Question about sheets into curtains

Did you ever do it?

I'm leaning towards navy blue panels for the nursery and the only place I can find them in the 96" length (Yes, I am using long curtains.) is JCP for $35 a panel. These are unlined, washable, and I believe a cotton/poly blend.

I could buy them and may still do that but I feel like it's a waste. I only budgeted so much and I'd rather use the money saved towards something else in the room.

I was thinking about buying 4 flat twin bed sheets in a cotton/poly blend and making them into curtains. I don't know if I'd want to make a header at the top or just take out the side pocket and hem the bottom. I will be hanging the curtains high and wide so very little will cover the window.

My concern is I don't want them to LOOK like sheets so if I won't be able to pull it off, I'll just pay the money for real curtains.

Thoughts?

I've made sheets into shower curtains. Added button holes for the hooks. You couldn't tell they were sheets.

I recently purchased a square (perfect size) tablecloth from One King's Lane to make into a shower curtain for DD2.

imo, it depends on the quality of the sheets. I would try to buyer a better quality on sale.

You could make curtains from sheets, and I have done it before with print sheets, but in general the fabric is going to be rather thin, and probably will look like sheets.
Plus if you are just using the sheets as fabric, and still have to do all the work of making the curtains you might as well buy fabric to make them. Or another source for a heavier fabric that will make up into nice curtains is table cloths. Check out places like Target and Walmart like this one

I have used black plastic for the past several years and love it. You can either do as denninmi stated, or what i do is after a rain storm I walk around with a pointy stick and see where the water pools up and just poke holes in the pastic, has worked just fine. In my garden, the black plastic actually allows me to water less than I would otherwise due to the fact that it holds the moisture in. As far as slugs - I still have some slug issues, but not a ton. It does cook some both on top and under, but at night when it's cool, they still make it across to the veges once in awhile. As far as other products that are breathable, I have tried some and i don't like them for a few reasons. The main one being is they don't work very well as a weed barrier (weeds will still grow up and through them. In addition, while they do warm the soil some, they don't quite as much as the black plastic (using the wife's meat thermometer - shhh don't tell her!- it was a difference of almost 10 degrees in the spring time). The reason the I turned it was because it wouldn't get wet, and I thought that was the only way to get moisture throughout. It didn't seem to be doing anything when I just let it sit. I will try to get some browns in there I guess. I don't have enough UCG or veg. scraps to make much difference. And I purchased the cotton seed hulls for the veg. garden because I like the way they mat and don't blow away, but seems like everything I read suggests not to use them on veg, because they can use whatever chemicals they want on cotton since it isn't a food crop. Have you uploaded a current copy the stylesheet itself, and is the link to it possibly using a local path instead of a relative path? To invoke a stylesheet called "mainstyle.css" sitting in the root folder of a website, the call to the stylesheet within the header should resemble the following (enclose in angle brackets): link rel="stylesheet" href="mainstyle.css" type="text/css If you are trying to invoke the stylesheet form a subdirectory, put a "../" in front of the name of the stylesheet for each directory down you go. Ther are many, many, bad coding practices that look like they work within FrontPage (or are even done *by* FrontPage) that do not work (well) when placed on a properly functioning webserver.

I also would like to make these valances. As for lining, I think it depends on the weight of the fabric and the look you want to achieve. I would hold the fabric up to the window and see how the light affects it before deciding either way. Unlined would allow more light to filter through for more of a sheer look at the same time may wash out the pattern on the fabric. I learned this trick when selecting WTs at Calico Corners when a tone-on tone fabric I was considering was completly washed out when held up to a window--even with a lining, and so I ended up selecting a different fabric. Your WTs are both lovely as are my3dogs. I think either way can work, just depends on what overall look you are going for.

I should probably just scratch the idea unless I stumble across nice looking sheets for a great price.

I agree if the fabric is thin it isn't going to look nice.

I considered fabric but it sounded like less work somehow just using sheets. I guess it's not really.

Terriks those curtains from Ikea would be perfect and more what I would rather spend. I sooo wish Ikea would mail their curtains. I'd probably use them for everything. For the gas it would cost me to drive to a store, I should just buy the JCP ones.

Well making curtains was a short lived thought! :)

Much depends on the quality of the sheets you buy and how much work you put into making them look like curtains. A header is going to make them look more professional as will a real hem on the bottom.
It's the details that can make or break you in decorating.

If you're doing navy make sure they're lined if the sun hits them, even the morning sun. I made navy curtains for my son's room and they faded afer a couple of years. lol

FYI. I purchased this navy twill(see link) fabric last year from this company. They're having a sale and right now and it's $5.99 a yard. It would make great drapes.

Have fun planning the nursery. it's going to be so cute!

When I was a kid we always did this, using embroidered border sheets to match the linens. It was pretty easy: just the pleating tape and hemming and then hanging with the pleating pins, but we weren't worried about sun, even in sunny FL and they lasted just fine, since the sheets were good quality.

I don't think just hanging up a sheet with clips would necessarily work as well, though.

I bought Ralph Lauren white sheets to make some shabby chic ruffled curtain panels for DD's room. They are thin but I want a sheer look.

This reminds me that I need to start this project!

Forgot to add that after all sales discounts each twin sheet was only $9.99. I bought 3 for the curtains so it only cost $30 total. The least expensive premade multi-ruffled curtain I found was at least $60 a panel so the price was right in my case.
