I'd stick with just a simple scarf. In this pattern you have to stitch all those squares together. I stopped making normal granny squares because I don't like to sew them together.

Sometimes I make just a big gigantic granny square.

Others here know so much more than I do, but I'll put in my 2 cents tonight.

I've used Chenille Thick and Quick for a scarf. I don't think it is as easy to work with as "regular" yarn. It's a little trickier since it's fuzzy. But you could do it, I'm sure.

Regular yarn? Maybe you mean worsted weight. Thick and Quick is a bulky yarn called #6 weight, and worsted weight is a #3 or a #4. If you use worsted, the afghan would probably not be the same size as the pattern says.

I've not been in a Hobby Lobby and never buy yarn at Joanns. My Michaels has tons of yarn, but it's always a gamble as to exactly what they will have. It can be disappointing to decide on a yarn and pattern and then go to the store which has a poor selection or none of the yarn you want.

I think I would discourage you for a few reasons. First of all, chenille sheds badly and here and there a stitch can be hard to rip out when you make a mistake. Ripping out makes it shed even more and you risk bald spots in the yarn if it knots up or has to be ripped out a few times.

Chenille cannot be washed. I am also surprised at the cost of the yarn listed with the pattern. This is an expensive project.

But you could make it or any other pattern using another yarn. If you really want to make this afghan, I might suggest a chunky yarn or using two strands of a nice worsted yarn. Wool is warm and cozy, and acrylic will be machine washable and dryable as well as moth proof. Be sure you have a big enough crochet hook too.

I also discourage beginners from making afghans with strips or squares until they have really practiced lots or made a couple of other items so they have a consistent size to their stitches. Gauge is very important when you make pieces that have to be exact matches with each other when they are sewed together in assembling. If you have not crocheted enough so as to develop even stitches, you will discover that your squares are all sorts of sizes when you try to sew them together, and that the first square is totally different from the 20th or 30th square you crocheted.

I highly recommend the Basketweave Throw pattern on the same site. I have made a few of them and it looks especially nice in a deep color. I like to add an edge by stitching single crochet around the edge for 2 to 4 rows, making the 3rd of those edging rows in another color.

Are you aware of No Dye Lot yarns? I like to use acrylic No Dye Lot yarns for big projects. That way, if I need to buy more, the new purchase will match the other yarn I bought previously. I have used No Dye Lot yarns I had bought years earlier to make something and then have been able to buy additional matching yarn to finish it up and had no problem. I don't think wool comes in No Dye Lot.

My Mom used to make all her crochet items from wool yarn (we secretly hated it but would never tell her) They were hard to wash and keep in shape. I remember when we introduced her to the - then new acrylic yarn what a difference. she felt it too since they were lighter and esier to work with.
I remember coming home from work and she'd say she just finished her "Three rows"
I like the Red Heart yarns and that new one I mentioned a while back "I Love That Yan" (from Hobby Lobby)

In all fairness to help her make the best choice for her, since nodakgal lives in North Dakota especially, wool is warmer. Something we don't need here in southern California.

I value your input ladies! I am not sure about yarns at all! I will rethink the Chennile definitly! I am not confident of not ripping out. LOL

I finished the dishcloth! LOL I am so proud I actually finished it. I assumed the squares throws would be the easiest, you know like a bunch of dishcloths! :) I didn't think of gauge. There is lots more to this crocheting than I thought.
Going to check out the Basketweave pattern SheilaJoyce recommended. Might see if there is a easy pattern for a scarf too.

Connie,here's an afghan that looks easy...good starter project.Or if you're not sure about doing double crochets yet...how about a ripple afghan?I saw one on the same site.They are all single crochet and very easy.Just have to make sure you count or it will go crooked.

Yes, that is it. It is all double crochet, so it goes fast. It is how you make the stitch attach to the row below that may make them call it intermediate. You go around the post of the stitch below instead of into the top of the stitch from the row below. I don't think of this as any particular challenge. And the dc stitches will go fast. I taught my DD to crochet, and this was her first project. It is not difficult at all. If you have some extra yarn, try it for a small square and see what you think.
