I finally found a farmer's market!

and it was nice. Very small, only five tents. One with pasta and cheeses. I got some Grana Padano, One with vegetables. I couldn't carry the yellow cauliflower or the lima, soy and cranberry beans. No more room in my arms for tomatoes or three kinds of squash, but I made a nice haul with shallots, golden beets, candy stripe beets, yellow and purple baby carrots, poblanos, there was a pickle tent, a soap tent and a bakery and fruit tent. they also had preserves (but who needs theirs, LOL!) and cider. I got some apple cider donuts that were really good!

Dinner tonight is grilled chicken and fresh corn!

WOW...you did great. I've not seen purple carrots here but will look for them now. Next week is the final week for one of our farmers markets and I have to make sure that I get there early.

Friday night was our last market, the rain held off, it wasn't really cold (til the end), but not many people there (vendors or customers). This despite last week's market being canceled due to rain. I had *beautiful* crisp green bell peppers, estimated could hold about 3/4C - 1C of stuffing so picked them, only sold TWO (and 6 bananas, a few jals and cherry bombs, and those were to a single guy who buys $2 worth from me every week)! One lady told me the bells were small, she was used to grocery store peppers. I told her I thought these were good-sized, refrained from saying that the grocery store peppers weren't (for the most part) organically grown, were probably waxed, and a week or more old, not 5 hrs old (I picked in the AM)! But the same lady thought $6 for a jar of jam was too much, I did tell her then that I could sell wild blackberries for $5/pint in season, so had to charge $1 extra for the jar, sugar, etc. to make the jam. Sorry for the rambling - had to vent. I guess I have lots of peppers to freeze, pickle, and make jam/jelly from (I did manage to sell 3 jars of pepper jelly and 1 fruit jam - bad night, I usually sell more). Plus tomatoes - another lady thought $3 for a 14oz (average) Pink Brandywine was too much, no one else even asked. Guy next to me was selling smaller heirloom-looking (squatty) ones, don't know how he did but still had lots left when he packed up. But I *have* been asked to supply the preserves for the Historical Society's Tavern night. Maybe make some pickled peppers? I'll start a new thread.

Melissa, With water bath items, you might be able to sell certain jams and jellies but I am not sure about pickles because of the pH issues and because a lot of people make pickles using techniques no longer considered safe by the USDA, so they may be more regulated than they used to be. I don't know about salsas either, even those most of them are water-bathed. There are very few other veggies that can be water bathed any more because those techniques are no longer approved by the USDA for those veggies. The whole issue with home-canned products is that no one (and by no one I mean the government agencies that regulate such things) knows how you're making them, and that kind of process isn't tolerated very well by today's governmental bodies. They want to regulate everything that everyone does. I know that there are some people who sell home-canned goods in other states because they talk about doing it, and some are doing it illegally and know that they are but intend to do it until they get caught. There's a lot of other folks who checked into doing it and decided that the cost of meeting all the government rules and regulations would wipe out any potential profit, especially if they had to rent a certified/inspected kitchen. In Texas, last year, a very popular restaurant started a little farmer's market in their parking lot. Everything was fine because the government groups that regulate such things really didn't realize they were there. However, it became very popular very quickly and the government came in and told them to shut it down because neither the market nor vendors were licensed/approved/certified as required by state law. Just because they were doing it without governmental approval didn't mean it was OK to do it. That was a very sad situation because everyone involved in it was having fun and had total faith in the safety of the products offered there, but that doesn't matter to government regulators. Soapbox here - Tomatoes grown in hoop houses (or green houses, hot houses) or grown hydroponically can easily be ready in June and can be considered locally grown. Perfectly shaped because they can be manipulated sun-wise with grow lights to get the right light all they way around - different than open field grown, and are bug/virus/critter free. Why they are not quite ripe depends on when they are picked. If a Market is on Saturday they have to be picked Wed to Fri. If they are perfectly ripe on Tuesday they will be mush on Saturday. I have also watched people pick up every single fresh tomato of 200 or so on a table, turn each one over, inspect it, put it down, then walk away. Figure 100 people doing that per hour and that poor ripe tomato is mush. Under ripe are sturdier. Just saying. On the subject of "perfect" - a question I'd like to put to my customers who want their piece of pie "perfect" I should ask (but I am too polite) - "Are you going to photograph it or eat it"? Homemade is not picture perfect because a machine didn't make it!!!!! Same for produce. A few shot holes in beet greens do not make them less tasty, a wriggly carrot might just be a lot sweeter than a perfectly straight one, an asymmetrical potato grown in a field 10 miles away tastes better than a perfect one shipped from Idaho 2,000 miles away and chemically treated to not sprout so you get to eat that stuff too. As for "locally grown", please ask the farmer where his/her farm is. But, 75 miles is acceptable for my Market which means my 7B can easily be almost zone 8 and a full four weeks earlier in warmth then here! It's OK for me. Ask if you could visit their farm, to drive-by, not inspect. Ask the Market Manager if they visit their vendor's farms to verify where the produce they offer comes from. If they don't it means that the Market is a free-for-all. Produce could be shipped in from China or Brazil or Mexico - not local but selling locally. We have a State Farmers Market and before it opens the sales people line up in the way back to buy bushels of produce that were grown all over the State - mostly by high production commercial farms, not mom and pop ones. Those behind the table taking your money may never have set foot on a farm - they are just employees and what they offer is exactly the same as what the grocery store offers, they get it from the same commercial farms. So, local is relative - it only means from the State of NC to that Market here. If you find a local Market vendor who is the farmer (as my Market verifies) then bypass the grocery store with the perfect-perfect produce and buy the slightly imperfect from your Market. We can't grow rhubarb, lemons, or bananas in NC. If your Market has vendors offering things that don't grow in your State, then go to the grocery store. Donna - I am with you. Importing food and eliminating local farming with the lost knowledge of how-to farm puts our food supply at risk, just like Venezuela. 80% of small farms have disappeared. I support the farm vendors at my Market for their small local farm products whose prices are higher than the grocery store.

