'I want in, I want out' doggie door help needed please

Our back door has ten square panes of glass, two across and five down. In front of that, we have a metal and screen (fiberglass screen over decorative metal pattern) security door. They are both hinged on the same side.

The dogs want in, the dogs want out. I'd love to have a doggie door but have no clue how to do it with both doors. The dogs would have to be able to exit and enter through both the security screen door and the back door itself.

I want to keep both doors because replacing doors can be pricey, and it's really nice to have the option of opening the back door for a breeze, and also having a locked security screen door during the summer--and still have the dogs able to come and go.

We'd also have to keep out the skunks and other critters that sometimes like to explore our neighborhood after hours, so we'd need some way to "lock" the doggie door. A collar on the dogs that emit a signal wouldn't work because of contact dermatitis we discovered they get from collars and such.

Put the "doggie Door" through the wall to the side of the door.

doggie doors have a lock ... you can lock it one way (they can go out or come in) or shut completely.
Aside from cutting the screen so it would move you could leave the screen open while dogs are able to use the door.
Just remember to lock that doggie door in the evening or you might just have those unwanted visitors.

I knew as soon as I seen this, that is was a neighbor issue, been there done that, I mentioned forsythia to you on another thread, but now that I see this I wanted to add that you ought to plant rose bushes in a row, the ones that have the largest thorns you can find, in case he tries to come any closer. we had a guy that lives diagonal from us that was standing outside of his door with a video camera, DH sees him while he was messing in the fridge (keep in mind we have a giant white pine tree, that is over our kitchen window) DH from the fridge, starts bobbing and weaving to try to see through the tree at this guy to see what he is doing and he jumped back in the house with the camera, now isn't that spooky? I hate to keep the sun out of my house, but I really think mini blinds are the best thing invented, and they are inexpensive.

I'm not sure why a local cabinet shop couldn't make what you want if you get the specs and do scaled drawings to review with them and refine the construction aspects. There's some similar things in the link here, but I didn't check into sizing. I'm not sure why the "concept" would be different for a cabinet maker. It looks like frameless construction, which I'm sure all shops are doing now. The only confusing thing for me is the toilet cabinet. Maybe it's designed to fit over the tank. Dunno. I had a similar problem with my MIL after the birth of our DS. But in retrospect I think a lot of it was my DH fault. MIL would call DH to let him know what her wishes were for our family during her visit and not wanting to rock the boat or maybe not knowing better he would agree. Then he'd tell me and I'd say no because.... Then he'd feel caught in the middle. I blamed her, she blamed me and DH was miserable. DH and I discussed it and he agreed not to agree to anything until we discussed it. It has made all the difference. That said she's still a strong force with her own ideas of how things should be. When she came to visit when he was 2 weeks old she told DH she would sleep on his bedroom floor to take care of him all night. DH thought that was a great idea so we could both get some sleep. NOT!!! Not sure what he was thinking anyway since I was breastfeeding. Huge fight! Also when I would let her hold DS she wouldn't give him back when he cried. So I had to go take him from her. Then the next time she held him and he started to cry she would literally run away from me so I couldn't take him. She'd even go outside of the house (IMO) so I couldn't hear him cry. She also camped outside of his room so when he woke from his nap she would be the one to get him up. At 4 months he'd scream everytime he saw her because like it or not she's not the one he wanted when he woke up from a nap. UGGGG I was very protective of him too (which I think is natural when they're young) and her behavior drove me crazy! Not to mention that she kept accidentally calling herself mom when she talked to him. Now he's two and he can spend as much time as he wants with her because now when he wants me he tells her "No, I want mama." And she tells him "Grandma is as good as mama" but he still runs to find me. :) Just a suggestion but as long as your DH is on your side can't you just be aloof and say "our lives are hectic and it's not a good time to visit the cabin" and leave it at that. I would never have thought you could get away with that but my husband does it all the time! And if they push he just gets a stern tone to his voice and say "It's just not a good time." You don't owe them any more of an explanation. Then let your dear husband take it from there if necessary. They really are his problem to deal with.

