Pantry overkill

In our new L shaped kitchen, we will have 20 feet of counter top, as well as upper (to the ceiling) and lower cabinets, with an island, and a 30" panty. 80% of the panty will be for food storage.

Do two people who don't cook gourmet meals need that much storage? I wanted to cut the pantry back to a 24" but I was discouraged. I'm non confrontational, so I gave. Now I feel like arguing. Do you think that this is just a kitchen makeover stage I'm going through?

How big is your storage pantry for your family of how many people? Is there a formula? Besides, I live two miles from the grocery store.

You can always keep other stuff in there. But if you'd rather have 6" more counter, absolutely get it. I've never HAD a pantry--always used uppers and lowers.

Where will you store your small appliances?

If you cook a lot of prepared foods (canned, boxed, etc.) then you probably need more food storage than someone who cooks from scratch. Now spices OTOH, like me you probably don't need a lot of spice storage, just the basics...I'm not a gourmet cook either!

What a story. Hopefully the house you're working on now will have a happy ending. We remodeled a somewhat contemporary home built in the late 1950's and are very happy with our choices. Dishwasher - kept 5 year old Kitchenaid from our old kitchen. It is stainless so fits in with the new appliances. Still works fine. We're happy with it and glad we didn't spend money on an upgrade. Refrigerator - Subzero 742. Got a floor model from our builder at a very good price. The main reason we were considering Subzero was that the coils are on top and are easy to clean. We have shelties and in the old kitchen I was always pulling out the refrigerator to clean the coils. Now they're in an area where they don't collect all dog hair and all I've got to do is climb up on a stepladder to clean them. Would make the same choice again. Oven - Wolf single oven 30 inch. We were leaning toward a lesser brand double oven. Once we bought the Subzero, we felt that given our local market and the Subzero we should go with the Wolf. Installed the oven at counter height with pull out drawers for baking pans below and tray storage above. My mom who lives with us has back problems and doesn't bend easily. We all love the Wolf oven and it gets a lot of use. I didn't think we'd use all the bells and whistles but we do. We're happy with just the single oven. It gets a ton of use and lots of the time it's for a large crowd. We have never once wondered if we made the wrong choice but DH insists if we'd chosen something else, we'd wonder what the Wolf would have been like. After touring a few kitchens with warming drawers that were mostly being used for towel storage, we decided we didn't need one. Have a small portable microwave/convection/broiler/toaster oven in a cabinet that meets our needs. Thermador Induction Cooktop. We are very pleased with it and it does what we expect it to do. Wolf was not available at the time we purchased and other brands we considered were not available locally. Sure we could have imported or had shipped from further away but we felt Thermador would meet our needs and it does.

benjesbride, raebutt (what a name?! lol) - sorry; I'm a bad contributor here -- I used to lurk way too much some while ago but am completely out of the habit now .... My experience - it was actually a really long time ago now and I don't remember well. What I bought though was not "hermetically sealed" - I'm not sure, to tell you the truth, what that means practically speaking. What I bought at first was a whole large bunch of small to huge (and expensive) glass jars with those wire snaps and a gasket about the glass lid. I thought those would keep the air out but it's not so. Or at least those moths got around. As others have noted, they can and seem to "worm" their way in and around jar top threads even. They are so gross I hate thinking about this.... I honestly don't remember what happened long ago. I remember giving up on buying those jars because it wasn't helping. I think I had OK luck with just taking juice jars and screwing them mind-bogglingly tight. But it wasn't reliable and it sure wasn't fun to open those things. That's when I had The Conversation. They recommended Cambro food service containers. I was skeptical because they don't pretend to be air-tight. Again, it's seemingly worked for me though I'm sure the instant I type this we'll be invaded. You can buy these containers large enough to hold a 25lb bag of flour, which I do. I hesitate to confess this here because - speaking of gross - I'm sure many of you will be hugely disapproving of many aspects of the following story. But here goes: we left the country for a year and I left a bunch - maybe a half dozen - of these containers with grains and food stuffs in them, with those trusty bay leaves: not a speck. Again, I swear I can hear those little wings get fired up by the challenge to hear this! lol So that's my experience. As mentioned I did have that infestation recently in rice that was not protected. At the advice of a friend I tossed that stuff in the freezer in a bag, shook it and sieved it (talk about gross) and then since rice gets washed before using anyway, I ate the stuff up. Protein's protein, right?

