What is Your State Pie!

Indiana's is the sugar cream pie. I know there are other states that have state pies, do you know what your state pie is?

Arkansas- The Natural State. The name means "south wind". Our beautiful lakes and rivers are a main draw for people. This state is very rich in minerals and has the only open-to-the-public diamond mine in the world. Lots of forest land and we grow rice better than any other state, along with other crops. I live near Eureka Springs, which is a tourist town also referred to as "a little Switzerland". It was attractive to people starting in the late 1800s because of the healing properties of all the springs. Ozarka water was first bottled here. Arkansas is home to Wal-Mart, too. We moved here from FL to get away from crowds and hot, hot weather. Now we have 4 seasons and no neighbors and the closest real traffic light is about 22 miles away, in a town that has just about everything we'll ever need. :)

I LOVE pie, it's probably my favorite dessert. All the summer fresh fruit ones are my current favorites: peach, raspberry, blueberry and on and on. In the fall, it's pumpkin or apple. Spring would be rhubarb or strawberry/rhubarb. Winter: any custard or cream or lemon. Don't think I ever turned down a piece of homemade pie! Don't care much for the store bought ones. Susan (whose weight reflects her pie consumption).....

I make a lime pie where I melt semi sweet chocolate bits and line the baked pie shell with a layer of chocolate before I add the lime filling. That reminds me of a similar step used to make "Heart Tarts." They have a thin layer of chocolate, a cheesecake-like center, and strawberries on top. Philadelphians may know their source, the old Commissary. Tart Shells 1 1/2 cups flour 2 tablespoons sugar 6 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening 3 tablespoons cold water Cream Cheese Filling 8 ounces softened cream cheese 3 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Assembly 3 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 2 pints of strawberries 1/3 cup sieved or seedless raspberry jam 1 Make the shells: In the bowl of a food processor, combine the flour, sugar, butter, and shortening. Whiz for several seconds until crumbly. Add the water and whiz until the dough forms a ball. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let rest at room temperature for 1/2 hour. 2 Preheat the oven to 350°. Bring the dough to a workable temperature and divide into 6 equal portions. On a floured surface, roll each portion of dough into a circle large enough to drape over the back of one of the (heart shaped) gelatin molds. Trim off any excess and prick the molded dough several times with a fork. Set the 6 molds dough-side-up on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until pale gold and crisp. Cool the shells completely while still on the molds. 3 Make the filling: In a mixer or food processor, combine all the ingredients until smooth. 4 Assemble tarts: Fill the tarts as close to serving time as possible. Melt the chocolate in a small pan over simmering water, then divide it among the 6 shells and spread evenly over the bottom of each. Let the chocolate cool 10 minutes before filling. Divide the cream cheese filling among the 6 shells. Stem the strawberries and toss gently with the jam to coat. Top each tart with 5-8 berries (depending on their size) stem-end-down. Yield 6 individual heart-shaped tarts

"I have lived in the San Franciso Bay area by the way." I said nothing disparaging about the South other than to say fried food is much more common than in other parts of the country. And that parts of Missouri I've been to (yes, the southern part) seemed much more "Southern" than not. That was in response to littlebug's photo showing that cafe's every special that day, dessert included, was fried. I'm sure living in different places had many positive aspects for you. Are you the person who mentioned some time ago having spent time living in Davis? With the exception of UCD that gives it some of a college town vibe that could be anywhere, I think Davis is much more accurately described as a Sacramento Valley location than a Bay Area one. Don't you?

I don't believe that Wisconsin has a state pie. I nominate, "Pie in the Sky", based on how our legislators are dealing with reduced tax returns and what to do about budgets. The coffer is in danager of running dry before it can meet unemployment obligations.

But if we did have a "pie", it would be cherry pie commerating the cherry orchards in Door County.

I don't know that we have a state pie. Pecan Pie seems to be the choice around here since we have so many pecan trees.

We don't have an official state pie but if we did it would have to be Boysenberry.

The berry was developed in Napa,California in the early 1920s by Rudolph Boysen. Later Walter Knott acquired the berry plant, had better success with it and began marketing it in 1935. The unique berry and his wife's fried chicken dinners were the beginning of Knott's Berry Farm as a tourist attraction.

Oh, great, something else for the Texas legislature to waste time on--selecting a state pie! I don't think we have one, but if we do, it would probably be peach pie. Texans are really fond of peaches!

Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie

Ingredients:
1 (9 inch) pie crust, baked
8 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup white sugar
4 tablespoons butter,
melted
2 1/4 cups half-and-half or evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons butter,
melted
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Directions:
1. Mix flour and sugar. Add 4 tablespoons butter and half and half. Cook, stirring constantly, until thick and creamy. Add vanilla. May be made in the microwave oven.
2. Preheat oven broiler to high.
3. Pour mixture into pie crust. Drizzle 2 tablespoons butter over top and sprinkle with nutmeg. Put in oven at 400 F. and bake for 15 min.--watch it carefully as it doesn't take long. Refrigerate

There are many versions on the internet. This is one I use most of the time.

Given the clowns in the Illinois State Legislature, it would be any pie topped with whipped cream -- and thrown.
