What a fun thread. We bought our 1915 Craftsman last summer and it is slowly being renovated back to its original splendor. It's a slow process especially when you do most of it yourself

You've got a Dutch Colonial Revival. The gambrel (barn-like) roof is the most prominent feature of that style of home. Very nice house!

This is a really neat thread...and elljays...that's not an old house...that's an old MANSION!! That is HUGE!! What a lovely home!

Thanks, Sarah! It's really not as big as it looks. It's about 3200 sq. ft., which is much bigger than what we had before, but certainly not huge compared to a lot of the houses being built around here now, or compared to a lot of the other older homes around here. It just looks big from the road. The yard on the other hand, really is as big as it looks...it's a lot of mowing!

Both houses were built by the same person for his daughters in 1921. As you can see, the PO's of ours added some un-lovely aluminum siding, as well as a front foyer addition that is much too wide.

Ah well, at least it's tinyness means that all improvements are in financial reach at some point.

Thanks! I opened an account and read how to do it. Here is the front of our house from July. We've been working on it for almost two years now. It had been turned into five apartments about 50 years ago and in terrible condition when we bought it. We are returning it to a single family home for ourselves. We had a lot of damage from Katrina, but thank goodness we did not flood. The French Quarter is on some of the highest ground in New Orleans and is actually above sea level. I hope to be in before 2007, but not holding my breath!

Julie : Love your house ! We lived on the corner of Chartres and Esplanade, just up from Port of Call when we were first married. My brother has lived for years on the corner of Royal and Canal on the second floor. He has just let it go- post Katrina _ due to family and job issues. I am so glad you are able to be there and cont. your home reno. We are incorporating the Vieux Carre' design for our back terrace....when we finiish this kitchen !! Ours is a 1850's farmhouse. No expense spared! It was originally brick, and was stuccoed ... mid 60's?

---now THAT is a style i love, Lil Geek. Simple, early, and with no gothic peak added. I'd swear you were in Prince Edward county, Ontario. Very typical of houses out there.

Bath is a beautiful old area. We want to live on Amherst Island someday. Try to get your hands on a copy of "The Settlers' Dream" book--maybe through the library or historical society. It is all about the early architecture of Prince Edward County--you will recognize the similarities to your own house. Here's my current house-it is beside the log house we are building. PS--hey All--Notice the For Sale Sign......?! Circa 1910.

Here is a clickable thumbnail of my brick 1910 bungalow-esque home. Much of the interior painting still remains to be done (after 8 years) but due to lack of funds, I call this house a work in progress, still. But it has lots of space for me and is solidly built, 9 ft. ceilings, acres of original oak floors, and a kind of simple charm.

When I bought the house in 1998, I had to remodel the kitchen and bathroom, plus put in all new plumbing. The original T-model size brick detached garage is still standing and in good shape.

Our street is adjacent to the historical district and there is a Catholic school now in my old elementary school just down the block. Who says you can't go home again? LOL

Cool thread - I ADORE old houses!

Here's mine - a {{gwi:244588}}.

I've owned it for almost 17 years. We've finally started rehabbing the inside (the ex's crummy idea of a kitchen remodel aside, which he never finished 15 years ago). We're nearing completion on a new kitchen (my goal was to be as sensitive as we could afford to be to the house style), and some old pics of the rest of the interior can be found at this link.

I plan to take new photos of the interior after I've cleaned up the incredible kitchen remodelling mess and the dining room is no longer remodel storage/refinishing workroom.

I'm bumping this up to the top, to encourage newer people to post pictures of their old houses. The last post here was Sept. 11, '06, so we've had seven months' worth of newbies since then.

Okay, how about the house I WANT to buy--just about a block from our current house. It's a HUGE project, top to bottom renovation, tearing off the old addition and replacing it with something bigger. But I LOVE it....LOL

Here is our 1917 Foursquare House. We bought the house in 2001. We are currently remodeling the kitchen (the real estate ad stated that kitchen and bath were updated... yeah... updated in 1950 ha ha)!! Anyway... we absolutely love our house.

