I've been remiss in bookmarking the links folks have posted here for their favorite foodie sites (aside from this wonderful site). Can you share again please.

I have many, Ann's blog- Thibeault's Table, Sol's blog- Memories in the Baking, Monique's blog- La Table de Nana- http://latabledenana.blogspot.com/, but additionally I enjoy the writing & recipes on the Pioneer Woman's blog and also Serious Eats.
Blogs are wonderful, but I it takes so much time to read them all!

If you have the space, you might want to consider quaking aspen. The heart shaped leaves shimmer with even the slightest breeze, which I love about them. They color up yellow in autumn and have white bark, so you have seasonal interest really most of the year. We never had disease trouble with ours, but sadly needed to remove them. You see, they have a dark side... these are grove trees and put out significant root systems and suckers, so shouldn't be planted in small, suburban back yards like mine (we had to pull out 13 trees from out backyard- installed by previous homeowner- as the roots were invading the irrigation system). Our western exposure catches a fair amount of wind and we never had branches break. There were a few branches that we cut after they drooped and weakened significantly with that ice storm we had 3 years ago. (for the record, I'd droop too, if I had to weather that bizarre weather condition for as many days!) Other than that, no pruning at all. With a pasture sized area, this tree might be a great option for you, though other readers of this thread may weigh in otherwise. Aspens do grow tall enough to provide shade until the foliage drops, but here in the NW the weak winter sun is a gift, and you won't miss the leaves. If we had a large enough plot of land, I would definitely include this tree again. Until then, I am happy discovering smaller trees more suitable to my small back yard. Good luck in your research! Davesgarden has half-accurate info blended in with contradictory user contributions. Read with great caution and realize that some people's experiences or negative comments on plants are based on their brown thumb or limited experience since they killed their plant the first time by bad care or site location, etc. Do google image searches for various key words, or just go to the bookstore and finger through tropical books for one rich in photos that catches your eye and meets your aesthetic.

oh kathy--i'm sorry to hear that! i figure dad really has been pleased along the way but he's not gonna let us know that because it would just be out of character, ya know? anyway, that's the way i hope it is, and for you too! attached is a pic from this summer when i went home for a visit and includes my little sister and her daughter. you'd think he'd smile then but again, it's not his way. but he most assuredly loves us and was always one of the hardest working men i know! my oldest brother was born with a number of problems and needed numerous operations through his young adulthood. insurance didn't cover that--dad worked several jobs for a number of years to take care of things. fortunately, the other 4 of us were fine but man, not a decent set of teeth in the house! we all had braces because they thought that was important, even if we weren't exactly thrilled at the time. in fact, i remember being particularly resistant to the idea but i'm certainly happy my parents were smart enough to just plod on and take care of things. the other important thing was education. we were free to pick a career but by golly, we were going to college! i have no idea how they did it, but each of us was given that opportunity and a couple of us even finished! but i don't recall that turning him into a grinning fool either--not even when my youngest brother got his JD and a couple years later, his PHD. it's just not his way, you know? i'm sorry some of you are missing your dads--i do know what that's like. Mom died 20 years ago and that's been harder on poor pop than anything else i'm sure. he said at the time that his biggest regret was that they didn't get to celebrate their 50th anniversary--they only made it to about 46. sure wish i knew a way to fix that one... but it's almost time to pack up his christmas box. and we found the cardigan sweater vests that he wears all winter long and that i wasn't able to find the last 2 years. maybe it won't exactly make him smile, but i think it might at least please him a little bit. that and a few more cadbury bars and an extra large jar of WHOLE cashews (old family joke) and NO dry or clumpy popcorn, even though i know he'll be eating the nuts and the chocolates instead of breakfast. but at 91, i think he ought to be doing whatever he wants, don't you? happy birthday again, pop! A lot of the blogs I visit come from food porn at FoodGawker. FoodGawker

I have Ann's blog on my Opera web page and this blog too
Cooking for Seven
And two others one is based on Nourishing Traditions and the other is Gluten Free.
But I have another 20 in my favorites that I visit once a week or so..

No doubt this is very obvious - but I find www.epicurious.com to be very useful. Especially with the large number of reviews for many recipes, it helps me decide what might be good and whether to make adjustments.

I'm curious about why nobody else mentioned epicurious? Is it too much of a newbie site (hence it suits my needs well). Or is everyone assuming we know about epicurious and only mentioning less obvious sites?

I subscribe to finecooking, so I find their website, wwww.finecooking.com to also be useful with plenty of good recipes and reviews. But I think they charge for online access to some of the recipes and features (like favorites).

I have already checked out and bookmarked some of the blogs mentioned here. thanks.

Lynn, I tap into Epicurious frequently. Not sure why no one mentioned it, but perhaps for the reason you said...it's assumed that everyone here knows of it.

Some sites which I refer to when I'm looking for a known dish but want to see their version of the recipe:

Delia Online - for British dishes

Marions Kochbuch - German recipes with some translated to English

Karlos ArguiÃ±ano A known Spanish chef, for checking a Spanish recipe.

I also like to visit Sol, but otherwise don't look at food blogs while I'm dieting LOL.

I've been using Allrecipes.com a lot. I don't know if it has the best recipes but I LOVE the way it's organized and wish other cooking websites were done the same way. I can go to any catagory then sort by RATING so the highest rated recipes are at the top. It also shows how many ratings (reviews) there are for each recipe. I can search a catagory like main dishes or salads, or I can put in an ingredient like zucchini, then put the recipes in order by rating. We have six in our family plus one son-in-law. I think it's so helpful when cooking for a big bunch to find recipes that are appealing to a wide range of tastes.
Just as an example, this is what comes up when I sort zucchini recipes by rating. (put link below)

I've been looking for other websites that are organized the same way. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of finding recipes my picky bunch will eat.

Like Christie, I use Allrecipes.com. I like to read about what others have to say about a certain recipe before trying it myself. Today I am making sweet & sour chicken wings, veggie pizza, and cottage cheese black beans salsa for the Super Bowl game. All these come from Allrecipes.com. So far, they all turned out very good.

I love recipezaar and allrecipes. They are very much alike in their organization and I have great recipes from both.

I used to do several blogs but now I'm pretty much down to Tastespotting's. I love it because each page has 36 photos with mini descriptions of food that link to that recipe/blog site if you hit on the pics. It's great because there's no wording, no music, little advertising, and great looking dishes. Nice and easy!

Instead of starting a new thread I figured I'd add to this one.

I'm nosing around looking for a 'duck pho' recipe since I have the appropriate broth in my freezer(yes, at 5:00 AM and no one is up yet).

I stumbled on a blog called 'The Yummy Mummy - In the kitchen with a couple of spatula-wielding toddlers' - her discussion with her toddler about the duck they were going ot have for dinner gave me a chuckle. I think we've all gone through this phase where the kids realize we might be eating something we petted or talked on TV.

The directions for duck pho broth from a carcass was book-marking worthy as well!
