Greenhouse pictures week 2

"The first plants are here; The first plants are here."

Said with the same enthusiasm as Steve Martin in The Jerk; "The new phone books are here, the new phone books are here."

Yesterday and today we had 3 shipments come in. 2 More are expected tomorrow.

Boxes and boxes and we're just like kids on Christmas morning.

30 minutes later.

most of the plants come in as plug trays. These are 72 count trays of New Guniea Impatiens. Plug trays vary from 50 to 512 plants per tray depending on the variety and the grower.

The streptocarpus are in bloom already.

The heliotropes are blooming, too.

Most of the plants will be pinched back to encourage them to branch out. We'll spend most of next week picking out the plants one at a time and planting them into 4 or 4 and a half inch pots. Also, some will go into hanging baskets.

Awww Ron, now what am I supposed to do with these itchy fingers I am getting from looking at your pics? ;) I can't go out and dig in the snow! lol

The shelves.... We originally wanted a 30" x 12" niche but when we opened up the wall, there was a septic vent smack in the middle. We decided on 2 niches instead, I wassn't about to mess around with those pipes. When figuring the tile layout for the design I wanted, our friend suggested that we oversize the niches so the tile would lay out nice - he suggested 18 x 18 niches and I freaked. But the 12x12 would not have been big enough for the 3 kids and all their stuff. He suggested a granite shelf on the bottom and then one above it to make a shelf for soap, razors, etc. We talked about the length and width of the shelves, but never the depth. When I picked up the shelves from the granite fabricator, I freaked - they were 1 1/4" thick just like the countertop was being made. Friend said, don't worry, they would be perfect. They are. I honestly wouldn't want them any thinner. When he laid the tile, the bottom shelf slid in tightly and then he cut the bullnose on the side and the back tiles so the top granite shelf sits on the cut tiles all around. The tiles abouve the top shelf are full 6 x 6 and as you can see, we have enough height for those huge oversized shampoo and conditioner bottles. There is kerdi behind so no worries about water issues and they were all caulked and all afterwards. Being the over-emotional one, I figured this design that had been in head my for 2 years was ruined when I saw how thick those shelves were, but I wouldn't want them any different. I think they 'fit' the design perfectly as is. And I just love the niches. Before, the kids had a tiny corner shelf and bottles were all over the place, now there is enough room for everything plus space for guests when they are here.

Bonnie, you are doing great! And you are right, it does seem like things are getting harder. I guess they get easier if we stick to it, though, right? ( I hope!!) Annie, that is awesome!!!!! Congrats! Beth, wow about waitressing. I really think it is such a tough job, one of the toughest. How did your weight training go? I am a little less into it this week. Tried a new DVD from a friend but it was so repetitive and I hurt my knees a little. Also got my period EARLY (very early) so I have to deal with that. Missed my workout yesterday despite getting up very early because I had to make things for my mom's b-day . . .but I made myself get up early today to get the workout done, so I didn't miss any! Whew. I see, though, that if I can't do it in the a.m., it is very hard to fit it in at any other time. I really want to get some light equipment and new DVDs. Something easy on the knees but that will really strengthen my legs, butt, etc. to help with my knees. Ideas?

