Ok here I go again...I see a scale problem in this pretty room. The picture is too large...way too large. And the bedside table and the antique chest on chest are competing, and neither is winning.

I'd leave the bed as is. It's very comfy looking and pretty. The style goes well with the antique chest on chest, so I'd leave those two pieces in the room.

I love the two antique outfits, but would like to see them hung together instead of separating them, OR (this just came to me). How about putting the bed on a diagonal, and adding two small end tables (room for a lamp and a book...round works best in a diagonal setting) and hanging one of each of the pieces at table height (it becomes part of the bedside table decor). You could do the skirted tables using a basic set of legs from Homedespot and a wood round, then cover with your new expertise :oP This would be a nice way to get the proper fit.

I'm not convinced the trunk belongs in the room. It's very rustic and the bed is not. The chest on chest is very refined, and again does not really work with the trunk as is, but if there's room when you move the bed, how about throwing a pretty lace piece over the trunk top and seeing how that looks?

I like the window coverings frankly, but if you want to play, how about something simple draped to the floor (no puddles please). I'd pull out the reds you're shooting for with the spread personally.

I would also slide the pictures over the chest on chest to be off center to the piece, and make them more of a part of the top of the piece decor than "wall art" by doing so.

Have I annoyed you yet? :oP Now for the big piece of art...it really is far too large...sorry, but it is. This is a guest room...do you have a mirror for your guests? Perhaps that (in a lovely frame) would be a good choice for the wall instead?

Geesh! I gotta say I LOVE the room just like it is!!! I wouldn't upholester that bed it is gorgeous! Gosh I'm not much help, just wanted to say I love the room.

I think the room is very pretty, and love some of the things you have going on in there! I agree with igloo that the big pic does not belong ... too large, and I'm not sold on the frame with your other pretty things.

Would the bed fit on the wall that now holds the antique outfits? If so, I'd move it there. Then, I'd place the beside table you have on one side, and find a small oval table for the other side. On the wall where the bed is now, I'd hang the antique outfits together, about the height they are now.

The chest doesn't really work for me in there, but it IS nice for guests to be able to set their suitcase on. I'd try it at the bottom of the bed and see how it goes with the new arrangement.

Now, the bed. I love the spread. But, I'd like to see a new throw, one that is longer so the sides are the same length as the sides of the bedspread. I like the color, but you could always go with something floral (sages, oranges, reds) if you want. I also like the color in the decorative pillow, but I think that pillow is too large for the bed, so I'd change it out with something smaller. To spiff things up just a bit, and add some texture, I'd also add a contrasting blanket under the spread, and fold the tops of both down.

I agree with Igloo again re: how to decorate above the tall chest!

Love the room and the pieces in it! Do NOT upholester that bed! It is so beautiful as it is.

If I was a guest, I would never say these things to you... but since I'm not and you have asked....

I would HATE sleeping in there w/ the bed on the diag! Get out of bed in the dark, walk forward and WHAM into the wall! Trip at the foot, become discombobulated and end up wakeing the entire house up. LOL! It doesn't look like you have enough room to do that (thank goodness) w/out eating up the majority of the floor space. Side tables are very unuser friendly next to diag beds, too. Can you tell that I am not fond of this decorationg fad? ;)

It would be nice to have a light on the other side of the bed, too. DH and I both like to read in bed and hate just having one light source.

Is there a mirror in there somewhere? The 2 outfits would look nice stacked one over the other or add a third one and have them in a row.

I don't mind the trunk being of a different style than the rest of the furnishings as it adds the unexpected in addition to giving a spot to set a suitcase on.

Have to agree that the large art does not fit the space or the feel you are going for. Is this the only spot in the house for it? If it is... well... so be it. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to keep favorite things around you. :)

WT is fine as is or would be a great sewing project for you. A soft print of reds/golds/creams in plain, straight drapes would be softening and be easy to open and close for privacy.

The dresser looks fine as is. Is there a waste basket somewhere?

I do vote from removing the large picture and the trunk -- to open up both visual wall space AND floor space. Yes -- the two framed dresses would be lovely hung together for more impact.

I would like to see a covered table on one side of the bed with matching lamps on each side to unify the look. Very nice for guests to have lots of lighting options.

Would the bed fit on the long wall? Just another "outside the box" thought!!

With your sewing skills -- how about a fresh new duvet cover (and a duvet to go in it, of course!) and shams -- easy change that would give you several ways to "dress" the bed -- and changes for different seasons too! In fact, the cover and shams could be made with co-ordinating fabrics on each side -- for even more decor changes!

On the window -- if you choose -- I vote for a lined roman shade.

And yes -- a full-length mirror on the back of the door is another nice touch for guests too.

Beautiful room!! I love it! I love the London shade--I'd leave it! Since it's unlined, does it stay dark enough for guests? Is it easily let up and down? If not, then I'd think about mounting a roller shade behind it that would retract and be unnoticed.

I'd get rid of the trunk too since it's in the way.

