My post of the day - Arghh I am a book hoarder!

Since I have my Kindle I have been buying tons of books on Amazon. When I say buying, I have bought a few but I have downloaded about 1300 in less than a year. I probably have only bought a couple dozen and the rest have been free. I frequent the sites that show the free books and grab them before they go up on price. I have read only about 30 of these books since the beginning of the year and have so many that I will never get to all of them. I feel like I am one big book hoarder. I put them into categories in collections. At least I am organized. I am truely addicted to adding to my collection.

Please tell me I am not the only book hoarder here!

NO you are not. You should see how many Religion Romance books I use to have. I tell people they are cheaper than a psychiatrist.

I am right there with you. I got my Kindle in November and have purchased exactly 2 books, but I have more than 900 books on it right now. And I have a couple of hundred more that I have collected but haven't loaded yet. I won't live long enough to read them all, but it sure is fun having all those choices.

anitamo I am glad you asked the questions you asked. Many of the things you ask can be answered by reading the links about Vipassana meditation and what it is and isn't. Your thoughts are not silenced so much as re-directed when they arise. You learn to focus your breathing on a point at the base of your nose on your upper lip area ...a spot the size of your fingertip. Breath normally...don't try to regulate your breathing. As you concentrate on the breath and the spot there will of course be thoughts that will arise..gently...smilingly let them go and refocus on the breath and the spot. This is why it is necessary to meditate for an hour. Some days it takes almost 1/2 or more of that hour to get the mind to settle. The reason people have repeat behaviors ...negative, addictive...whatever they are is because they don't have the patterning in their brain to waylay those thoughts and behaviors. Meditation allows you to get into that calm place that , over time, allows your brain to short circuit the behaviors and reactions that you want to change. There is a split second between the time something touches one of your 6 senses and you react. Meditation allows one to enter that split second and change the response. It is a simple and as complicated as that. This does not happen on a time table. Each person is different. You do really need the intense 10 day course to learn the entire technique. The part I told you about above is only the first 3 days of the course. It is a start though. Meditation is not secular...it is NOT related to any religion. it is a way of life. it is based on the 3 premise that I linked to above. Anyone can learn and anyone can practice and change the habit patterns of the mind. It is an experience that requires a very alert and sharp mind. it is not a passive practice. Sit up right and be alert and allow yourself an hour 2x a day. Set aside a place that is only for your meditation...a pattern will begin to form. Please feel free to email me and we can talk more. bnicebkind, I am sure you are suspect about my advice. However, I have an exact replica of OP's MIL. MIL is the most overbearing, rude, miserable, critical (and those are the nice descriptions) individual I know. I found that once I stopped taking her comments to heart and let it go in one ear and out the other (rather than engaging her and allowing her to make me feel insecure), I was able to straighten my back, listen to her comments, consider the source, respond politely and wait for her to leave. My MIL is a person who's thoughts never process in her brain, they come straight out of her mouth without thought that one or another comment may be offensive, hurtful, critical, etc. If you don't allow someone to hurt you, you take the power away from them. Fake it at first if you have to, and eventually you will actually feel it. I spent years crying to my husband when I would have to be in her presence and she belittled me. DH gave me good advice. Call her on it. When she says something that you don't like, tell her. I do now. I never raise my voice, I never get worked up, I just tell her straight up what I don't like. I do not let her ruffle my feathers. It works better to disagree with her in the moment and then there aren't residual feelings of hurt or insecurity. It actually works like a charm. The incidents are fewer and further between. I also realized that I did not want my husband to fight my battles and I certainly did not want my husband to insist his mother like me. If she doesn't like me, I no longer care. When I started realizing that my life was none of her business, I did have the backbone to tell her so when she asked an improper financial question or a question I felt was too personal. Everyone has to go with their own comfort zone. I hated that she got to me regularly. I was feeling insecure, which I hated since that is not me. MIL knew she was pushing my buttons and worse, I was letting her. I have now diffused her and she no longer has that power to aggravate, hurt or insult me. I posted about just taking a seat in another room rather than ruin the whole family dynamic. That is what I do. I don't want to be the cause of everyone not being able to celebrate a holiday together. If MIL has pi$$ed me off recently, I just say hello when I walk in and go on my way to a different room. Of course, we will have to sit at the same table for dinner, but there are usually other family members and actually, they all know how she is. It isn't just me she unleashes this behavior on. She is rude to everyone at times, including strangers in public. We joke in the family that she has Turrets. Who would be hurt if I refused to go to family functions that she was attending. My DD wouldn't see her cousins, I love my SIL and the other family members. Actually, I'd be spiting myself. When I came into DH family, the dynamic was different, I was younger. I soon had a baby with many health problems which were not expected. MIL found a place to be critical and be overbearing in the advice department. I finally just told her that I was following what my DD's doctors wanted me to do and that when she completed her medical degree I would take her advice. Now, I don't feel insecure at all, I ignore her, come back at her, listen and let it go in one ear and out the other, or whatever it takes so as not to give her the satisfaction of upsetting, insulting me. I think as I grew older I also got alot wiser and realized that in the whole scheme of things, MIL was a blip on the radar. Example - new floor laid recently in kitchen, laundry and my office. MIL comes over unannounced/uninvited. Comments how nice the floor looks but the color really isn't right, such and such color would have been much better. Response: This is the color I chose because DH and I like it. End of subject, diffused her. Do I hate that she is the way she is, yes indeed. Will I allow her to abuse me the way she did for years, never again, nor will I have my husband fight my battles for me. Example: I attend a family (DH relatives) shower. Arrive with MIL & SIL. We sit down to eat at a very long table full of women. MIL stands up and introduces SIL to several women SIL did not know. I knew a few, but not many. She did not even acknowledge that I was seated in the room. When she was finished her introductions, I stood up and introduced myself as my DH's wife. It got the point across that I am worthy, whether she thinks so or not. I think she also looked badly to the relatives whom I did know who were watching her intentionally ignore me. I am sorry if my examples seem pollyanna, but they have worked for me. I don't feel badly, insecure, hurt or any other adjective that I formerly felt when MIL would descend on my home or when I had to interact with her. I also have never asked my husband to choose to one of us. That would be wrong in my opinion. As much as dislike her, she is his mother, the only mother he will ever have. I wouldn't want to have to choose my husband or my mother, why would I ask DH to do so? The way I deal with this situation is not for everyone. You need to have alot of self-esteem and a bullet proof vest over your heart. It starts with mostly false bravado, which eventually becomes actual bravery.

