I know this post isn't really about organizing, but in another way it is, so... I hope it's ok to pay tribute here to this forum and the people who make it happen.

I just want to say Hi, I'm back home after being away for 5 weeks to have neck surgery...finally I'm fixed...just have to get better now. I literally have my head screwed on now...with the xrays to prove it!!

Anyway, I just want you all to know that in the 6 awful months of being pretty much bedridden before having surgery, it was all you folk on here who kept me sane. I read every archived message, and while I couldn't actually DO much housework, it really helped when I could do a bit.

I still have to do plenty of resting up while I recover, but I have all the past 2 months of messages to catch up on. Also, with the house having been "run" by a very caring, but totally undomesticated hubby for the past 6 months, and having had a teenage son living here alone while we've been away for 5 weeks, well, need I say more? I'll need you all more than ever, just to keep balanced.

I'm so so grateful, that you all inspired me to be clutter free, while I could still do some things. It has been probably one of the biggest helps in these months, having no unnecessary stuff to deal with. Also, I know, even while I'll still be limited for some weeks ahead, that I can cope, because of that.

We only arrived home this morning, and once, I'd have been overwhelmed by having to deal with "normal" life again, while still getting over spinal surgery, but just the thought of this forum is the best tonic of all. Thank you everyone for your humour, your care, for all you share, and for keeping me going through the past months.

I've been thinking of you all over there in the United States with the scary economic stuff going on, and hoping you're all coping with however it is affecting you.

Now i just have to put into practice all the good ideas I learnt on here.... can't wait.

Sue, that is a very valid point and I agree completely that it is extremely important for a woman to have the means to provide for herself should something happen, whether it be divorce, death, incapacitation, or something else. As everyone knows, there simply is no way to guarantee everything, so you can never completely protect yourself from all contingencies, but it is very unwise to simply trust in the fates (or whatever) to see you through. It is imperative to have some sort of plan in mind for securing an income should something happen. My parents were adamant about all of us kids getting an education, regardless of career plans. I'm very glad about that. I had a degree when I was married to my first husband but didn't use it. I worked part-time managing a clothing store, a fun but low-paying job. When it became apparent that I had to get out of my marriage, I realized that my husband would make it extremely difficult, would do whatever he could to avoid paying anything, and that my job would never provide for my family. So, I stayed married an extra year and a half while I got another degree with better income potential and a teaching credential. It was somewhat underhanded but it was literally my life and the well being of my children at stake. I had a good job when I was finally able to get out of my marriage. It was still very tough. When I remarried (stayed single for 15 years by choice), I wished to retain my own accounts and my name. I have good insurance should anything happen to dh, a good prenup that sees to my needs and those of my children from my first marriage, and also protects dh's property for him and our children together. Sure, no one thinks divorce will happen to them, but it CAN happen. Even if your feelings never change, you cannot guarantee your partner's feelings. It also is not a sign that you don't trust the person to simply get a legal definition of what belongs to whom and protect it. I have a lot of autonomy with financial matters as I kept my own accounts, separate from dh. We have a system for paying bills that works well for us and provides me some security with how the money is disbursed. There is a whole area of finances that I have no clue about, but it is dh's trust fund and not my money unless he puts it into joint tenancy areas, such as the house, family purchases, etc. The same is true for me. I put the money from the sale of my house into an account that has nothing to do with dh, and he does not feel he needs to know what I do or don't do with it. I have insurance to cover death or disability so I wouldn't be compelled to sell the house or immediately find a job. I have a nest egg to see me through as well. When we married, I chose to take my dh's name because I liked our family all having the same last name. However, I studied the options carefully and found that if I added my own last name as a second middle name, it gave me the flexibility of using that sometimes, too. There is no legal way to have both last names as last names without using both, if you know what I mean. If you're Cheri Jones Smith, you can't sometimes go by Jones and sometimes Smith, you always have to be Jones Smith. I wanted to be able to use one for some things and one for another. For instance, I liked using my "own" last name for work and on my credit cards. I didn't want a hyphenated name nor did I want a double last name, so using my own last name as a second middle name suited me well. On documents, including my ID, it looks like two last names, which allows me to use my maiden name when I choose, but also gives me my husband's name as my legal last name so when you look me up somewhere, you can find me. Do you know what I mean? Say my maiden name was Jones and my married name was Smith. I am Cheri Ann Jones Smith on my ID. My first name is Cheri, my middle name is Ann Jones, and my last name is Smith. If my legal last name was Jones Smith, you would have to look me up under Jones and I would have to use both when signing checks, etc. I don't know that keeping my credit cards in my maiden name is exactly legal, but no one has ever questioned it. They simply look at my ID and say ok. Sorry for that long ramble! But yes, it's very important to have backup plans in anything you do. You just never know. I have the advantage of age and experience; a young woman would likely have much less protection than I, and I would urge that she get a good education or job certification in a field that would allow her to find a job if the need arose.