I don't know if you have room for this, but it would be cool to have a comfy, upholstered chair in that corner beside the window with a floor lamp so that your guest could read. If you did this, I would get a different dresser that was shorter since it visually blocks off that corner.

In any case, the room is very pretty as is.

I really like your room, it is very pretty. I would definitely NOT upholster the bed, it is too pretty as is. I would think about possibly sewing a beautiful duvet cover and shams - fluffy duvets are welcoming for guests. I would also get rid of the trunk to open up some space and replace the large painting. Your wood furniture pieces are all very nice looking and IMO should stay. Have fun!

I forgot to mention that between the 2 shadowboxes are double closet doors which would be a perfect spot for the bed!! Damn.

Would it be bad to put the bed on the wall that the picture was on?? I always heard that you should be able to see the footboard when you enter a room?? The wall with the pic has the entering door but more wall space.

Yes, I do want to sew (with my newly acquired skills) a new duvet and pillows - what about a brown and creme toile?? If I moved the bed, I would then have room for drapes to each side.

I love diagonal beds, but then I have a big room. You do need to learn a bit about proper placement and bedside tables (you have to go round or triangle to make it work). But it's a great look.

Ok on the pictures and chest placement. Scoutch the chest over so that the picture with the pink flower is lined up with the bowl with balls right in front of it. That will align the pictures to one side of the chest instead of being centered as they are now, and will take them from being "wall" art to being part of the decor of the top of the chest.

Footboard visable huh???? I've never heard that, and in so many rooms it won't work. Frankly I prefer to have the headboard end of the bed hidden away from the open door myself since it allows for bit of privacy when you're doing things you might do in bed but forgot to close the door... But then I may just have nosey neighbors and cats who open doors...

I was just in a fabulous room in a lovely home built in1914. If you put the bed on the wall opposite the door, so you would see the footboard, you'd block the fireplace...in fact the rooms were all that way. You almost always had to place the bed on the wall with the entry door. Maybe the victorians had cats and neighbors too???

Brown and cream toile sounds gorgeous! Perhaps the addition of a striped material (in the same colors) would work as the backing fabric -- so you could flip or fold over the duvet --- and another pattern would show up. Then add a cream matelasse spread -- and the whole duvet could be fold across the bottom of the bed.

Also a solid brown tablecloth over a round table would be pretty too!

Not sure what you mean about the footboard being visible when you enter a room, but based on my very limited knowledge of feng shui, I believe the footboard should NOT face the doorway, or not be directly across from it anyway. Something about that being the position of death. I'm sure someone here knows more about it than I do. I'm no practitioner... although my bed is apparently positioned correctly, my master bathroom/toilet is in the "romance" corner of my room! LOL. From the pics, your room looks comfortable and cozy. I agree with what others have said about the overly-large picture and the trunk, and the other thing that sort of bothers me is the nightstand being partly in front of the window. And yes, as someone else said, it's really nice to have nightstands on both sides.

Although I like the look of seeing the bed as you enter the room, as igloo said, it is not always do-able. My headboard is on the same wall as the door with my dresser across from the foot of the bed. The night table being partially in front of the window, bothered me too. If you "flip" the bed, so that it is where the large picture is, I would place both baby outfits "stacked" where the "boy" outfit currently is. The second outfit should be hung a frames width under the first. Also move the chest to the wall where the "girl" outfit is now. A comfy reading chair will fit perfectly in front of the window where the chest is now! Add a table and lamp or just a floor lamp. Don't forget the throw!

Okay, now I found this quilt. I actually forgot about it- stored in that closet after I moved in! My DH's grandmother made and handpainted the state bird and flower for each state. It was before we went to a two letter abbreviation for the states!!

The colors are not quite right....but I could move my crewel chair up here and kinda work with it????
But, then I got really excited about the brown/creme toile. And the burlap skirted table. And the toile draperies.

OH.....make do with what I have = be sentimental or buy/make all new things????

The sage in the chair goes perfectly with the bedskirt and shade. the blue in the chair is not quite the same as the quilt. The quilt has more tealish in it.
Would the crewel chair go with brown/creme toile?? It is also a family piece I am trying to work in my house.

I am just all over the place with this room right now. Need direction. Thought I had it until I found the quilt. I can't imagine the time she put into making that.

Hi Johnatemp, I love that quilt. I don't have any advice - you are worlds ahead of where I am in decorating my home. But, what brand/color paint do you have on the walls in your foyer area? It is beautiful. You have probably said somewhere, but I figured it was faster to ask then to search. :)

I think either scheme would be nice, I personally love a room that has personal pieces so if the quilt is meaningful to you use it. Same with the chair. The chair definitely would work with the brown and creme, I would have to see it with the quilt, I can't tell from the photos. Sometimes things that don't quite go add to the charm of a room.

FYI in feng shui you definitely want your bed on the wall opposite the door but not in line with the doorway. So it should be about where you have it if I am understanding your room right. There is some really cool info on feng shui at about.com if anyone is interested. I did not, however, see anything that referred to any bed position as the "position of death" or anything like that.