To everyone....of course I would autograph all copies. I have thought about this book for such a long time and decided it was time to start writing. I am starting the book off with the Day the Music Died.....Buddy Holly. I am including not just "Rock & Roll" but Soft Rock, Hard Rock, etc. As I told DH....there is more to the deaths then just Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, and Elvis. I agree that school funding should not be on the backs of homeowners, through real estate taxes...and it is not fair to take the meager incomes of seniors to pay for school funding. My father will be 90 in May and is living on Social Security. Because his income is small, his real estate taxes are reduced dramatically. I think that's a wonderful program, and if it isn't nationwide, it should be. Education costs have skyrocketed and are spiraling out of control. The union is a major part of the problem, but that's an issue for the "Hot Topics" forum. I think it would be wise to abolish the Department of Education, and send its funding to the states. Education should be a state issue, IMO. In the olden days, education was a part of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. That department was replaced by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education. Whenever the government creates a new bureaucracy, it incurs tremendous new administrative costs. If necessary, oversight at the national level could be absorbed within the Department of Health and Human Services. A major source of funding for education should be lotteries. I remember when the Maryland Lottery started, they said proceeds would go to fund education. The lotteries are a huge source of revenue. Unfortunately, the politicians play games with the lottery money (if a state has revenue from lotteries, they reduce the funding for education so they can divert the funds to other projects). Just like the politicians took the Social Security and Civil Service retirement fund monies out of the "lockbox" and put them into the general treasury for their own spending spree. [The subliminal message here is to get rid of all 536 spendthrifts in Washington, D.C.] There is a push in Washington to raise the mandatory education age to 18. That's a wonderful thing in theory, but I can't imagine that it will work. It's hard enough for parents to keep their kids in school until age 16! I heard that only 43% of Washington, D.C. students graduate from high school. If members of congress can't keep their own kids (and those of their neighbors) in school, how are they going to enforce that in the rest of the country? I was just looking at a e-reader last night, trying to make up my mind about getting one. The prices of books are really high, unless I am looking in the wrong place. I usually pick up (at least) two paperbacks at Costco every month in the under 6 $ range (sometimes the larger ones) and trade when we are traveling. My hands cannot hold hard cover books and some of those 'publisher' size I really have to want to read or I pass them by for size alone. Still looking and contemplating.

Well, I'm a hoarder, but of the paper variety books. I cannot pass up a book sale, I get books as gifts, our library has a sale four times a year, etc. etc. I don't think I'll ever get an e-reader.....I love the feel of paper, I guess.

I buy loads of books and magazines. But I've found great places to recycle them- a local charity has set up a book drop in a shopping center prking lot. Magazines get left either in the hospital waiting room or laundromat.The guy who works at the laundromat came over and thanked me for leaving magazines.

Heather-- No, you arn't the only one. Count me in. I'm addicted to my Kindle and to free books. I can't help it. I do actually read them though. It's my drug of choice, download free books, enough of them so that I can breathe easier.

Now, if you had that many hard copy books.... that would constitute a problem.

