Paint help please: satin on cabs, semigloss on adjacent trim?

Hi, We just had our old-brick fireplace replaced, with a granite surround and base cabinets on each side. I wanted to paint it all the same color as the trim and doors --- probably a B/M marscapone or maybe vanilla icecream or another creamy white --- but am getting stumped on the level of gloss to use.

I was thinking the cabs should be painted in a satin (which is easy b/c the Cabinet Coat paint only seems to come in satin) --- but should the trim on the mantle and around the fireplace, which is right next to the cabinets, be satin or semi gloss)? And what about baseboards and french doors?

I think I've normally used semigloss for trim in the past -- but would it look okay to keep all the trim in satin?

I think it would be fine if you wanted to also use satin on the trim and everything else. The only thing I would keep in mind is semi gloss is easier to clean.

If it were me, I'd only use satin on the cabinets and semi gloss on everything else.

Too funny! I literally just finished cleaning my brush after painting the trim in semi-gloss on my newly installed family room cabs. I painted the cabs in satin with the baseboard / crown trim in semi.

I'm trying to decide what color to paint the mantel / fp surround, either the same or something different. Choices, choices. (The cabs are P&L Creme, a buttery pale yellow.)

If you're using a Benjamin Moore paint I'd use their Satin Impervo, not have it color-matched in Cabinet Coat. Nothing wrong with Cabinet Coat (used it myself pre-Satin Impervo invention), but the Satin Impervo is dynamite and you get just the color you want.

Follow up....(rather long; sorry) First, although it was a very warm day, I painted early in the morning when the temps were about 68F. I did use a Whizz Pro foam roller -- left roller bumps just as if I had used a regular roller. I used a Purdy latex brush - brand new; good quality. I really did not overbrush. So, the bottom line is I decided that I hate this paint. My husband had used it (without Floetrol) on the back sides of a couple of cabinet doors, and the brush marks are deep enough to feel with your fingers. The extender didn't seem to increase the leveling at all. So I called my local Ace hardware to see if they carried the Ace Cabinet paint. Sure, they said. When I got there, it was actually Cabinet Coat that they had. So they mixed up a quart for me in the Ace color, Linen. I spent the evening reading advice about using Cabinet Coat, and I plan to practice on some scrap pieces before I get back to the cabinet doors. (Which I spent the afternoon sanding the Pearl paint off...) So, if I can get Cabinet Coat, and learn how to use it, I think I have a chance. I'm just so disappointed in my local Ben Moore retailer, selling me a crock. The saleswoman kept telling me that if I used quality tools (yes, I used what you sold to me...)it will level out wonderfully with no brush marks. We're having a heat wave, so no painting today. I have not see Pratt and Lambert paint in this area. thanks, I appreciate the help.

I painted trim in our last house with aura and it held up fine. We were only in that house for about 18 months so I can't say anything about durability for longer than that. I recently painted a dresser with advance based on the advice at my local paint source. I found it very hard to work with. They told me it would have a longer open time, but I found it to have an incredibly short open time. Maybe my particular weather at the time I was painting. But it oddly also had a long drying time for me. So it was difficult to work quickly enough while painting, yet I had to wait a full twenty four hours or longer between coats to be able to sand the brush marks, etc that I couldn't get out during painting due to the short open time. It was weird and frustrating. I would suggest buying a small quantity and painting with it to see what you think. There are additives for extending open time, I'm not sure if they are compatible with advance. If you have the same issue I did, maybe a paint shop can make some recommendation to help. The end result is that the finish is very nice, except on the top of the dresser I was painting, where I never could get it quite right.

Thank you all for continuing to help me. I totally understand the clearances for 90 degree corners. But for 45 degree corners ... when I look at my peninsula angles I don't see how the doors could bump into each other any more than a straight run. Door hardware is knobs for the doors and typical cup pulls for drawers. However, those parts of the doors/drawers would never be near each other when opened at a 45 degree angle, unlike actual 90 degree corners. The KD does not seem to be very knowledgeable. When I questioned her during the design phase because it didn't make sense to me then either, she just said fillers are required on all corners on two sides and they can't be cut down because cabs come in 3" sizes. There was no distinction made between a 90 or 45 corner. At the very most it seems one 3" on one side would have been the most needed, such as gr8day (thx for the pic) and Shannonz's. Here is an example of one of the pics I found online w/no fillers it appears on 45 corners. It seems like this would work fine, unless I'm missing something here. Again, we paid a lot of money to these people and I feel like it lowers the aesthetic look of the cabinets, not to mention if I could have had 3" larger cabinets on one or both sides of the two 45 degree angles.

Abby Normal--I'm with you! :-) I'm painting my cabs right now, and I've decided I like a little teeny bit of brushwork! I'm using BM Satin Impervo. It is plenty glossy enough! Once everything is painted, and the lights are shining on them, they will be shiny, even in satin. I was just taking some progress photos of mine (haven't uploaded yet). The sun was streaming in the window, and they looked super shiny! So I vote satin! Especially over oak. :-) francy

rmkitchen -- thank you! I've lived at my Benjamin Moore store in the past, but never used their satin impervo & just found out today that the Cabinet Coat is actually made by them (I was SO excited --sad what gets me excited these days!) I don't know what the difference is, so I'll read up on the web and ask at the store. Please post some pix of your new cabs!! The colors sound lovely.

I've hired a painter, but am really nervous b/c he was the lowest bidder -- and am wondering whether I should chance it or paint the cabs myself. This renovation business is really nail-biting.

But ok, it sounds like satin on the cabs would be fine, and all the rest of the trim, next to the cabs and elsewhere in the room will be fine.

I second RM's recommendation of BM Satin Imprevo. It's fabuluous!
