easy way to roast chiles for skinning
Comments (9)Pam: "Luckily the poblanos are fine. I might try frying them, someone... was it DMF??? said that frying in oil makes the skin soft so you don't have to worry about skinning.... " It was me. That frying thing, I only do for smaller peppers like Jals, serranos and habs. And it's not actually frying, It's more like a saute, like you would with onions or other veggies. But with peppers, I only do it if I'm going to be pureeing them. What I found out with larger ones, like Anaheims, is that If I oven roast them when coated with oil and I don't let them get black, they PUREE up fine also -- That tough skin doesn't need to be removed. That's only if I'm pureeing. If you want to keep them whole, or chop up softened ones for things like New Mexico green chile, you're going to have to fire roast or grill (you know, the traditional ways). When I have a bunch like you do and I want them whole, I either broil in the oven or throw on the gas grill until black. Throw in a bowl with plastic wrap for 20-30 mins and then get to skinning. If you don't want to invest in a roaster like Peppermeister and Ottawa, you're next best bet would be one of those flamethrower gadgets that you attach to a propane tank. You know, those things they use out on farms to kill weeds. Kevin...See MoreAny ideas for easy ways to provide vertical supports for vines?
Comments (41)I haven't been on the forums for a while so am a bit out of touch. I've been busy in the garden, but it is already 90F at 9am so am taking it in small doses today. I got carried away with purchasing and trading morning glory seeds this past winter and ended up like many of you with not enough fence lines to grow them on. I raise sheep and if they can get to a plant it is history! I made some trellises this year with refrigeration tubing rolled into a shape like a spring (about 6" in diameter) then inserted one end of the spring in the ground or pot and the other end in a section of copper pipe stood on end in the soil with the plants around it. The plants seem happy enough with this arrangement but it is actually a little short for most morning glories and they are overreaching the tops now looking for additional support from neighboring plants. Another idea that I tried this year is actually working better--I had a section of loose chain link fence that I could get anyone to take away for me so I used a bolt cutter to cut off the part where the wires are twisted together at the top and bottom freeing the wire to be twisted out of the fence fabric. They are perhaps 6-7' long. I tried various configurations in pots and ground using 3, 5, or 6 wires. I twisted the wire into the soil and wired the tops together making some teepee type trellises. The plants LOVE this wire and have almost no problem climbing the trellises. In some pots (smaller type vines), I pushed both ends of the wires into the soil and it makes a nice fat balloon shape that are very nice when covered with vines. My visitors have all been very interested and complimentary of these trellises/support systems You just can't get any cheaper than the salvaged fence trellises. I would bet that you could find pieces of this kind of fence at the local landfill or recycling center. Good luck, spiderwoman...See MoreMelted plastic(bag) on cookware! Easy removal Please
Comments (16)There is a product that my sister uses to remove wax, that you can get from a beauty supply place. She is an aesthetician and recommended it when I made a really dumb move - blowing out a candle with a huge pool of melted was. OK, so you know where the melted wax ended up - ON EVERYTING! I have a painted, white dining room table and that stuff really helped. It didn't ruin the finish either. Also, when my sister moved, her wax machine, full of melted wax, spilled onto everything - walls, floors, papers, furniture; you get the idea. She was able to use that stuff to remove the wax without any problems from everything but the papers. Let me go find the bottle to check the name - OK, it's Sure Clean by GiGi. I've used it for "melted plastic", and it worked for me. Also, I just called my very smart ex-husband to see what he thought. We had tree sap all over my car and he used alcohol to remove it. It didn't ruin the clearcoat finish. He said to tell you to use a hair dryer to warm up the plastic and then use rubbing alcohol to remove it. He said anything like that should work - just don't use any acid based product. I asked the dumb question on whether the alcohol would ruin the finish on your pan. The response - No, that's why they call it stainless steel!! Is he that smart, or me that dumb - OMG!! Anyway, hope you get results from at least one of all of our great suggestions. I've done the same thing many times with the plastic bags that bread comes in. LOL. gng Good luck - hope it helps....See Moreanother way to remove scale?
Comments (17)maryland...By taking the valve off- you are talking about the top valve where the intake of water is? One problem that I had from not being able to care for it was draining it- I thought (must never think again), that when the tank had quit draining that it was empty...wrong, very, very wrong :( The tank had quit draining because the valve at the bottom was plugged with scale. I was doing other things outside for about 1 hour, so I thought for SURE it was drained.. When I took the top element out to see which one was burned out- GUSHER!!! The tank wasn't even 1/4th empty, so when I took out the top element the water gushed out- with the force of water above it gushed out about 3-4 foot from the tank- water all over the laundry room!! Then, I had to take out the lower element- same thing!! That's when I realized the lower valve was clogged (some people are slow learners!). Because of this, I am not sure what to do- I know the lower valve will be clogged, but how else do I get the water out? I don't want to repeat the gushing water episode! As for the marathon- yes- my mom had one- they will stay lukewarm for almost a week after turned off! I don't have the room, though- the laundryroom is small- the WH is in the corner by the door- a Marathon would block part of the doorway. Good idea, though- especially with the need to use less energy in today's world. Is there a way to drain it without repeating the 'gusher'?...See Moregraywings123