When you build with the WOW and 4k square feet, (which sounds like a lot but is not ) . It is NOT when you give starring role /NEARLY five hundred sq ft of it to a great room in front of the entry. Another couple hundred to a "hearth" area ......and what will happen here is nobody will actually gather in the great room, the fire will be the traffic stopper. Then you give each of three bedrooms a "walk in " closet. etc Result? you are left with the master suite that seems ( is) out of scale to the wow in the middle. Also small scale kid/guest bedrooms. The only answer to this plan is to lose a chunk of the "covered porch" square off the kitchen corner, bump the master suite to flush with the kitchen exterior wall.Change the window, to two on the covered porch wall and center the bed between. Plan to lose the tub for a decent shower too. Adjust bath and closet , center the entry to those with a right and left side for each. Anything else requires a total overhaul of the plan. That would mean a second story with two beds and baths on a second floor. ..........a completely different house. But this much under roof on one floor, with allocation to functions as is ? Yup......this is what you get Bump the master suite....or build something else.. ( square off that breakfast nook in any scenario.)

Below is an illustration of an exercise I sometimes go through on a project to point out the efficiency of the layout, how much of the house is dedicated to circulation space and how much room there is for furniture. Circulation space is unavoidable but the less there is the more efficient the layout is.This just addresses efficiency. Other design flaws I see are how insect screens are handled at the double doors in the dining and guest bedroom? Why are there doors there and not windows? Where will a guest entering from the front have their coat hung? If the door from the guest bath to the family room survives, where will the light switch go? Why such a big work triangle in the kitchen? Work triangles work best when they are a triangle. And the list is longer but I have to get back to work.

I would be inclined to keep the larger pantry. I like the appearance and practicality of uncluttered counter space and I see it as a real plus to have storage for things you want ready at hand, but not on the counters.

Even if you don't do a lot of from scratch cooking, you can keep serving bowls and baskets for entertaining in there. Canisters, small appliances, kitchen linens, cookbooks, paper towels, foils & wraps, Tupperware...It's hard to think you can ever have too much kitchen storage space.

But if the extra counter space is important to you, now's the time to stand your ground.

It's hard to say without knowing where your counterspace is and how it's divided, but I sure wouldn't ever think of 30" of pantry as overkill. Even non-gourmets need a place to keep small appliances, extra ingredients, rolls of papertowels...? Beyond adequate workspace in the necessary areas, I think excess counter is more overrated, but I could always use more pantry space...It can be so flexible if not divided up too much or filled with specialty hardware...Besides the things already mentioned, pantries can hold dishes, extra pots and pans, large or awkward items... But that's my opinion. I like a pantry that's open shelves in order to meet my needs as they arise, and I think 24" could fill quickly.

I agree with everyone else. Keep the pantry at the 30" size for the reasons already mentioned. Also, put an outlet in there for the small appliances. Even if you have no plans to plug anything in right now, you may in the future, and if you're re-doing your kitchen, I assume the electrician is there, so may as well add the pantry outlet to his list. I actually keep my MW in my pantry. I don't particularly like the looks of a MW in my kitchen, and I am not a frequent MW user, so keeping it on a shelf in the pantry was an ideal solution for me.

Okay, I'm keeping the pantry. I'm using an oversized country cupboard at the moment, and I guess if I measured it, it would be about the same size.

I'm just getting ready to start a kitchen remodel and we have a pantry that is 24" now and I'm increasing it to 30" in the new kitchen. Just the two of us and we are retired but we manage to keep the pantry pretty full as it is. In the future, if you sell, I think the new buyers would like it.

Good decision on keeping the 30", I'll bet down the road you'll relish 'the little bit extra' it provides.

I got a giggle from a few of your comments..not being a "gourmet", "living close to the store" and "only being two" of you. I don't know why it struck me funny.

My many chef, cook & "gourmet" friends, all operate on a pretty streamlined kitchen, items do double (..triple,quadruple)duty. They don't have a gadget to seed a Cucumber- instead they use the tip of a spoon!
I'm single and live down the street from the grocery..I want to spend as little time there as possible.. It makes my head hurt- the parking lot, kids screaming and begging for every item they can, its congested and poorly laid out...I would much rather go to my spacious pantry and pull out exactly what I need. For fresh produce- I will gladly go "producing" as often as needed.

Also, It may just be the two of you- but you're putting great thought (and I'm sure $) into a kitchen redo- that's why you're here! People don't overhaul kitchens on a whim- In the back of your mind, ask Is it possible someone else would appreciate having that for their needs and lifestyle? Sometimes the little things make a big difference.

I think you'll love your new pantry!

I am glad you are keeping the pantry. If you ever sell, I am sure a larger pantry will be very attractive to would-be home buyers as well.
