I'm always on the hunt for great tropical garden pictures on the internet. Anyone have a favorite(s)?

Have you found any good ones? I need some new ideas for 2 large areas I am starting to plant now and I haven't found a good site with really good pictures.

I included my link that has a few pics under the gardening pictures heading.

Check out this site. My favorite because it has an outstanding gallery of tropical photographs and members from all over the world that discuss tropical and exotic plants. You can view some of it as a guest or join to see everything. There is no cost to register as a member. The only requirement is to post within 7 days if you register as a member. Enjoy.

interduction is introduction! One suggestion if you are sincere is to give specific information for your area. There is much generic advice covering the U.S. but little specific for any given area. When I started my website years ago I tried to give advice for zone 5a growers as thee was little available elsewhere. Since then many books have been written and thanks to sites like the Rose Forum much more cold climate rose growing advice is available. Join a local rose society to get as much local information you can. Grow lots of different varieties to improve your knowledge and test/try various methods so your readers beneft from your mistakes. Don't copy others. Make it personal. A simple Google search can get most of the information people need so having well rounded local information in one spot would help. Visit rose gardens across the state and country for hands on experience. Put some authority behind your site. By joining the American Rose Society and becoming a Consulting/Master Rosarian you let people know you know what you're talking about. Check out my site. Glenda, lots of work, but I too love older homes. This one is really special to us and yes it did call out to us. We can't take credit for much of the renovation as the PO did much of the interior work. However, we picked up where he left off when he moved to another old house (in much better repair). When we purchased it there was not one perennial flower in the yard! Tammy, we have 4 "squeaking" wood screen doors! :-) One on each of the porches on the house. I am lucky in that both DH and I are lovers of old homes. natal, doubt there is anything in store for the pink "blob". Maybe, sometime down the road, we may try to remove it but it will be a very tedious job. We did think of painting just the brick on that side of the house as it is not visible from the road, but decided we did not want to do that. Guess we just consider it part of the character of the old house. My only concern with the new color scheme is that it won't blend as nicely with the garden room colors of pink,blue,red and whites. The new colors are an olive green, yellowish gold and rust, historical colors. With the green being the primary color. oceanna, thank you. miracle? nope, just hard work, if we can do it so can others. I am playing around with the idea of blogging, but not sure if I want to commit to the time involved with doing that, or if anyone would want to read it. I have seen many of your "eye candy" posts and have thoroughly enjoyed them. You are a very caring person to spend the amount of time it must take to share all those beautiful pictures! gramma jan, yes, so far it does look like it is unanimous. That surprises me as I thought for sure some would say it was done, and it was time for me to move on. If I would remove it, it would not be until next year. I will finish the 2009 page for this year. Others with opinions? Any "nay" sayers?

Strange I didn't get any popup's guess my blocker was working. They truly are annoying. Sometimes I need to remind the popup blocker that it is on duty or at least should be. We are in the process of slowly removing most of the turf. I do my planning on paper, but that site has some other good stuff if you can get the pop ups to go away. I was just thinking that if I could draw it on the computer with plants I could see it after I decided what I wanted. If only I could figure out how to post photos and drawings here I could show you what areas we are working on. One area we are working on is a hill that is very steep. It is 8' wide and 42' long, on the north side of our house and no direct sunlight. We also are going to put in a few other areas. We have winter sown mostly natives. Although we will use non native ground covers on the hill as well. The one area I am having the hardest time visualizing is a fence with clematis. I took most everything other than the clematis out and am now working on what to put in that will complement the clematis and not get to tall so they don't get their needed sun. That garden area is curved and basicly 6' x 20'. The garden then curves around a corner and becomes a cottage garden style. It has full sun. Beyond those two we will expand existing gardens. We are on a corner lot so we have the boulevard to work on as well. Our lot is only 40' x 123', but very hard to work on it is all slope and hill. Errosion is a real problem so we have to do it slow and easy or the whole yard will end up in Minnehaha Creek. I think the best idea is to have the spring plant swap here and get suggestions from everyone that comes. Pauline

Seems like a difficult business to be in some days. :-) I did a quick search on amazon and came up with this link and another at the bottom of my post. http://www.amazon.com/Operate-Financially-Successful-Landscaping-Business/dp/1601382286/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1279400638&sr=1-1-fkmr2 I would say find a business that is successful and see if you can pick their brain. We seem to be seeing a lot of nurseries going out of business, isn't that true? I would think it's expensive especially if you have to keep greenhouses going. I know Lexington Gardens went out of business a few years ago, and you could see it coming for quite a few years. I was told by someone in management that the cost of fuel to run the greenhouse became outrageous. I know the owner was older and started to have health issues too. As a potential customer, I like that you are inclined toward natives and would love an organic direction as well. I travel a distance to make purchases that are in line with those two basic ideas. I drive 50mins to the NEWFS to buy native, mostly organically grown plant material. I drive the same distance to purchase organic vegetable starts in the spring, in years I don't start my own. I travel to Maine and combine a day trip to justify doing it, to purchase popular perennial and annual 'plugs' once a year in early spring, because so many nurseries that are close to me don't offer a plug size and have just about stopped offering the old '6 pack' size. I buy tiny shrubs from Bluestone Perennials because no one local offers that size and it makes it really affordable. I think a lot of people buy from them because of that and their frequent sales and great customer service. I was going to suggest that if you could model your business on one that didn't need heated greenhouses, you might be ahead of the game. Don't know if that is possible. It would certainly cut your costs, but limit what you offer. Anyway, maybe others can offer their own reasons why they shop at one place or another and what they are looking for in a nursery. I'm probably rather biased, but my favorite is Botanescapes.

Sometimes I use a shotgun approach and search Google "images" using combinations of words like : tropical, bali, courtyard, patio, etc.

Davesgarden has half-accurate info blended in with contradictory user contributions. Read with great caution and realize that some people's experiences or negative comments on plants are based on their brown thumb or limited experience since they killed their plant the first time by bad care or site location, etc.

Do google image searches for various key words, or just go to the bookstore and finger through tropical books for one rich in photos that catches your eye and meets your aesthetic.
