tricky window....need help with WT (pic included)

I am finally finished with our kitchen remodel....now working on window treatments. My problem is the window over the sink. I really wanted some kind of roman shade to bring in color and softness to the kitchen. The adjacent breakfast area will have bamboo shades and one window with coordinating panels.

Can I put a roman shade on this window with no overhead support to attach the roman shade to? Would it sag or just not enough support for the shade?

The crescent window above will have no WT and the shade would start at the top of the square window

Would it have to be an inside mount as I only have 1.5 inches for outside mount?(the cabinets are very close to the edge of window).

Dimensions and pic below...

41" h x 47.25"w x 2.75"d (crescent not measured)

If roman shades are not an option what else can I do with this window?

Thank you for the pictures. That helps. You are not all that bad off but I can understand your concern. It looks like your turf is a mix of grasses and some of them have been affected by something (disease or insects). That's why you get a mix of grasses for times like this. Do you know what mix of grasses you have? Put out some cat food or tuna cans in various places in the yard. Turn on the sprinklers and time how long it takes to fill the slowest can. Then use that as a starting point for your watering. Does your soil dry out completely between your two waterings? I'm thinking with those temps it does not. The issue with watering too frequently is that any weed seeds in the lawn will get enough water for a long enough period to germinate. The way you water less frequently is to water long enough to get 1 inch all at one time with no runoff. Are you mowing at the mower's highest setting? It looks like you are mowing at 2 inches or less. For almost all cool season grasses you will get a better looking color when you mow it high. There are several reasons for this that I won't get into. If you want to fertilize this summer, you can use organic fertilizer with no fear of burning even if the temps get up there. Organic fertilizers range in price from FREE (Starbucks gives away bags of used coffee grounds), inexpensive (any feed store will sell ground up stuff (corn, soy, wheat, alfalfa or something), or expensive (commercially bagged organic fertilizer). They all get applied at a rate of 10-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. If you make a mistake and apply at 40-60, or even 100 pounds per 1,000, it won't hurt the grass but it might smell a little sour as the protein decomposes. I would stay away from synthetic fertilizer until Labor Day. Water and mulch-mow weekly. If you want to fertilize during the summmer, use organics as much as you want.

thanks for the responses! ratherbesewing, i like the idea of roman shades, although the word "custom" makes me nervous--that sounds expensive!! would you leave the little windows with nothing over the shades? would that look funny/unbalanced if there are panels on the big window and door? sujafr, i wish i could see a photo of your DD's room with the shutters! i wonder if they'd be room darkening enough? also i wonder how they attach? there is no room to mount them inside. kristinekr, thank you for the bathroom compliments! we LOVE how it turned out! now we have the bug to do the rest of the house. :) I didn't think of the grommets without sheers, because I need *something* behind the curtains when i pull them aside so i don't see the neighbors house (or they don't see me). what would you suggest if not sheers? do you think it would look ok to have panels on the one window and not the others? i don't think i can do an inside mount because there's only 3/4-inch of space for the hardware. i'll have to look into it. Jenelle- It looks like you have more home, to the bottom of the page...the living room? Are there more bedrooms in this area, too? It would help to see your whole space, at least for me :) Right now, I'm tempted to take out some of these walls and open the kitchen to the dining room. It looks like you have the perfect place for a big island (which could also include a few supports if necessary, for the ceiling beam) but would really open up your space. If you're thinking about a mostly "topless" kitchen (LOL) then putting the fridge and maybe a separate oven, against the outside wall makes sense. In the middle you could keep the sink (or put the cooktop there) and have the other on the big island. Do you want to keep the windows (over the sink and the nook) or can you start over, with new placement? That makes a difference, too. If you took out that wall between the kitchen and dining area, and replaced it with a big island, you could also lose a little of the pantry and move your bedroom door down a bit, either even with the island, or the walkway between the island and the perimeter counter. This would keep people from seeing in, from the front door. If window placement is not an option, I would put the fridge, the cooktop and maybe an extra oven or pantry on the outside wall, with the sink/dishwasher on the island. You could put windows on either side of the cooktop, to give you more light and maybe a skylight? That would help those dreary Oregon days :)

Nice! I would use an oil-based stain because they have longer working times. (living in an extremely dry climate, I find water-based anything is hard to work with) I would go distinctly lighter or darker, but stay in the same color range - where a not-quite match looks like you didn't pull it off, a clearly different color says "this is a contrasting inlay". Mask off the edges of the shape. Wipe down the surface with mineral spirits. Apply the stain with a rag that's been , first wiping in circles, then finishing wiping with the grain as best you can. Apply a top coat - I'd use one of the clear wipe-on finishes.

It appears to me that you would have enough room on each side of the window to mount the shade. You could mount L brackets in the available space, attach a board to the bracket and attach the Roman shade to the board. A valence on the shade would hide the L brackets.

Sorry, I am going to be no help here - LOL. Why would you want to block off that wonderful window and view over the sink with a roman shade?

The only thing I might be tempted to do would be to mount a glass shelf across the window space between the cabinets, right at the trim level between the arched and lower window, and use that as a place to display either some plants or a collection of pretty colored glass containers.

Suero- yes that's a great idea with the L brackets. I went to JCP today to get ideas and the sales person did not give me any good options. Just that I could do inside mount (side mount only)...but not giving me a good answer if it would be stable or not. It sounds like I can make this work with the suggestion you mentioned. Thanks.

les917- I have been considering leaving the window bare...that particular window doesn't really have any privacy issues. Yes I love the light and view also, and know that a shade would block some of it. I guess I feel the kitchen doesn't look complete without a WT there. I'm still deciding. Good Ideas.

If privacy is not an issue, I would vote to do nothing! I have a similar window over my sink, and I don't want to minimize the view or the light, so I chose to let it be!

I like it without a wt also. So, I vote no wt. I have a similar window and left mine bare- just put wt's on the french door and double window in the kitchen.

I agree with all the no wt comments. Pretty window, the sill will be a great display shelf, maybe find some items that will bring the colors you desire. And a window charm. That view is awful pretty view, too!
