Does anyone have Windows 7? My new computer has it and I have a question. Where do I turn off the auto fill? I don't like that it auto fills in my sign in name, ie: on my email accounts, on places where I have ordered things, etc. Is there a way to turn it off? My email address starts with an x and so does my son's. So when I start to type in my sign in...it gives the option to pick his or mine. I don't want it to do that. Suggestions? Thanks!

Never mind...the genius in my son came through and he figured it out for me. Of course, I had to listen to the "should have got an Apple" speech. LOL

When Mr. Smarty begins the "Apple" thing, ask him how do you open a Word document? Those who do genealogy largely are users of MS Word and a large percentage of their files are *.doc or *.docx files. The folks with Windows systems have to convert files being sent to Apple users else they can't read them. - A pain! I was under the impression that a Word file oould be opened with an Apple computer provided it was equipped with certain software, but am not sure. In any event, I have a correspondent who is an Apple user and is not computer savvy. She can not open my *.doc files. When I send her anything from my collection, I have make a *.rtf copy for her. So, where is the Apple advantage?

When you speak of upgrading "my Dell computer", you're not speaking of installing an upgrade over top of XP are you? If so, I misunderstand, so disregard the rest of my post. :) So I'm assuming you intend to purchase a retail version of Windows 7 and do a clean install. In the first line of your post you mention 512 MB of RAM, a date, and then 2.00 GB of RAM. Does that mean it now has 2.00 GB of RAM or maybe 2 1/2 GB of RAM? Either way, I'm no expert but I'd think 512 MB is less than enough, but either 2 or 2 1/2 GB would be fine. I don't know much about Office, but wasn't Office 2003 was the last version that had the old style menu, before the newfangled ribbon came along. According to this, your Office 2002 would not be compatible but according to this, Office 2003 would be. Would your 2002 macros work in 2003? I don't know. Would it be worth the expense of buying a retail version of Windows 7, as well as Office 2003(or at least Word)? To me, probably not, to you, only you can decide. Personally, since it works, I'd probably just continue using it. Continue running a good real-time AV, occasionally scanning with a couple on-demand malware tools(Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware come to mind), use Firefox or Chrome(lie detected), using the WOT add-on(trusting it somewhat less than fully), and being careful what I open(email) and what I install. Yes, I do know you're not suppose to shut computer down with the power button but is was an all else failed situation and even that didn't work. Step two for me was to unplug the thing to shut it down and that's probably a terrible thing to do. But eventually it did start back up after several scary seconds. I just hope I don't have that problem again but it does seem to be an issue for some with windows 7.

I am using Firefox. So far today things seem to be running ok. The pictures were not a camera photos but images of something found on a website by my friend. Usually she or I will find a cute idea to craft and will send a picture of it. No problem in the years or days past everything always opens. Even when my friend had sent me a link to a site all I got was that blank page. Maybe firefox caught up with the new Adobe reader. Iris I don't get anything like this in my e-mails. The images just always open. On my list is to buy a pictorial Windows 7 book. I could really use it. I thought I may do ok with this new widows but there are some things that is different or sofware like my music software that will not work as it was outdated and no longer being made. Still have to work this issue out.

You're very welcome, Urlee. I know the frustration of trying to get a new system to do exactly what you want it to do. The February updates were OK. It was the January updates that wreaked havoc with our systems. But that being said...most of the troublesome updates were either removed by MS or corrected. That still doesn't remove the possibility of problems but at this point...I doubt it. MS did away with Gadgets some time ago. I think over three/four years ago. After offering them...they decided they only gave another point of entry for beasties...so they discontinued them. I'm surprised you found the weather gadget. Is it one that you transferred from you old system? Better you should go into your local TV weather site and download a link to their site for your weather. Or link to the National Weather Service...as I do. They're much better than the gadget ever was as far as predictability and reliability are concerned. Enter you zip code in the appropriate box and you'll find daily/weekly forecasts for your area as well as all other weather info. http://forecast.weather.gov I don't use Win Live at all...for anything. I'm a MS Office "girl" and purchased Office 2010 after 2003 reached the point that it wasn't being supported. I use Outlook for my mail program and recommend it whenever I'm asked. I believe that MS offers a free version of Outlook that you might want to take a look at. I don't know all the particulars about it but I'm sure you can find it if you check the MS download site. Beyond that...I don't think your problems are with Acer. I think they're with MS Win7...and once you get over a few bumps in the road setting up your system just the way you want it...you'll be fine. It's just the initial shock of having to get used to new "things". That's why I always hang onto whatever version of Win I'm working with until the very last breath of air remains in the program. :-) I went kicking and screaming from XP 2 directly to Win 7 a few years ago...hating every minute of the acclimation period. But now I think it's the best program MS has offered since XP 2 and I'll probably put up an equal fuss when I have to go to Win 10. :-) Anne

Be prepared to be laughed at and embarrassed if you choose to ask that question! Of course you need software to open Word documents on a Mac. Keep in mind, Windows will NOT let you open a Word file without software either! You have to buy Word or Office for Windows, or Word or Office for Mac. Another option is OpenOffice, also available for Windows and Mac.

Seems to me it would be far better to save documents in .RTF anyway, it's far more universal. But don't blame the machine because the operator doesn't know how to use it.

Apple has certain advantages, and Windows has certain advantages. Personally I can't justify paying 3 times the price for an Apple. And I don't know if there's the little gadget programs available that use constantly.

About a year ago, we bought a new computer with Vista or Windows 7. DH hated it, paid money to ininstall it and get back Windows XP.

Both my husband and my son have Apples. I had one years ago, but I hated it. I could never "get" it. I couldn't give it away. I didn't blame the computer. I just had this HUGE mental block with it. They both love theirs and I am glad they do. If I need something my Windows can't do...I ask them. And vice versa. So...it is a happy medium...however, I do get laughed at when I say something about the Apple. LOL

My son put windows 7 on mine last weekend and i've been cursing it all week.He came by tonight and switched it back to windows xp.Still has a little work to do tomorrow,but at least now i can find stuff again.I hate changes,especially technical ones.I'm too old for all that ! !! LOL
