Need Advice on Short-Term Storage during Remodel

I must empty the contents of my living room, dining room, kitchen and garage for a remodel job that begins in January. It is anticipated to take take two to three months for the job to be finished. I plan to pack as much as possible in moving boxes. There will be no upholstered items going into storage.

I am debating using an outside covered porch to store everything instead of using a portable storage unit that must be stored at a warehouse. The porch is quite deep, and it does not get wet, even when there is heavy rain. My idea is to use large tarps (under and over all the boxes and furniture) as an added layer of protection.

I live in a climate with moderate temperature and typically low humidity during winter and early spring. Is my idea of storing things on the porch for a a short time not a very good one? Would I be better off spending $600+ for a portable storage unit?

If anyone has done this and had either a good or bad experience, I would be so glad to hear about it. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I'd spend the money on a storage unit. It's only temporary. But be careful picking a storage unit. Make sure the place is "climate controlled" and well lit. You don't want dampness or bugs or anything bad to happen to your belongings.

One word: Theft

Use this as a reason to de-clutter. If it's not worth paying to store, it's not worth keeping.

Look into "Storage Pods" - the company delivers the pod, you fill it and then they haul it away. The disadvantage is that you have no access to your stored stuff until it is returned, but that might not be an issue for you.

My first question would be, do you have enough insulation between your house and root cellar? Maybe your house is keeping your root cellar too warm. As far as keeping long term, I don't. My market ends in October and doesn't start back until April/May. There are a few books I would recommend you read, maybe from the library, Stocking Up and RootCellaring are 2 that come to mind instantly. I use my Stocking Up (I have 3 editions) for alot of my questions. Good luck Marla

Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate everyone's input. Unfortunately, we can't create a deep enough shelf in the uppers to accommodate a microwave. The max depth allowed is 13" due to the space the Wolf will be installed (We have a fairly small kitchen). The only options are to either put the mw on the counter (again, small kitchen = limited counter space) or put it under the counter. I'm considering the under counter option. And I didn't even think about whether any vent upgrades would be needed, yikes! Thanks, a2gemini and babushka_cat for your input on that. The ripple keeps going :( I realize this really is the one chance we'll have to make the upgrade and I don't want to blow it. But, then again, it's coming at a fairly steep price. Lots to think about. I'll be mulling it over up until the very last minute.

I have quad outlets everywhere. I did them anywhere I d@mn well pleased in the kitchen, too. I can't tell you how many people said I didn't need them. Until I reminded them that electrical needs of the 30s and 40s changed dramatically in the 80s and 90s. Imagine what they'll be in the next 50 years. Just the list that looklakelaborcamp listed isn't even the beginning, if you really think about it. How many chargers? How many battery operated tools and cleaning implements do we have these days? OT: I had my windows and sliders on the front of the house taken out. I think I'm going to brick the front (after much research here on GW/Houzz) but first things first. I'm replacing my horrendous windows and sliders with Anderson casement windows and two sets of beautiful, 2" thick antique doors where the sliders were. Those sliders just plain sucked, as did the windows. Talk about leaky... My house looks like it's foreclosed upon, all boarded up. Doesn't help that my lawn was up to my waist. Who needs to buy grass seed? Just grow your own. I'm sure, though, that the scummy neighbors figure it's now mowed because it's going up for sale. I'm kind of afraid to leave! CL: 7 new windows $500. 4, exterior, antique doors $200. Labor: to take out? Free. To put back in? $100 a day and they will be PERFECT. If it takes longer than a day, given my weird house, it's $100 until that window is done! I can afford this.

I don't think it will be an issue unless your family is always dinging walls, furniture, etc. It's along a "side" wall and isn't a tight corner, so you should be fine. Just have the cabinetmaker include a decorative door appearance built into that side of the oven cabinet. It's not a decorative door applied to the side, it's actually part of the side. (I know there's a term for that, but I cannot think of it right now!)

Second word- critters.
The last thing you want is a family of mice taking up residence in your stuff and peeing/pooping all over everything.

A friend of mine has stored belongings for her adult children at different times, outside, over long periods of time in a somewhat similar manner. Their method is to pack everything into lidded storage tubs, and then cover the tubs with a good tarp. Apparently this has worked quite well for them. No idea what storage tubs are running these days, but moving boxes aren't that cheap either if you have to buy them. Wherever you end up storing your stuff, toss a box of mothballs around the base to discourage critters.

I think the covered porch idea is good provided that you are certain it can keep out the heavy rain for a long period of time. Will there be any moisture from vapour or dew that is formed after the rain has stopped? You might wish to experiment with the porch for a few weeks and if it can last that long, then you can probably use it for the next few months during remodelling.

If you use storage, get the insurance and use pallets to stack stuff on. Three months is a long time, not sure I would opt for that. Did you get second opinions. I have never heard of one taking that long.

January + 2-3 months = now.

The OP should have the remodel done by now, so storage is no longer an issue.
