SW Duration Home Matte

Has anyone used this paint? Me and my Dad who is a retired painter used this paint in a small bath that previously had wallpaper. The wall was skimmed and primed. The paint did not go on well and also did not cut in well either. He said he had never seen a paint so hard to apply. The SW dealer recommended the matte paint. I do like more of a flat finish, but believe a stain finish would have been better for the bathroom. My Dad has always loved SW paints, but had never used this one. Are all washable paints this way?

No, washable paints are not all like that...most are easy to apply. The only thing I don't like about Duration Home is the gritty feel the paint film has after it is dry.

paintguy, what do you think is the best paint for bathrooms with as little sheen as possible?

I prefer the pro classic to the duration. Both are nice paint, but for some odd reason I can't explain I just prefer the pro classic to the basic stuff. I started using it for trim and it does beat the heck out of duration for that, and I guess I just never went back. I don't have a fan deck with me right now so I can't answer the color question about gold 2 but I will say that being a HUGE gold lover that I like a gold wall with a slightly tan ceiling. I actually used ralph lauren's parchment and writers parchment (lighter) with my gold's in our town house and both look fabulous. You might consider seeing how that looks and then have SW do a paint match if you like the combo.

They are plaster walls. The primer was SW Harmony. It dried overnite, and yes, it's a cold climate, MN, about 4 degrees and we lowered the heat in there to about 62 degrees. The primer went on ok----a little unevenly to my surprise, but we evened it out with more rolling than I would have anticipated. It should have been my first clue, but usually I don't prime previously painted and washed walls. I wanted to do an especially nice job. ha. I'm certain now that it is the primer. We used a different manufacturer's paint on the windows, but the SW primer and had the same problem. I tried wiping the primer with a damp rag and it partially came off with no effort to my surprise. Not wanting to wash a gallon of primer off the walls, I quit that and we tried rolling the Duration matte which went better than the brushing on. Still.....there is no going back to even it out, or the same flaking problem. I'm hoping if we can get even a crummy 1st coat on, we'll do better with the second coat. Our test run looks good for the second coat. Still...the primer seems defective. I've never had this kind of problem before. Too bad we put primer on everything, wanting to do a quality job. And here we are, worse off than if we just slapped it on over dirty walls. (We did wash the walls before priming. I'm just giving an example.) Any thoughts? I'm so over this I could cry.

We've used SW Duration Matte in two houses now. I love this paint. Looks great (I use the Pro Classic in semi-gloss for trim) and wears very well. Doesn't burnish if you need to scrub at it. I even use it in kitchens and bathrooms, and there are no "water marks" on walls like you sometime see in a steamy bathroom. My favorite part, though, is that touch-ups are practically invisible. I can spackle, then dab on a little paint with a foam brush and you can't tell. It's great!

SW Duration or BM Aura exterior paint for a deep red?

Do you trust the BM color matching? What if I mixed a few sample paints to come up with a custom color? Would you trust the BM color scanner to match it? I ask because I have been testing color samples on my house and can't find the right color. One is close but just a tad too orangey on the front of the house that gets all day sun.

BM's Aura Matte. I also hear that BM's Aura Bath and Spa is better for bathrooms, but I haven't used it yet, though I assume it is just an upgraded version of regular Aura.

I've used it on two rooms, and am very happy with the process and results. I used to use SW SuperPaint but have become a Duration fan because the coverage was much better.

You do have to avoid going over the same spot when it is somewhat but not quite dry or it will lift. I had already read about that so was expecting it. I only did it once before I got the knack of "hit it and move on".

I didn't have any trouble (more than usual) cutting in. What made it different than any other paint in that regard?

I have two issues with Duration Home Matte-
First off-it seems to require constant stirring to keep it together. I couldn't fill a tray with it.
Second-it's NOT a matte finish. It looks like eggshell to me. Too much sheen to be called a matte. It's a pretty nice looking finish but not what I banked on.
I can't say I won't ever use it again but I won't choose it again. It's not cheap (though not as pricey as BM Aura) and it performed about the same as Valspar/Lowes American Tradition Eggshell which is much less expensive.

I use more Regal matte and Aura as opposed to Duration. I like the duration matte more in lighter bases rather than darker colors. I would really recommend using aura products for deeper bases. I do seem to notice more of a shine coming from the darker hues of duration and yes I also think the sheen level is just a tad more than what I would call a matte. It is a little thinner viscosity than I like , so it is like I need to be a little more careful from bucket to wall. For the price difference if you are a SW user I would recommend for you to try the super paint - just not the flat in a bathroom . Not for sure what type of problems you encountered but in bath rooms I'm always mumbling under my breath since a lot of bath rooms I work in are not a 20x20 size room and heat or air volume and lights are issues to contend with as well.