WOw! You guys have made me feel better! I got a Kindle for Christmas, was feeling guilty and told my girls omg I am not sure I will live long enough to read these books! I've bought one?? I have like 474 I think? on it! LOL

So, if Heather has that many e-books and I have almost three times that many in hardback, does that make me a book hoarder?

Yes, we have over 3,000 hardbacks. We read, a lot, and collect specific authors. Yeah, we probably could sell some but that's a lot of work.

I only delete the books I don't enjoy. I love rereading books and have one collection labelled books to be reread.

Heather, you're not alone and you are in very good company. I'm right here in the middle of it, too.

I have an iPod. Have I mentioned (at least 1,000,000 times) how much I love, use, need, appreciate, rely on, and love my iPod??? Of the 149 Apps I have in it, one of them is the Kindle Reader App. I can download all the free books and I can buy Kindle books for it too. It does most everything a seperate Kindle would, but I can't get the voice enhanced books.

I subscribed to Pixel Ink (notifies folks about new free ebooks) after reading about it here.

I don't know how many Kindle books I have in the iPod but it's well over 100. I have that many more in iTunes free downloads, and then about 150 audio books that I've paid for. Oh I love my iPod...and reading is just a small part of why I have it.

I also have way-too-many "real" books. But that's for another thread.

I used to be a book hoarder with hard copies. DH and I had more than one argument over books. Surprisingly, though, since I have had my kindle I've been very careful to only download books that I -really- want to read so I don't feel like that's hoarding. I'm quite proud of myself, actually. :)

Heather, you are NOT alone, but most of mine are paper back. And I re-read a lot of them! I got my Kindle Fire for Christmas. Most of what I have, I bought. I haven't found many of the historical romance free. And I have favorite authors. In fact, I will eventually re-buy some of the collections I have in paper back for the KF. I love my "real" books, but I love my KF too. I can prop it in my lap with the cover as an easel when my hands hurt and not have to hold it.

Caroline, I also have all of the books on the Kindle on my iPod and iPad. They get synced constantly. I read the Kindle when I am outside in the sun, but my favourite device to read a book just happens to be my iPod too. The one nice thing about the Kindle is that it allows me to sort the books into collections or folders. When I want to read a book of a certain genre, I just go there to see what title to choose. Unfortunately the Kindle doesn't show the cover of the books so I look to the iPod and iPad to see covers. I wish the Kindle App for those devices would have a way of sorting the books into collections too.

I only have about 200 on my kindle, but I am trying hard to get rid of all the paperbacks in my bookshelves. I got tired of books stacked around everywhere.

Yes, I delete books from my Kindle after I've read them. I rarely re-read a book. There are just too many un-read ones waiting for me, so why would I want to read a book twice?

When I first got my Kindle I downloaded EVERY free book I found out about. I'm a little more discerning now, but not much. After all, if I don't like it I don't feel bad at all about deleting it, since I didn't pay for it.

And our library is getting into the swing of things and I can check out ebooks from them, too.

I love my non-E books, every one of them and have a very hard time getting rid of any, but because of limited space I find I have to donate to the library thrift shop on a regular basis, in order to make room for more. But there are many "keepers" which line my walls and will always retain their place there. I find myself looking at them all lined up on the shelves, and remembering certain feelings I have experienced while reading them.

I love the smell, heft, and feel of a book. Also, and very importantly, I can share that book with others.

My husband wanted to buy me a kindle for christmas and I said noooooo I have too many hard copy books I have not read yet. He said that is the point, maybe we could get into the guests bedrooms. Nooo, I said, I want to keep my books, what if the kindle malfunctioned and I lost all my books that I downloaded? Anyway he bought himself a kindle, but he did not get rid of his hardcopy books..but seriously Could that possibly happen, you loose your downloaded copy of books on kindle? I have over 521 books that have been catagorized, so far that have been counted and catagorized. That was several years ago. We have built in book shelves in both guest rooms for mine and my husbands books, plus the books our children left behind...if we both bought a kindle a piece do you think someone would be interested in these books? or just good for kindling? Who would you suggest we call?

All books are kept on your file/account with Amazon. The ones you get from them anyway. Every one I have on my Kindle is from Amazon.
My experiences with hardcover books is you will never regain the cost of them. Unless of course you have an extremely rare copy.

Unless you fully delete the book from Amazon, you just archive it once you have finished with it if you want and then you just download it again when you want it again. The only way you would lose your books maybe entirely is if Amazon ceased to exist. I have my books stored on my Kindle, my iPod and iPad and I don't imagine all of the devices would go to cyber heaven all at once. I could transfer the files to my PC as well but that would be overkill.

Thank you, Nodakgal, heather...good to know. I wasn't planning on selling them, but that is a thought. I am not sure what my grown kids want to do with old college text books, old novels, etc. None of my books are that rare. Some are from the 1970's though, and on up. Boy, this is going to be a job!! When my husband and I first got married we did not own a t.v. for 7 or 8 years. So guess what we did. LOL
