Melting sugar - is there a trick?

I always end up overdoing it and burning the caramel. It becomes black and hard as a rock. I have tried it on top of the stove and in the microwave. As in, " place 1/2 cup sugar in a small heavy skillet and melt to a rich brown syrup. "

Is there a secret way of doing it?