Ah, a baby. I can't advise you, but I can tell you our story. We bought our old house when our first child was 1 and a half. The ensuing year we had the inestimable luxury of living elsewhere rent-free while we did substantial work on the main floor - removed plaster and lath (sorry purists, but it was crumbling), new kitchen, plumbing, and electrical throughout, floor refinishing. To the point of having the house functional and basically presentable. Cosmetics and finishing, I assumed, would be picked away at after we moved in, over the next few years. My husband appeared to assume the opposite. His usual hobbies having languished for a year (anything with wheels), he applied himself to them with renewed vigour, all the more so when child #2 was born after we were in the house. Meanwhile, half-wallpapered walls, doors without moulding and missing baseboards (all in the basement waiting to be stripped) mocked me as your hold in the wall mocks you. I fixated on getting the work done, he resisted, and it was something we fought about far too often over the years. Yes, this is the story of a marriage and a family as much as it is of a house. We HAVE done a lot (kids are 21 and 17). New porches front and back, lots of painting inside and out, much of the woodwork, and small projects too numerous to mention. Lots of landscaping too. Wired the upstairs. And maintenance - a real headache when to have to already re-do some things when many things are not yet done the first time! Pragmatic stuff. New sewer cleanout in yard. Fixed basement flooding problem. New roof. Some new windows. But the house is not yet done. With the privilege of hindsight, I think the following. Even if we had applied ourselves harmoniously and earnestly to the house, it would probably not be finished, and even if it were, we would have made our lives complicated in other ways (there were issues). And the kids would have suffered if less attention had been available for them. As it was, the house always took a back seat to what the family needed - our issues have been largely tamed and the kids are fine. And this is how it should be. But I never understood that. I woke up every morning with "finish the house" at the top of my to-do list, and ended every day frustrated that we had not gotten to it. OK, that's an overstatement, but the point is, I let it eat away at me for what were the best years of our lives as a family and it would have been much healthier for me to just say "it doesn't matter today - we'll do it when we can." I will say that even if I had changed my expectations, we could have managed things better. One regret I do have is that the house got kind of cramped at one point, and we probably should have moved. But the house was "half done" and it never felt ready to put on the market (and I don't mean it only had a hole in one wall. I mean rooms half painted, no baseboards, etc). So we felt "stuck" and now the window of opportunity (one child moved out, prices vs. future earning power ratio not so good) have sort of passed, and the logic of moving is gone - until we downsize rather than upsize. On the other hand, if we had not started big projects, such as removing all the woodwork for stripping, we never would have gotten them done either. Welcome home! When things get really bad, and your situation does sound "bad", just "get by" by concentrating on "The Three D's" Dinner, dishes, and duds. If you feel up to it, don't worry about the "clutter" part. Just make sure you and your family eat well, clean up the kitchen after every meal, and keep up with laundry. Hope your neck feels better and better by the day. If you are still in pain or weak, just make lists for what to do when you're well enough. And don't obsess about the clutter. It will "keep". Oh, and get well fast. Make sure you get enough sleep. That's number one, even before The Three D's!!!

Best wishes to you Lily, along with a speedy recovery. I'm sure it helps when you look back to see how you preplanned for this time...and knowing all you have to focus on at the moment is healing. When you start to feel up to something, just remember to take it in 5 minute increments. You can make it longer as you feel better, which I hope will be very soon!

Oh, Thanks everyone. I'll be honest. After all my spruiking yesterday about not being overwhelmed, I woke up this morning, got out of bed, and just burst into tears. The house is fine really, but just looking at all the unpacking of 5 weeks, the hospital gear, the bookwork to catch up on for our business, the medical paperwork, the washing to be done, the groceries to get...
Waaagh,,, I had a bit of a sook, and thought how nice it would be to go have a shower in a bathroom that is sterile, and come back to pristine white sheets made by the nurses with hospital corners, and have my chosen meals brought in on a tray!! Anyway reading your posts got me off the pity potty in a hurry, and how could i ever want to go back in hospital again? Yikes.
DH and I tackled the paperwork yesterday, because I could do that lying in bed, so at least we know the bills are up to date, our banking and mail are sorted, and that's a good feeling.
I loved your three D's Jannie... dinner,dishes, duds.
That got my priorities sorted. Good food, no scummy sink, and clean undies and pj's. Who needs more than that for a few weeks, and I can cope with that.
DH is great when it comes to mowing, and sweeping and carrying etc, so I'm really lucky. He keeps reassuring me that we'll get to the rest little by little. I'm just such a fusspot that even a messy bed gets me down, even when I know it doesn't matter at a time like this.
Thanks again for all your encouragement, and yes, 5 minutes at a time, I know. I need a neon sign in my brain flashing that at me all the time.

Lily, glad you are on the mend. Take your time and don't do to much. You have a DH that is helping and that is always a good thing.

Well Lily it's certainly apparent that you not only have your head screwed on, I hope straight, but you have a sense of humor as well. That's always a good thing to help with recovery I'm told. And from personal experience I believe it's very true. So when you have the down times like you've already experienced, and you will have more, get out your favorite CD and play your favorite uplifting song. Over and over if you have to. And sing along to it at the top of your lungs. Well as long as that isn't harmful to you. If that doesn't work then watch a funny movie, read some funny jokes. You can always find lots of funny stuff on Reader's Digest. I'll link you below. And most of all, remember we're here for you. So give it to us! We can take it. We're women, Mom's gramma's and can handle anything together.

Yes Becky, thankfully they left my sense of humour intact, and before I had surgery, when I had to lie in bed most of the time, and I wasn't up to even reading sometimes, funny old TV comedy sketches kept me sane, or insane, whichever way you prefer to look at it. Also this forum.
I actually wrote out a list of the things that were said on here that made me chuckle out loud. I'll put them in a post one day soon. Perhaps that can be my "thankyou" tribute, as I think everyone would enjoy them.
