Backsplash Help, please! Pic Heavy & Cross posted
Comments (28)Love the color of the Gigi Stix, but I think they're too small. I really like the lighter 1x2. You get a bit of modern glitz, but it's still a natural, organic feeling tile. Is that by chance Lunada Bay Sumi-E? I did a whole wall of that in my kitchen and am really happy with it! If it is Sumi-E, then they have a matte version if you don't like the shine, but personally I like it. Very pretty when the light hits it "just so."...See MoreGrout color for carrara marble backsplash - Platinum is too dark!
Comments (6)I think the platinum takes the fun out of your particular tile design. I'd go lighter like the white ( or other nice light color for your marble ). Or I'd go darker than the platinum. Was you sample totally dry when you took that picture? It took my samples over a day to really dry down for a realistic reading. Do some more samples. My carrara is more of a tannish color. I used Natural which was sort of concrete color. It had an ever so slight green to it. Other grays were pinkish and did not look good with my tile. My different trials in the picture were Natural & white, total Natural, & last, Natural cut with a little white. I ended up blending Natural with a bit of white in a 3:1 ratio for my final material. I wanted some contrast....See MoreGrout color and/or sealant for matte Heath tile backsplash?
Comments (18)If you search under sealing crackle tile, which apparently does need to be sealed, at least after install and before grouting, you might find some product help. I'd also test any sealer before sealing, if Heath doesn't have a product rec for their glaze. ETA. As explained to me, by my DD, a ceramics student, glaze, whether matte or gloss, becomes a type of glass, when fired, that covers the clay body. Crackle tile is a glaze type that deliberately mimics "failed" glaze, glaze that has crazed and will allow staining of the clay body. That's why a sealer is placed over it, a double glaze, if you will, that shouldn't be required for a properly glazed tile. I think, with my handmade tile, it's handmade, and they can't guarantee some unexpected glaze failure on a given backsplash tile. So, their response when asked about sealing was, "ok, if you want" but they didn't recommend it, as you are saying Heath does. I'll try not to spit barbecue sauce onto my backsplash. ☺...See MoreMarble backsplash yellowing right after grouting
Comments (76)Sorry I missed the comment qttire1. I ended up tearing the whole backsplash down and then redoing it with distilled water (no admixture). Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it didn't get any better over time, if anything some areas became worse. Once I redid it, I had a few spots that were getting stained (similar yellowing, but only in small areas). I used a grout cleaner (acid free) and a stiff brush, just lathered it on the brush, gently dabbed it on the area, let it sit for a few minutes, then gently scrub. On a few places the grout was a little thin so it poked through, just repaired that and it was good as new. As for dealing with the Tile Shop, I eventually got them to give me all new material, but they would not budge on either a refund or compensating me for my time/a pro to come do it (the 2nd time). Won't be shopping there again.
