Need advice ASAP! Piano hinge or not on corner cab door?
Comments (6)I had to go look at my door hinge because mine folds back nearly flat and I knew that I had never seen the hinge between the doors before. It's not a piano hinge, just two small regular hinges. It's really the other hinge--the one that connects the door to the cabinet that seems to dictate how flat the door can fold back. Mine wasn't as flat as I thought, but it has never gotten in my way in the slightest. I'm assuming yours will open in the direction of the sink, not the stove. Correct? I would not want the hinge to be visible when the door is shut. We also have natural cherry cabinets, and those small hinges are brass, which makes them even more invisible. It seems like chrome would really catch the eye, and not in a good way....See MoreNeed design advice: microwave in 28x40 upper corner space
Comments (12)I am new to this site so I will try to scan my layout and figure out to post the proposed design. I appreciate the comments and suggestions. Is there a way to directly respond to each posting or is posting like this the only way? I had really hoped to avoid having the microwave on the counter because my current counters have basically been "unusable" for decades because they are storage space instead of work space. The model ankh posted is interesting: it might eliminate the need for a 28 inch corner cabinet. My big concern is the size of that cabinet especially after I drew it out on tag-board. There are several models that will fit on a 12 inch deep shelf...my current one will, and I am okay with the lack of options in a small microwave. My husband is the one with "issues" with the blind corners and corner access in a 90 degree corner. I have read all the threads on them here. I was hoping to find a solution that would appease him and eliminate a 28" wide corner cabinet because of my concerns about its size. Does anyone have a corner cabinet this size? Does anyone have a corner cabinet that is 16-18" wide? Does anyone have a microwave in a lower cabinet...mine would have to be in the small island...I only have two places other than the corner with more than 12 inches of space. I need some input on how these option work and effective use of space. Today was my first day of back-to-school; I have a meet-the-teacher open house tonight but will try to post scanned plans when I get back. Comments (42)May be I should describe my use of the kitchen. I cook for breakfast and dinner, for a family of 3. Breakfast is simple, may be some eggs or just toast. Dinner is 95% stir fry, with some stew or soup or roast at times. I am the only person cooking 99% of the time. @palimpsest Thanks I absolutely agree with your thought. But may be because I am new to this(first timer), I am still not getting why a range on the current fridge side is better? I would really appreciate if someone can explain. @cluelessincolorado Thanks for the suggestion. That is definitely something I can consider. It is just more involved as wall demolition and build is involved. I would definitely consider this if I cannot find a way to not move the wall at this point. @caligirl5 Yes I do agree that table is not doing us much good here. If I do not remove the table in the intermediate stage, i plan on using it as a counter top when I'm cooking so the narrow gap is not really my concern. and yes, there is more room between the current fridge and dishwasher. The reason it looks narrow on the plan is because i took measurement in the interior of the whole floor but it seems the visio dimensions are exterior. And because i make other rooms before kitchen, i shrink some walk space width to accommodate other items. SO between the fridge and dishwasher there is at least another 8 inches in space....See MorePlanning kitchen remodel – need design advice please!
Comments (14)damiarain and mama goose - thank you for those bold and beautiful layouts! You've found a graceful solution to a lot of my wishes. I'm on the fence about windows to the fridge/stove side of the house, because it faces our driveway and the neighbor's (not so attractive) yard and house. But the natural light would be wonderful! Great food for thought, thank you again. I'll have to check the space to see if there's room for dining table in kitchen. What's that great layout software you're using? rantontoo - We don't absolutely need two spaces to eat, and I had thought about shifting that door as you describe -- it would be between kitchen and DR. That way the traffic lane wouldn't go through the kitchen. I just couldn't figure out a good way to do that. Unfinished crawl space is underneath the whole main level where kitchen, etc. are....See Morerantontoo
