IMO...the commercial is silly and I don't like it.

OTOH...I have a couple smallish teddy bears, a Chicago Cub bear from Wrigley field and a silver Y2K Happy New Year bear.
I wouldn't mind another bear, but I do prefer fresh, long stemmed roses.

The tall crystal vase has been washed and is ready for Saturday :)

I do not want a "stuffed" anything...unless it's a turkey or lobster!

The best Valentine's gift I ever received was a bare-root "Antique Tapestry" miniature rose. Wes left it, in all its dead-looking glory, on the dining table before he left for work one V-Day while we were in California. It grew to about 4'tall and was covered in lovely blooms for about 10 months out of each year.

I cried when I had to leave it when we moved to ND in the dead of winter.

Given my druthers I would like to have something more practical. The bears are cute but I don't need them since our bed is already crowded at night with live furry critters. Roses don't last and I have a cat that likes to garden. A new blouse or sweat shirt sure would be nice as mine are really showing their years. Our microwave oven gave up the ghost and had to be pitched. Leaving this thread open as a hint to my DH!

I would not want one for myself, but DH & I have made it a tradition to send one to each new grandbaby..... with a bib with their name on it. Very cute.

I can't stand 'stuff' like that either. If you look around at thrift stores or garage sales, you'll find a lot of other people trying to get rid of that junk too.

What ever happened to practical gifts?

I buy practical stuff for myself...impractical gifts are more fun.

I just reminded Jerry I don't want a pjgram, and at the time also indicated my dislike of the teddies. :)

I did however let him know which kind of chocolate I would prefer, and where he could find it. :)

I thought the same thing when I saw that commercial, Kath. I wonder how many guys will order one thinking they are getting the best gift.

All I could think of is it being another dust collector. Bob and I aren't getting anything for each other. I am going to make some brownies, but if I was to get something I would like it to be a gift certificate to Michael's, Hobby Lobby or a scrapbook store. I would accept cash too... :)

I don't think a stuffed toy is anything romantic. I'd rather get flowers or jewelry or even a heart-shaped box of candy.

I've been embarrassed to admit that I think the "typical" Valentine's Day stuff is stupid. I almost hate this "holiday". I think DH feels like he is supposed to buy me a heart shaped box of chocolates, Mylar balloon, and flowers with yet another white bear with a red bow.
I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but I REALLY don't want that stuff. DH thinks I'm just trying to let him "off the hook" so I get it anyway. He's my sweetheart, I love him. I just don't like Valentines Day.

My Dh knows better than to buy me any of the typical Valentine's Day stuff, LOL. I do NOT want stuffed animals or chocolates, and certainly not balloons. No jewelry either.

I enjoy a sappy, pretty card, especially if it's a blank card, and he writes the message. That's the best gift of all.

After enough years, teddy bears/candy don't mean much. Flowers are always nice, though. Dinner out would be nice, except there aren't any really nice places nearby..and I would have to pay for it. Forget that.

DH and I exchange cards..usually two each, one silly and one mushy, and I might tuck a tiny box of candy somewhere unexpected for him. He has a sweet tooth, I don't.

Though I don't want one, I think the bears are nice for the 'younger' crowd of teens or preteens. I think they are especially nice in that they are made right here in the USA and are providing valuable employment to those who need it.

I think buying USA made items right now is very important.

I do however think the commercial would be much better if it was geared toward a sweet little girl receiving a 'special' bear on Valentine's Day.

I just priced them--the "bandit" bear is $69.95 and the lover boy is $79.95. They are 15" tall. Pretty expensive "toy", huh? Plus shipping!!

Heck, I'd be happy to get a teddy bear, candy, flowers, fabric or anything else DH came up with! He's never been much of a gift giver.

I told DH last night that I don't want flowers this year. I told him I'd rather have CASH... I'm booked on a cruise with two friends for January 2010, and I've started a cruise fund!

I'm with most of ou, I don't want a teddy bear and I don't want money wasted on flowers. I want your time, honey, I want to just kick back, relax and sepnd some time with the guy I love...no gifts required!

I don't want candy- I am supposed to be weaning off sugar as it is. I work for a rose nursery, please, DO NOT SEND ME ROSES! I don't really have a good place to put a floral arraingement, any one left on the counter gets eaten by one of my cats. I have enough stuffed toys. Told DH to just give me a gift certificate for my favorite cross stitch place if he feels a need to give me something. I will give him a card and a nice dinner!

My husband and I are in agreement that Valentine's Day is just a huge marketing ploy. If your "special someone" truly loves you, and you truly love your "special someone," then you shouldn't need a designated day to do something nice, thoughtful, and/or romantic for that person. In fact, if you (or your "special someone") only do something really nice, thoughtful, and/or romantic for each other once a year - on or near February 14 - then I would question the sincerity of it.

There are two days each year when restaurants set up extra tables/chairs. They do it in such a way so that the average person can't tell that the restaurant isn't normally that crowded. They do it so that they can cram in more people and make a bigger profit because they know that folks want to dine out on those two days. (No, Easter and Christmas are the two days when folks who don't normally go to church decide that they will finally attend a service.) The two days that are super crowded in restaurants are Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. I'm not a mother so that day's clear, and the last time hubs and I went out for dinner on February 14 was in 1982, and we swore "never again!"

I'm lucky in that my hubs is super romantic. He plans surprise trips for me that are incredible. He brings me breakfast in bed, he's been known to greet me at the end of the work day with a single long-stemmed rose; or has a dozen roses or a dozen Shari's Berries (chocoate dipped strawberries) delivered to my office - timed perfectly to be placed on my desk when I'm away from it so they're sitting there as a total suprise when I return....
