Company didn't show

I'm sorry this description is so long, but would appreciate your comments.

The last week of August I exchanged emails with a man saying we would like to have him & his friend for brunch during September if they could make it. Though they came in June for a couple of glasses of wine, this would be the first time to have a meal together. He responded saying they could make it on Sunday the 16th. I emailed back with the day & date in the subject line.

Come this last Sunday, they didn't show. About an hour and quarter after they should have arrived, I left him a phone message saying we had been expecting them. He called Monday evening, apologetic and chagrined. (He is charming, interesting and a good conversationalist.) I was somewhat friendly, but reminded him that he had set the date and that we missed seeing him. Then we received a hand-written note Wednesday saying he has always had a poor memory and was so sorry to miss the brunch.

Would you make another attempt to have them for a meal sometime in the future, or meet somewhere for a meal, or...?

I'm leaning toward waiting for a period of time (a month or two) then maybe suggesting a meal out somewhere.

BTW, the brunch was just the four of us & I had made everything. It didn't go to waste, however. New neighbors had moved in next door the day before (we had met a few times over the fence), so I marched over & asked them for lunch. We had a pleasant few hours. I did not tell the first invitee because I didn't want him to think he was off the hook just because someone else came.