Much cursing and spitting on the ground occurs when we talk about the people who stuccoed the house. We won't even mention the unspeakablely evil previous home owners who divided the house into a duplex.

Happily, we just discovered an original porch post under the stucco, so we have a document piece to use to replicate the porch. Happy happy joy joy.

What a fabulous old photo Hunzi! Do you know if there were 'issues' with the brick or if the owners just wanted a different look? I guess it would be a huge and costly job to remove the stucco. It's still a wonderful house and must be great inside as well. Oh, to be able to travel back in time and have a good look when all of these were new!

Hunzi, wow that's great you found an old photo of your house, how cool is that! I'm looking for an old one of my 1885 farmhouse to figure out what kind of windows to put in. 6/1 or 1/1 double hung. The previous owner put in 1980's big bay picture windows, UGGGGH! I'll try to get a picture up, but with the windows it's hard to tell what style it is...

blufish: We really think that someone was just after a "new look" for that "musty old Victorian". We think the stucco happened when some other updates occured in 1925, so the bricks might have been due a repointing and some mason talked them into the whole Spanish Revival thing.

We're not sure what it would take to remove the stucco, although I'm tempted almost daily to just go outside and start whacking on the house with a hammer. My hope is after the Powerball fairies bless us that we can either remove all the stucco and restore the bricks or remove all the stucco and reface with a thin brick.

mom2lilenj: Good luck on the windows! We've been fairly lucky with the windows. It's clear that most of ours are original 1/1 double hung. There are 3 that were removed in the back of the house, 2 were replaced with metal casement windows (painted shut of course) and the 3rd was replaced with the current back door. A PO also enclosed the side porch and converted it into a bedroom, adding a couple of other windows. All the new windows were either added at the time of the stucco or afterwards. Every last "new" window has suffered severe water damage at the sills and we're going to be hard at work trying to repair them this summer.

Oh the joys of old houses!

On the fun front, we've discovered one of the original porch posts under the stucco, (after a large chunk of stucco fell off!) did a bit more exploring and found some paint shadows where the circle trim used to be. That gave us some measurements, so we were able to acertain that most of our stucco columns are located where the original porch posts were, so we're hoping we'll find most of our original porch posts are just hidden under there.

I've just emailed the old house photo to a wood working shop to get quotes on replacing all the fancy trim. Cross fingers and I'll have a proper porch again one day!

Here is our 1890 Victorian Bungalow in Alabama. We are completely finished with the inside and I am now redoing all the rear landscaping. We had the attic converted right after we moved in in 2001-2002. We just had the kitchen/mastersuite/sunroom/pool entrance areas done in 2006.

I just got here...is it too late, or is everyone willing to look? Here's our home, parts of it were built in 1842, some in 1895 and some in between. Our neighborhood consists of homes built in the '50's that were built when the farm property was sub divided. A few of the neighboring properties hvae bits and pieces of foundation from barns, out buildings and even a silo!

These photos were taken 3 years ago when we bought the house. Since then, we have made few visible changes, just those behind the scenes things to make sure things will stay just as they are for a few more generations.

here's ours the day we made an offer. 1910 or thereabouts. As near as we can tell it's a stick victorian? Courthouse and abstract don't show when the house was built.

Previous owner replaced windows, central h/a, and vinyl siding.

we've since put on a new roof, new wiring, plumbing, kitchen, DR, added bath, etc.

Always combating DUST from remodeling ;) Like many of the rest of you, we'll get to the outside landscaping eventually.

It has a large screened porch in the rear and fenced yard with old growth grass. Even the dogs can't kill it.

The house has everything we needed, except closets. Major bummer about old houses.

Here is a picture of my old house. It was built in 1923. My husband grew up in our house, so that makes us the 3rd owner. We bought it in 1980 and replaced the roof,wiring,plumbing, furnace, bathroom, rebuilt the side porch( behind weeping cherry- which we planted)
to make a long story short- we have replaced or repaired nearly everything and are almost finished with our DIY kitchen reno. I could use some of that unkillable grass:)
