OT - Do you know how someone could have gotten my email address?

You guys are always so helpful - I thought I'd ask here. I got an email from someone saying they'd read a post of mine on GW and wanted more information about what I'd purchased.

My email address is not accessible from my profile - so how could this person have gotten it?

I don't mind if it's legit - but could it also be some kind of phishing?

Go to member services at the bottom of the forum page.
Log in and go to edit (your information)
At the bottom of this page, in a colored box, you can tick recieve e-mail and choose whether or not your e-mail address is visible to anyone. Mine says 'none'
If you have no-e-mail set, I don't know how someone could send you an e-mail.

Thanks Judy. It's been set on "none" from the time I joined. I am baffled, to - so I hope some of the GW mavens who know more than I can help ...

Thanks Walt. I have tried that e-mail in proper format and can't get you. Mine is b_l_d@comcast.net. The gear pinions broken are briggs brand plastic gear pinions part #693059 now replaced with #695708. Today I bought another clutch and gear pinion but it's pouring rain in Mid TN and too wet to work on it. Without looking at it now. I'm having trouble understanding why the metal shaft going through the clutch and gear pinion (armature shaft?) would spin and the clutch and gear pinion will not spin while the gear pinion is engaged with the flywheel. It seems to work fine when plugs are removed. Im glad to hear about the OHV v flathead scenerio. Didn't really want to mess with valves, because it has been running good prior to this starter situation. One thing I might mention, coil was recently bad, and my neighbor drove this thing around without the engine cover on and running on one cylinder. I was not present the last tinme the gear pinion broke, but I believe the mower was running hot. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks to all who responded. Yes, my eye began slowly working it's way back to normal. After the first day, it had gone down to about half the size it was the night before, and was starting to show some response to light. By the second day, I was able to focus my eye again, and by the third, it seemed normal, if not still slightly sensitive to light. Those first 2 days I had to wear sunglasses even in the house because even the sunlight coming in the windows was painful. Definate lesson learned here, I think when working with these plants from now on, I will wear gardening gloves, as a precaution that I wont absently wipe or scratch my eyes, and be sure to wash thoughoughly upon coming back inside. Very scary indeed when you make a living as a freelance photographer and only have one good eye. (I was born with an abnormality of my left eye, looks perfectly normal but is basically just window dressing, can't do more than distinguish color and light with it) I couldn't imagine giving up our brugs, our yard is always vibrant with the colors of them, and on nights like last night, with literally thousands of open blooms, you realise why you do all that feeding and watering. We had a candlelight dinner and a movie on our lanai literally floating on clouds of the most wonderful perfume. Earlier in the evening just after dusk we were returning home with the windows open in the car and could literally smell our place before we arrived in front of the house. Appearantly the weather has just been on the perfect side for them this winter, as the trees are just bending under the weight of as many blossoms as they can possibly hold, with flushes coming one after the other. I haven't slowed my feeding scheduel yet, as it's been pretty much in the lower 80's still all the time, and have had to do quite a bit of pruning, both of side shoots and branches that are getting on the roof and in the gutters. So I should have plenty of cuttings if anybody wants them who didn't get some of the plants I had earlier, they went amazingley fast. Dave

