I painted my dining room over the past week, and just knew that I was going to end up having some horrendous spill. I just seemed to be all thumbs (and elbows and ankles) everytime I picked up the roller or brush. Thankfully, I got lucky and no major spills ensued, although it's something of a miracle that I didn't spill.

Anyway ... I feel for ya.

Years ago when I was painting the nursery with 3 inch primary colored stripes, our 2 year old knocked over a quart of bright orange paint on the carpet...and then walked right through it to tell me he was sorry. He left itty bitty footprints in his wake. We decided to make lemonade out of lemons and splashed some of each color on the floor and let him walk through those colors too. It took forever to dry and was stiff as a board, but looked adorable. Our friends still talk about that room. I couldn't wait to get rid of the carpet, but really missed it when it was gone. :o)

BTW- When you knock it off the ladder I think you reach Founders level. :)

WEeeelll, thank goodness it was on white oak, and it was BM Brandon Beige, which is very similar to some of the tones in white oak, so that was one stroke of luck. Another is that it was Aura, which, I can attest now, cleans up very well with water AND, for the parts you don't get to until they're somewhat congealed (which isn't too long a time, with Aura), they peel up easily as well. If it happens again, I may not do much cleaning other than scooping up excesses until it's dried, and I think the peelability factor will make cleanup will be easier than I had it -- I have it now camouflaging some of the darker spots in the oak, since I couldn't get it out of all the grainlines.

One lesson I did learn is that wood furniture that needs to be refinished anyway and is in such bad condition it's basically bare wood, *soaks* paint up like a sponge and never gives it back. No matter what you try or use or promise...

Some of it was on a C&B wool flat-weave rug, with nowhere *near* as adorable a story to go with it as yours, persnickety. That is truly a wonderful Mommy memory, and a memory of being a wonderful Mommy :) I'm not sure how I'm goign to get it out of the rug, and I'm not sure how in love I am with the rug (so I'm not sure I want to pay $50 to have it cleaned)...it will be one more nail in its coffin, I suspect--I wanted a new rug anyway but we really can't afford one like I really want...c's list here I come...well, just realized I suppose I could turn it over LOL! Rats.

Haven't dumped a whole quart on the floor (close, but more like 1/2 qt), nor have I knocked one off a ladder.

But while doing a faux finish I did step off a ladder into a bucket full of glaze. Big 5 gallon bucket, not full of course, but a large enough container that I got my entire foot flat in there. Stood there one foot in one foot out, looked at my partner and we both burst out laughing. Which of course meant that I immediately had to pee. Sat on the floor with my foot hanging over the bucket, trying NOT to laugh as she wrangled my shoe and sock off my foot and then had to hop to the bathroom. We got into trouble pretty regularly but gawd we laughed a lot while we worked!

I was 7 months pregnant with my daughter , so this was in 1982. Decided to paint our bedroom. I wanted to be safe since I was SO big. So instead of putting me and baby in danger by trying to carry in the step ladder and then climb up on it and paint, I stood on a wooden desk chair with the paint can between my feet...this was a full gallon of cream colored paint in a pale green carpeted room. Ummm...well....I managed to lose my balance and knock the full gallon upside down onto the rug and fall off of the chair too. I was home alone. Called DH when I picked my paint covered sobbing self up. He and his best friend left work and stopped and rented a carpet cleaning machine at the grocery store. It took about 50 tanks of water to dilute and suck up the paint. They did such a great job you never could tell that it happened.

And no I donot paint inside the house ...ever. Not allowed. c

The bucket of paint was on top of the ladder. My Mother was at the bottom. The bucket tipped over and landed on her head.
She had green hair, down to the roots.
Floor is one thing, but imagine on your head!

Great stories! Glad to know I'm not the only one. DS wanted to "help" paint when he was six, so I put him on the patio with the removable mullions from his bedroom window. Unfortunately he decided to carry the paint inside when he was done, and spilled the whole quart on the (white) carpeted stairs. DS came to me with lip trembling and said "Mommy, you're gonna be really mad".

I ran for the kitchen and came back with an assortment of spoons and spatulas. DH laughed and called me "MacGyver". He dashed to the grocery store and rented a carpet cleaner. I poured cup after cup of water and he sucked up paint for two hours. It all came out.

I'm afraid I did yell at DS. He's away at college now, and I wish I had that sweet six year old back to hug right now.

I am a member if the club as well. Last year before I moved in with my boyfriend I figured I would paint and prime the awful paneling in his family room and sure enough the whole gallon of paint dumped on the carpet. I wasn't a big fan of the light blue carpet anyway. It was unintentional but got new carpet out of the whole situation :)

What a nightmare of a club to have to join! "Please God, I'll join most any other club. Just don't make me join this one..."

Flyleft, try a rug stain remover. I used OrangeGlo on a rug and got the paint out but I'm not sure it's good advice. What if your rug turns orange? Mine was a dark color.

I'm such a klutz the I spread plastic - no matter how little paint is to be used. My last painting mishap was flipping the paint tray off the ladder. It grew wings and landed at the distant edge of the plastic. There was some paint on the carpet, but I got it out with lots of water.

Of course, I don't think anything will be as bad duckwalking backwards to admire the baseboard I had just painted, losing my balance and sitting my bare bottom into a paint tray of white enamel. (I only wear a t-shirt when I paint inside the home.) There are some places that really don't like being cleaned with turpentine.

This is why prepping is sooooo important. If you don't want to get paint on it, cover it up!

