Losing sleep over roses
Comments (18)I just had a soil analysis for my main bed. It found 4.6% oranic matter. Not bad but of course could be better. But everything else seems to be OK. For a time I thought the problem was drainage but yesterday I dug a hole filled it with water and waited for it to drain. I thought this could be awhile but lo and behold it drained in less than three hours. Now as to organic matter. This spring I applied alfalfa meal and cow manure, then I mulched with newspapers and grass clippings that are worn out now with a lot of paper showing. Somewhere along in summer I put some Rosetone. I've meant to put some horse manure but didn't get around to it. I've been wondering how that works on top of my "mulch", I suppose just put in on there. Pictures? Despite being somewhat computer literate a few years ago I still don't know how to do that. Besides most of my rose gardens are a mess. I've been thinking seriously about giving up on roses. Either that or to drastically cut back on the numbers as I can't take care of the ones I have. That may be the best solution what with being 80 years old now. But I have so much invested in trying to grow roses! I have tons of books and I spend hours poring over them. The DK book by the Quest-Risons I have nearly memorized. And then there is all that work, planting, pruning,etc. So meanwhile back at the ranch one has black spot, Japanese beetles, winter kill, poor choices, the wrong rose and all those infernal weeds that manage to tolerate much better the conditions that the roses find not to there liking. Now and then there is a rose that inspires. Lately that has been Baltimore Belle. Hardy, fragrant, vigorous and profuse blooming in Spring. It grows with what I have to give it. Currently has many new 10' canes. Just like that. No intense inspection to see if you can determine what ails a failing rose. Comments (11)The house faces North - so the back (where the room will be) gets a lot of morning light but is shaded in the afternoon - sun hits the front of the house in the afternoon. DH thinks that having 5 tall windows side by side (with 6inches of drywall in between) might look to busy. I think he's thinking of wanting to do a series of wider windows. THe reason that the builder did this though was to match the 2 windows that are in the exisiting family room. The contractor already got the structural plans for the 5 windows (have to put steel poles in between each window). Comments (19)Pretty room and nice windows. Here's the thing........if you get the right shade of paint to suit your room and your taste, it won't be too much. That wall will always be too much in your room if you don't work with it to add interest. The paint will go a long way towards making it prettier. Then, you might play with furniture or art or a large mirror or something to fill it and lead into the kitchen. Your paint choices sound good. Do you have a favorite? Have you bought a sample quart? If you have, go ahead and roll it onto the wall. I would probably start where the long wall hits kitchen and paint a swath at least 6' high and 6' wide heading back into LR. That way, I could stand at the windows and visualize my color going on into the kitchen. Or........I might do the opposite. Take my sample quart (SW only charges $5 each so it's a deal!! But keep in mind that it won't have all the depth of color as the real paint!) and paint the area between the fireplace brick and the window trim. Any of your sages or blue greens will look good with both your flooring and your trim. It's just a matter of deciding how deep you want to go. I also love Benjamin Moore's Dry sage. It has a moody look that segues from muted green to almost a gray-blue at times, depending on lighting. Also very very pretty with wood. Stop worrying about that long wall! Comments (6)I am soooo glad to see your post! Lol. My family doesn't understand and now I know I am not alone. We remodeled our kitchen 3 years ago and it wasn't near as bad as this. We did end up tearing out our old whirlpool tub. There was nothing wrong with it and I wanted to keep it. Hubby strongly advised to replace it because the plumbing was 20 years old - it was plastic - plastic wears outs, and if it leaks it's going into my new kitchen. Lol. He won. But, like you said, the old tub deck had to be cut down so in the end my bathroom ended up gutted to the studs. All I really wanted was another drawer in my puny vanity, and somehow it ballooned to a gut job. Breath in, breath out....See MoreKarenseb

4 years agoI wanted a natural look for my white oak floors so went with the Pallman Clear for sealer and the Pallman Power in Satin as the finisher. I love how my floors turned out. The satin does have a slight sheen to it but I was afraid to go with the matte as we often go barefoot and I've read that often leaves footprints on matte floors (have also read that matte floors quickly go dull). It was the first time my finisher had used Pallman and he was very impressed with the product. He's planning on continuing to use the product.