If you scroll further down in that linked thread, the details are there including pictures from the outside. . I am pasting the text from that thread , below, for a quick read. My box bay was built under a second floor overhang so no roof needed but a small roof would probably not add that much to the total cost. Another bonus of the box bay is that with the half screens, we can remove the banquette pillow and use the window seat for a staging area for food to be passed to the deck from the kitchen when we have a garden party. The half screens move up and allow access to the plates/trays, and then move down to protect the food and house from flies. It beats trying to walk out a closed patio door with both hands carrying a heavy tray. We also have used the box bay to temporarily stage the music speakers for parties. Of course nowadays that is moot due to bluetooth everywhere. I think you have lots of room to get by it on the exterior. You can put a bench of similar depth and width in that area on the outside of the house to gauge how it might affect your walkway. It cost slightly less than $5000 all told (including moving electrical and adding foam insulation under the exterior Azek cladding, tempered windows since I have all boys :) ), measures 78 inches wide internally by 18 inches deep. Much cheaper than adding a 40k breakfast room or an 80k large kitchen expansion as I first planned. I have a custom cushion for it now and my teen boys enjoy lounging and napping there. The key is to seat it low enough to the ground to make it comfortable for sitting (16" height). I also specified the weight that it had to be able to carry (600 lb). The style is known as a "box bay" and the brand is Sunrise windows. I purchased their premade "projected frame" window through their authorized contractor and he worked with me on the other details. My good friend and former nanny came by to visit the other day and barely noticed the kitchen renovation, she was so taken with the sitting bay. Exterior of original windows New box bay replacing old windows. Somehow those bay walls bring in a lot more light into the space. We also really like watching all the small wildlife outside that we could not reall see before. In terms of the layout, it gave us enough "breathing space" and sitting area... The light, animal/ibird watching, and perceived airiness is a huge bonus.

Thanks, all, for the advice. I was kinda hoping to not cut a hole in the wall--seems easier to just do doggie doors--resale value and all.

I thought the same thing, but got tired of the cold air leaking around the doggie door, and eventually broke down and bought one for the wall. It's really nice, and I built it into a nook bench so it's not even noticeable from inside at all. Of course if you have bigger dogs this may not work for you...
It was very easy to install and I love the look and function of it. I used the 'through the wall' door from Hale Pet Doors.

We have a 6' slider so we couldn't use a regular insert without having to "suck it in" to squeeze through, and there was no where for us to install the doggie door in the wall. We ended up putting it temporarily in the side door on the opposite end of the family room, but I still really want to switch it out for one of these:

What if your house is brick? I also have a rational fear of any kind of wildlife coming in (day or night) and a probably irrational fear of the Home Alone kind. That is where an intruder comes in...I don't have a small child to set booby traps but a dog who would probably greet them with some really wet kisses that would only scare off a germaphobe!

I had a dog when I lived in the country, where she could roam at will and we almost never locked our doors. Now that I live in a city, I own only cats, as it is just cruel to limit a dog to a city sized lot and a crate for when you are gone. My cats are strictly indoor, although I did have a tuxedo who liked walking on a leash--did that ever get some stares!

DH & I have whelped about 10 litters of basset hounds over the past 25-30 years, all while liviing in the city, with the last 27 being in the inner city. We also had an average of 6 adults for a lot of those years & none seemed paricularily troubled that they didn't have fields to run in. The majority were show champions & were quite content with the freedom a dog door allowed; one was a little retarded & we had to keep him crated if no one was home because he'd start fights but that had nothing to do with the lot. The yard had a lot of scars but our dogs have been known for their sweet temperments.

Sooz, when we lived in rental houses & couldn't cut into the landlords' doors, we always stored the original & bought a cheap, paintable hollowcore & put the dog door in that. When we bought our current old house, we wound up doing the same thing for our basement door & added a window to the top portion. I have only 2 dogs now but can't imagine not having a dog door.

The first time one of my dogs brought a possum in through a dog door was the last day that dog door was in operation.
NOT a fun day.
Now they are on a schedule determined by outdoor temperature and it works best for all of us.
I determine when they go in and out, not them :)

I have even had litter box doors for inside house cats.

Liter box in the basement, pet door in the basement door.
