint colour does belong to a Hue Family: identifying which, helps you combine colours with greater confidence. Here are some popular whites by comparison.

blue67 - we struggled with the same question. We had the same shade light / pickled oak wood on all our wood trim / doors throughout the house. We just remodeled our kitchen and put in a mix of cherry and painted cabinets. We ultimately decided we didn't want a third color wood in ther and painted the trim the same shade as the painted cabinets. We are VERY pleased with the results - it really ties everything together and it doesn't clash at all with the rest of the house (even in adjacent halls/ rooms where the basebaord changes from painted to stained)