Windows Vista Recovery is a fake computer analysis and optimization program that displays fake information in order to scare you into believing that there is an issue with your computer. Windows Vista Recovery is installed via Trojans that display false error messages and security warnings on the infected computer. These messages will state that there is something wrong with your computer's hard drive and then suggests that you download and install a program that can fix the problem. When you click on of these alerts, Windows Vista Recovery will automatically be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Once installed, Windows Vista Recovery will be configured to start automatically when you login to Windows. Once started, it will display numerous error messages when you attempt to launch programs or delete files. Windows Vista Recovery will then prompt you to scan your computer, which will then find a variety of errors that it states it cannot fix until you purchase the program. When you use the so-called defragment tool it will state that it needs to run in Safe Mode and then show a fake Safe Mode background that pretends to defrag your computer. As this program is a scam do not be scared into purchasing the program when you see its alerts. To further make it seem like your computer is not operating correctly, Windows Vista Recovery will also make it so that certain folders on your computer display no contents. When opening these folders, such as C:\Windows\System32\ or various drive letters, instead of seeing the normal list of files it will instead display a different folder's contents or make it appear as if the folder is empty. This is done to make it seem like there is corruption on your hard drive that is causing your files to not be displayed. You should follow the instructions in the link provided.. lkplatow - what a lovely and thoughtful gift. I am sure your MIL will be thrilled. You will be giving a gift that can be built upon not only by you, but now friends and other family members can purchase a charm or two for special occasions. Someone posted about the other brands of this bracelet being inferior as they aren't solid sterling (for the silver as opposed to the gold Pandora). While I am not sure about Trolls or Brighton, I did check out Kohl's silver version of this bracelet. and it is, in fact, solid sterling. The price point of the Individuality Bracelets and beads (Kohls)is a more affordable option for anyone who wants this type of bracelet in silver, but doesn't want to spend Pandora-type $$. As far as the durability of the glass beads - I've had mine for quite a few years and haven't yet had a glass bead break or chip. I have both Pandora and other brand glass beads. I am very hard on my jewelry, and don't remove it to wash dishes, etc. I like that you've chosen the sea turtle charm as one of the starter charms for your MIL's bracelet. Very thoughtful to personalize the bracelet with something you do together as a family. As a matter of personal choice, I think this type of bracelet is so much more versatile than the "Nomination" or stretchy charm bracelet that came out about 10 or so years ago. While I do have one of those, I never wore it as frequently as I wear my Pandora. For me, it is like comparing apples and oranges. Since I have accumulated many different colored glass beads, so I can make combinations of colored beads mixed with the other charms when I want to compliment a color I may be wearing. Personally, I don't like my bracelet full of charms, but prefer it only half filled. Happy Holidays!

FWIW, this happened to me once as well. I, too, was baffled, but assumed I missed some checkbox somewhere restricting it.

I wonder if it is available via photobucket or something? I haven't scoured there as I don't often post pictures.

Forward it to GW (use their "contact us" link). This happened to me three times last summer and the people at GW were v. interested in knowing about this and helping me.

I got a very similar email but ignored it. I wonder if it could be connected to a particular post we answered? I think it was about cabinet knobs but I'm not 100% sure.

Did they write what their GW name is? If they did, and they're around, you could ask.

Did the email begin by saying it originated from GardenWeb like this:
[This message originated at GardenWeb]

If so, they don't have your email unless you reply. GardenWeb does not divulge the email address in emails originating from them. They will show you the email of the person sending the email, but that's so you can reply if you want to.

OTOH, if it didn't have the originated from GW message, then they probably got it elsewhere. Have you ever sent anyone an email via GW?

Do you use the same user name on other, non-GW Forums? There is a bit of cross-over b/w GW and Forums like John Bridge, Stone Fabricators Alliance, IKEAFans, etc.

Just had a thought....

You have "None" selected.

But, is the box for
Allow other users to send you email via forms at our site.
checked? If so, then others can send you email; but, like I mentioned above, they won't see your email (b/c you selected "None") unless you reply.

If you don't want anyone to be able to contact you at all, you need to uncheck the email box. But, I think that also means you will not be notified when someone posts to a thread you started (assuming you checked the "Check here if you would like copies of follow-ups to your message emailed to you" box when you started the thread.)

Right now, you must not have the box checked b/c I don't see a link to send you an email...but has that always been set that way or did you just set it?

Hi there,

I just wanted to respond to this post since I emailed someone that didn't necessarily have their email address on gardenweb.

Sometimes when I search for certain things, like "white cabinets," a ton of posts with pictures of kitchens that do not necessarily appear in finished kitchens blog show up.

Many times these are pictures off of photobucket. In one particular instance, I went back to find those photobucket pictures to show my husband, and I simply searched in google "GW's screen name kitchen"

His or her email came up on google, and I emailed them asking if they minded sharing where they got their cabinets since they are local to Chicago, where I live.

I would not be offended if someone emailed me asking me that, and so I didn't think anyone else would be offended either.

Anyway, I just wanted to share how it is I came upon getting someone's email...actually quite unintendedly.

Wow - great things to check out. Buehl, I have never had the "allow" box checked for anything, nor have I emailed anyone. I don't really do any other forums.
The photobucket idea is possible, I guess. I'll have to check that out.
The email originated from an address other than GW. The sender did not use a GW name. It came from a realtor email address.
I suppose there is no harm is replying and asking where he got my address, but I really don't want to open myself up to a lot of spam, since I get none.

I got an email like that late last year, and I ignored it. It seemed like someone was fishing for information or trying to sell me something. I haven't had any more of them.
