Storing shoes near point of use...

I have the majority of my shoes in my clothes closet in plastic boxes or the boxes they came in. The shoes that I use often end up being under my computer desk, as that is where I change shoes. I tried having plastic shoe boxes there, but I don't return them to the boxes or have a number of pairs in one box. Still looks messy. I am talking about maybe 5 pairs of shoes at the most.

Shoes for gardening end up being left by the back door.

I would like to be able to provide an area so that the shoes could be left where I change them. I don't want them to look messy by just lying around on the floor.

What do you do? Any ideas would help.

you could get a big basket to corral them in.

I tried, for a while, to have a box w/ vertical cubbies to drop the shoes in (sort of like a wine box; I think I got a cardboard version of this and laid it flat on its back, and then dropped the shoes inside.

Talley sue...I am going to do something like the big basket...today when I was bringing donations into the shop I saw a basket made of metal for $5. which I think will work very well. If I don't use it for that, I can always use it for potted plants. I could even spray paint it if I would like.
While at the shop I saw two of my tops purchased! A good deal for someone.

Using electrical resistance to heat water is THE most expensive way to do it. You could afford to waste a lot of water waiting for it to come from a gas heater before coming anywhere near the cost of using alternative electric heaters. That goes for your dishwasher and clothes washer too. I also have units with internal heaters but we always run the hot water in the nearby sink to be sure that they're not heating stone cold water to run their cycles. "Our natural gas costs are also proposed to go up substantially in the near future so I'm not sure we actually save a whole lot using a gas heater vs. an electric heater" You don't say where you live, but where I am in Northern California, most of our electricity IS produced from natural gas. That will increasingly be the case nationally as coal is phased out so electricity prices will also increase as gas does too. No matter what happens to the price of natural gas, it'll always be cheaper to burn your own in a water heater than to use electricity. If you decide a recirculating system can work for you (are your hot water pipes accessible?), have it done so that the hot water runs in a circle to/from the water heater, not the kind that dumps "cold" hot water into a cold water pipe.

Thank you pipdog and chista :) Never even thought of Sur La Table as an option, nor Williams Sonoma. Great suggestions! Ikea and Bed Bath are right near me as you said, so I'll try them first. And just so you know, the Pasadena flea market is AWESOME! We bought two hand made mosaic patio chairs in the shapes of a face and a butterfly, (the actual wrought iron as well as the tiles), a small, mosaic sailboat table and a mosaic tile covered turtle my DH just weirdly fell in love with all for 75 bucks! It was the end of the day and we were able to "bundle". We bought the stuff before we even closed on the house LOL! Now they're sitting in our front courtyard area and all of our new neighbors come over and ask where we got them. A great bonus perk: conversation starters :) Wear really, really comfortable shoes and use the restrooms before you go through the gates. Bring water and lots of cash in small denominations. Don't be discouraged by the huge surrounding ring of common, new junk you could get at any street fair back in NY. There is a different, massive area of old collectibles and treasures. Large furniture selection wasn't all that, but the smaller stuff is great. Have fun and let me know what you found!

So...aside from the test paint pouches using *real* paint vs approximations, I love Devine for the low odor and the consistency. It's VERY thick, which means minimal dripping/splatter. I've used Behr, SW, the Kmart/Sears Martha Stewart line and there's no comparison for ME, which is why I'll pay more. Because while two coats deepens the color, I find one coat with touch-ups for patchy spots usually gives me results I like. So less paint used (aka less time spent) with less clean up. That said, the paints were developed for our rainy/grey PNW atmosphere (HEAVY cloud cover most of the time) and I've heard people say they're too "muddy." So it's not like it's a miracle paint, ha. Disclaimer: Colors appear differently on monitor; everyone's home takes color differently So many people love the Devine light neutrals, but I gravitate towards her medium/dark shades. Feather (sand) + Foam (deep aqua) Breeze Oak (looks soooo yellow tan on sample card!) Boopadaboo - I think I wore the same pair as rocky while traipsing through Disney - mine are ECCO soft 7. I purchased mine at Nordstrom Rack. The discontinued colors were 40% cheaper there. I almost returned them because they aren't as cushy as the shoes I usually wear. But I did wear them to Disney and after 10 miles of walking I had no blisters, no backache and no sore feet.

Could you hang a shoe bag under the desk or would that be awkward. I was thinking of even 1/2 a shoe bag. I never would have thought of cutting one of those down to size till I read of Talley Sue's idea for cutting them to fit.

Just thought of something else. Would you want to push your pretty metal basket in under out of sight, and then be able to pull it out again easily? You could put it on wheels, or one of those things they sit pot plants on the wheel around. That way you could just grab it with your toes, choose your shoes, and push it back under with your toes again? Just throwing ideas around.

lilydilly, I like the idea of the wheels on the basket. I was looking on-line this morning for storage for shoes and got the idea of a plastic bin on wheels. It wasn't as pretty as this one and was a whole lot more costly.
I think I will try it without wheels and like you said I could add one of the flower pot bases with wheels if I feel I need it.
I told myself I wasn't going to buy, just bring in...but this basket met me outside the store and it seemed just right, so I thought it would be silly not to buy it!

I have lots of sandals and don't have room to store them in plastic shoe boxes like I do my other shoes. I use a laundry basket that is kept in a corner next to my closet. It is tall enough so that they can't jump out and wander off!

If you have a wood floor and a metal basket, be careful not to mar the floor when you slide it around.

It looks like this basket will hold 3 pairs of shoes, max 4. The rest I put back in plastic boxes in my closet. I can see all the shoes without moving the basket out, so that works well. Looking better under my desk already!
