What color white paint is best with warm-toned wood trim
We purchased a 90's Lindal Cedar post & beam home. There are natural stained wood trim (medium/warm), doors, and beams throughout the entire house. We're currently modernizing the house (modern rustic farmhouse style), and are struggling to choose a color for the walls (I prefer to stay in the white/off-white family but would consider other suggestions). Do we go cooler or warmer in tone? The wood trim is more yellowy and the floors are orangey. Also, we do plan on refinishing the floors and neutralizing the orange tone, but don't want them to clash with the beams, trim, and doors. Can we truly modernize without painting all the trim white?

Comments (32)Okay...all the junk is out! Plan: clean up/mop dust, mortar chips, etc. and spend the evening with my paint samples...narrow down to three or four...paint sample boards, and pick a color. I would love to have time to see the sample boards in different light etc.; but my get-er-done DH scheduled plumbers on Monday and convinced the tile setters to partially grout the shower and come back to finish on Monday too....Grrrr! So...I plan to only paint behind the toilet and area and by bullnose edging. If I pick wrong.....I will not have to do redo the whole room. If I pick the wrong color, I am not worried about repainting near the bullnose; it is the toilet area that worries me. Anyone have a tip for painting behind a toilet that is 1/2 inch from the wall just in case. This is our attempt to correct a horrible inefficient layout...not thrilled about looking at the side of a toilet; but that compromise meant a towel closet in the bathroom (finally), a 60x60 angle shower, and room for a 77" double vanity while eliminating the 3 right angles in the second entrance from the master bath....See MoreBest white paint color for cabinets/trim in North facing rooms
Comments (34)Oh Gosh! I'm going though the same thing. I'm leaning towards Simply White in my north-facing room. I know it can read really yellow in a south-facing room but a warm but still really bright in a north facing room with that cool light coming in. I'm afraid Chantilly white will read too stark. I'm painting both my bedroom and kitchen, one on top of the other with the same northern light. Also, I think of it as a color for modern spaces and I live in an old, historic house. Just not sure I can pull it off. Abbyfaye, I'd love to see your pictures! I have simply white in my hallways and like it. Is it weird to have it in my bedroom and kitchen too? I got samples from samplize and white dove comes across really greige/taupe and not very bright. I'm not loving it at all. Mystery to me why it is so popular. Comments (1)The first thing I would do is get a counter depth fridge in that small space and since the space is tiny I think the same as the walls could be a good idea. Yes! I think a frosty white would do it. I have BM White Dove for my interior walls(which has a gray undertint) and cherry kitchen cabinets. It definitely lowers the "Orangy" factor of the cherry and helps with the yellowness of our white oak flooring.
I also have a grayer blue(magnolias rainy days) paired with our cherry bannister which cherry also has an orangey hue. If you look at a color wheel for the complementary color and that will help any color issue.

Have a look at the Blog posts and Colorography Lab at The Land of Color .com for attributes of lots of popular paint colours. It allows you to compare similar colours in detail.
If you are looking at whites/off-whites or indeed any colours, note that the higher the Chroma the more colourful colour.
A colour maybe so low in Chroma you might struggle to immediately recognise in which Hue Family it belongs. Even so, every single paint colour does belong to a Hue Family: identifying which, helps you combine colours with greater confidence.