I can find guanabana in the local markets here, but it's nice to find already made into a licuado. When I do find it, I freeze it into a sorbet or make it into ice cream. Mamey ice cream is becoming more common here, and so I don't have to go to East L.A. to find it. My white sapote tree has flowers on it now, but from what I've read, I won't get fruit until about six months from now. I should be getting quite a bit of fruit from it when I do, however, and I'll have to freeze some of that as well. I'll be getting cherimoya fruit by January. My papaya trees are doing well also, but it will probably be another two years before I get from from them, and still there is no guarantee. I have four of them clustered together, and I will have to have both male and female trees to get fruit. I have one large avocado on my avocado tree (which I got recently), and I'm hoping to get more than that next year. There are several avocado trees in this neighborhood, and so I don't have to worry about mine getting pollinated. People bring guayabas to work to give away free, and I will eat some of them, but they really have too many seeds - much like pomegranates. I used to have a guayaba tree, and I only made juice from the fruit. Incidentally, white sapote is not tropical and can handle temperatures as cold as 26°F. There is another farmers' market here in Westchester on Wednesday, and I plan to go to that one to get tomatoes, as I forgot to get them in Mar Vista yesterday. The Wednesday Westchester market is very small, but it is good for vegetables and the more common fruits. I was unaware that some farmers' markets did not sell in November. It's a big month here for produce, and the markets are open all winter as well, to sell winter vegetables. Lettuce is cheaper here in the winter than in the summer.

and THIS is the place in your backyard, that you and your friend just found? GOOD job!!! we are corn snobs and have had some incredible "silver king" over the last couple of weeks from a small farm just down the road. i've checked twice in the past 3 days and his sign isn't up and i'm afraid the season might be done :( but it was wonderful and i sure hope your corn is as good as ours has been!

My favorite place to shop (next to the hardware store). We are fortunate to have two year round farmers markets. I spent the morning at the one near my home yesterday, my daughter is a vendor ... she sells handmade chocolates :) They even had a string quartet playing old-time folk songs.

Lucky, Kathleen, you have many markets at your disposal. I haven't been out east in a while and the way it's going, we're going to have to wait until spring!

yes, San, this is the place. Was a lot of fun. Wish I found it sooner, the corn was fantastic, best I've had. Can't remember the name but it was not Silver King.

Terri, there's one last donut left, hopefully for my morning coffee but highly doubtful :)

earthlydelights, LOL, a granny cart would have been perfect, but I have no room in my frig for it all!

I microwaved the cauliflower and the water turned a beautiful shade of purple, then I sauted it with some orange tomatoes. It was good. Cool color. Tomorrow I'll make some carrots. It'll be some very colorful dinners the next few nights!

Carol, that's a great haul, my corn is all done, as is any local corn around here. I grew the purple carrots last year, I think mine were called Dragon Tongue, all I could think of was that mouthwash commercial where the guy has "dragon breath", LOL, but the carrots were good.

I haven't seen the purple cauliflower here, does it just taste like white cauliflower? And are those grapes in that green container?

Kathleen, handmade chocolates? That sounds as good as fresh beets and I love beets...

Annie, the purple tasted the same as the white to me. but the color was so pretty, should have gotten the yellow, too! Sort of like Mardi Gras cauliflowers! Yes, the guy said they were concord grapes. I thought they'd be sweet. I was wrong. Really tart. and seeds. No one here liked them!

Carol, Concords are great for wine or jelly, but not much for eating grapes. Quick, make a batch of grape jam!

OK, so the cauliflower tasted the same, but looked pretty. It matched the carrots!

Too late, Annie. I never thought of jelly. My friend roasted her bunches of carrots and loved them. So tomorrow I'll roast the beets and the carrots. Didn't get to it tonight for dinner!

Concord grapes are grown here in NE Ohio. I love them when they are deep purple, to me they are sweet. DH doesn't like dealing with seeds, these are the grapes my Mom bought when I was young and I use to have to drive out to the country to find when I got grown. Now they are available at the market along with those little purple plums. I bought both this weekend :)

ohiomom, I thought they would be sweet. Larry doesn't like seeds. I didn't mind the seeds but I didn't like the "pucker" and they weren't a deep dark purple, these weren't sweet at all. Disappointed, but next time I find them, I'll do like Annie said and make jam :)

I planted seedless Concord grapes but only got a few this year, it's the first harvest. I like the sweet middle with the sour skin, but many people don't. It's funny, though, it's nearly impossible to find Concord grapes around here and when I do, they are extremely expensive.