Want to hear my worst time (out of many)? I was in the middle of a decorating job, transforming a school's staff lounge from the ugly, dingy, dark, uncomfortable room it was into something MUCH nicer. The Albuquerque Journal newspaper sent a reporter/photographer to take pics and interview me for a feature story about the reno. He showed up while the room was being painted and I ~ gracefully and with such professionalism and dignity (NOT!) ~ stepped backwards into a tray full of paint knocking it all over everything and ruining my shoe. I finished the interview in my bare feet, feeling like a total idiot. Thankfully, he didn't use *that* pic and the lounge was a huge success with the staff. To this day, my DH is petrified to have me in the same room with an open can of paint.

Why didn't anyone put down that large plastic stuff? When I paint I cover the entire floor with it and any furniture that I don't move out of the room.

Me in the paint? One bare foot square in a paint tray once, and a lot of hopping. But more amusingly, while we were having our house painted inside and out, and there were painters swarming all over the place, one of our kitties decided to come in through the open (wet) window and track white paint all over the freshly refinished hall floor. The painters were darling...one snatched up the kitty, one took paint thinner to the floor, and the a third got a damp paper towel and cleaned up the very surprised kitty's paws while the first held the back half of him inside the bib of his overalls. They were very gentle. It was quite the moment. The kitty spent the rest of the day under the bed.
The paint on mother's head and the pregnant paint dousing are wonderful stories!

I was painting a half bath and in the commotion of almost falling off the step ladder I knocked off the new open gallon of paint.
Slow motion time begins then....paint can tips to the right, splashes paint, I swat it back up to the left, oops too much.
Over-corrected and the paint makes a graceful arch and lands in the toilet- open end first.

Just a friendly reminder to all bathroom painters- SHUT THE LID!

blackthumb, you are hereby renamed wetblanket :) (I usually put plastic down if I'm painting a lot [which saved us when DH backed into a roller tray full of paint once], but I was just doing a little finishing touchup today, so I scooted some newspapers under the door area to catch any drips.)

natesgramma, I also definitely have a pair of pants I use when painting -- they have a significantly higher proportion of Brandon Beige on them now...

And the slow-motion time you talk about groomingal in your highly dramatic rendering of the new-member-hazing -- I SO remember it from today -- we both have great reflexes because I almost (*almost*) caught mine again after my hand just froze and dropped it. Unfortunately the catch turned into a flip to keep a *little* of the paint in the can, but in the process of flipping it, I sprayed it out in an arc even further (onto the wood furniture).

trailrunner, I just want to reach back in time and come help you; I can just imagine a pregnant mama collapsing in tears over what happened...

And bronwynsmom, as soon as the paint spilled, one of our cats came trotting over to see what the commotion was. I said "Get away" in a somewhat urgent voice and she left, thank *goodness* or we would have had little beige artifacts all over the carpet in the other room...

How could I forget! I was telling my mother about the woes of this thread and she busted out laughing and reminded me of the most horrid paint experience I ever had- lord how could I have forgotten.

It was early summer, I was about 13 and my parents rented a commercial sprayer to paint the exterior of the house. I was put on window taping duty. I hurried as fast as I could so I could use the power sprayer- just had to get my hands on it. I finished and so eagerly ran to use the sprayer.
Quick instructions from dad, don't point it at anything but the house, spray evenly, and keep an eye on the paint level. Dad hands the sprayer over and says here you go, just squeeze the trigger. Easy enough!
I take my painting stance, point the sprayer, pull the trigger and the hissing of paint is followed by the wailing of a 13yr old girl that just sprayed herself in the face with a paint sprayer.
My bangs were standing straight up, eyes squeezed shut, blowing through my nose, and drooling white paint and managing to scream "I'm Blind, I'm Blind". Mom tries to spray me down with the hose as I run around like a hysterical Casper. My Dad laughed about how this possibly topped all of the crazy things I have done and wishes he had his video camera.
I haven't touched a paint sprayer since then *shudders*

YIKES, groomingal! They say that comedy is tragedy you survive...

I was painting the dining room, had the furniture piled in the middle of the room and covered with plastic. Put the paint tray on the floor, was rollering away on the walls. Went to dip in the tray again, saw the dog, a black 100# long-haired mutt with an enormous fluffy tail, sitting with her entire tail in the tray of buttercup yellow paint!

As soon as I turned around to re-dip, O'Reilly stood and wagged her tail furiously! Paint flew all over the place, and I mean FLEW ALL OVER THE PLACE, including the woodwork I hadn't taped and the French Doors.

It's amazing how much paint a dog's tail holds! I didn't know which to clean up first, so I opted for the DR and sent the dog outside. By the time I finished cleaning up the DR, O'Reilly's tail was pretty crusty. She looked ridiculous for a week, and so did the patch of grass she plopped down on!

I hate to laugh at other people's misery, but I couldn't hold it in. I've already been inducted into the club too. In our case, we had just bought a quart of VERY DARK blue for an accent wall. We weren't ready to paint yet, so the quart was still in the Lowe's bag in the kitchen. Our then-2-year-old wanted to be helpful and decided to bring the paint to Mommy. You guessed it ... he dropped the quart on the tile floor, the BRAND NEW tile floor, the brand new tile floor that DH painstakingly laid on the diagonal for me. The lid popped off and paint went everywhere! Did I mention that the paint was DARK blue? We got it all off, after a lot of water and a lot of scrubbing. (And DS got a lot of kisses later b/c it scared him so much.)