I had a long message I posted a few days ago . . .apparently it didn't go through! Annie, re: cellulite, I do think carbs/diet is part of the picture, but I also think it's far more complex than just that. And, unfortunately, it's hard as a vegetarian to limit carbs , but of course, avoiding refined carbs is always a good thing. I do always eat them with fats/protein-- always. As I stated in another thread, I had it since when I was 13! I was underweight, even. My mom does not have it (lucky!) but my aunt did, very badly. There are many causes and it's not understood so well. In my case, I think it's a mix of genetics and hormones. I am going to try dry-brushing to help with my circulation (some say it's tied to the lymphatic system); supposed to yield good results. We'll see . . . Joanie, the best thing is that, even though you feel discouraged, you are not quitting. That counts for a LOT. That is when it's the hardest, I am finding . . .so yay you!!! I suggest you throw the scale away. I really do. The scale does not mean anything. You can gain muscle and feel like you are not losing fat! It's very deceptive. You can retain water weight (or lose it)-- and then what? If you really need numbers, measure yourself with a tape measure. The easiest thing, though, is just to see how your clothes fit. I strongly suggest you add weights to your routine. Building muscle is so good for you (bone density!), AND, the more muscle you have, the better your metabolism is. Have you had physical therapy for your back? I wonder, too, how your "core/center" strength is. (See link below.) The trick will be to find a workout that does not further injure or strain your back/neck . . .I agree that perhaps jogging is not so good for your back at this point. Maybe you need something lower impact? In any case, I am really, really hoping you find answers soon because back pain can affect everything. I am so sorry you have to deal with this. :( Legomom, the Fitbit sounds like a great idea! If you want to add the plank and stretch, just plan ahead of time exactly when you'll do them, and you will get it done! Outside, that sounds like a fun trip! Does your DH exercise with you? I worked out with a ballet video that I hadn't used for awhile this am. I am really thinking that (for me), variation is key. Because each DVD is different, they each work the body in a slightly different way, giving more challenge. Even if one is a little easier, if I've put it away for awhile and come back, I get a benefit from it due to the variety. Yay to everyone for sticking with this, even when we don't feel like it! Patience, Rita, patience. To answer some questions. As for transplanting the plug tray of pansies. It's a many step process. First the flats are filled with soil. Flats are the trays of 4 paks. Then the plugs are popped out with a plug dislodger. Sometimes this works very well, at other times it doesn't and we pop them out with a small dowell. Then they'rer actually planted. Next they're transported from the headhouse (where all the planting is done) to the greenhouse. After they're lined up on the bench they're watered well. with a crew of 4 we can do a plug tray in 35 to 45 minutes. I have to admit that I never looked at the labels to see what seeds Joel has started already. My bad. Nearly all the veggies and herbs are started from seeds. During the growing part of the greenhouse season there are 4 of us in addition to Joel at the greenhouse most days. When it gets real busy with selling in May we'll be up to 10 or 12 people on the weekends. By the end of June it will be just 1 person plus Joel. He has one pretty much full time employee from early Feb. to the end of October. Her name is Laurie and she does lots of scrapbooking in the winter months. She's quite camera shy. The greenhouse is a great place to work. Most of us are in our mid 50's so we listen to a lot of CD's, classic rock.(The Stones, 3 dog night, Aerosmith, etc.) Laurie is the kid. She's only in her mid 40's. At least 2 or 3 times a week she'll play a BeeGees CD. I keep telling her that disco is dead but she doesn't believe me. And, yes, Blossom is a very sweet dog. For those of you that have never had the streptocarpus,do yourself a favor this year and get one,or 2 or 3.I love those things and for me here in S.Calif they last forever,and those dancing purple flowers are gorgeous.

Those pics make me anxious for Spring, but I haven't finished all the things I promised myself I would do over Winter. They do inspire me to get busy on my To Do list.

I guess I missed something...I figured he would start from seed and grow them...

I didn't know a greenhouse could order from a greenhouse to sell.

Not anything against it...Just didn't know it was done that way..

A few years ago, one of our nurseries had some flats of impatiens plugs for sale at a terrific markdown. What a steal.....and they grew so quickly when I got them out of their little holes. I've never seen them available like that again. Thanks for the greenery this morning.

There's lots of activity in the greenhouses around here as well. I can see people buzzing around in them as I drive by on my way to work each morning. I can't wait.

Oh how lovely!! Are the heliotropes fragrant? I love the way their sweet aroma wafts thru the warm summer evening air. I saved my streptocarpus just in the nick of time this year...it is HUGE! I love that plant.

I'll try and answer a few questions that came up.
kathi, my brother owns a greenhouse and nursery. I work for him until the snow melts and the ground thaws out so that I can start landscaping.
Pattico, years ago most greenhouses started their own plants from seed. Now, that has become a very specialized industry. They're called plugs. Plugs can be produced in mass quanties cheaper than Joel could start them himself. Of course then you're limited to what's offered. There are some varities that can't be found in plugs so he still starts a few things from seed. The plugs transplant much faster than seedlings. In a few weeks I'll try to show you some pictures that illustrate the difference.
lynnd, yes, the heliotopes are very fragrant. My sense of smell is not very good and even I can smell them.
And I'll get more pictures of Blossom for the next installment.
