Market Day, Sept. 3

Pretty good day today at our little farmers' market. Only 6 vendors today, including me, so the season is winding down. Last week with Irene messing up the weather, only Mr. Brown came to sell at the market. The skies were overcast today and the temp fairly cool. I had to contend with a great many flies even though all my baked goods were in plastic bags.

Today I had Milk & Honey loaves, Multigrain loaves, Banana Walnut mini loaves and a bunch of cinnamon rolls. I sold all the large loaves, most of the rolls, and one mini banana loaf. But that is fine with me as I will take one to my mom and freeze two to take to the mountains next weekend. I was able to leave by 10 AM, which made me happy.

Looking forward to a long weekend quilting at Beech Mt. coming up. I made Paula Deen's Baked Spaghetti recipe to take up for dinner. I'm also going to make Welsh Cakes (cookies with currents, dredged in sugar!) and.......I'll have to make some more bread to take as I am.....all out! Ha!

Chase, I bake on Thursday and Friday nights and do not freeze any of the breads I sell. But, for myself, here is what I do to freeze yeast breads: ~ have bread baked completely and cooled on a wire rack ~ put bread in a plastic bag (bag #1) or wrap well in plastic wrap or foil - then, put in a heavy weight freezer zip bag (bag #2) and seal getting all the air out of the second bag ~ put in freezer to freeze solid w/o getting smooshed by anything else ~ keep up to 3 months, but the sooner you use it, the better ~ to thaw, take loaf out of bag and wrap in a clean paper towel, put back in bag #1 and let sit on counter until completely thawed - once thawed, remove paper towel from bag#1. The paper towel is needed to absorb any ice condensation on or in the loaf. Your bread will not have a soggy bottom done this way. Another thing I do is to cut 4-6 slices of the loaf, put them in a heavy zip bag, then into a second freezer bag and freeze the slices. You can fill several smaller bags with the sliced bread, then put all the bags into a larger freezer weight zip bag, seal getting all the air out and freeze. Teresa

Update: Thanks for the advice on seller financing. I was having trouble with my realtor and it clouded my vision. I took the house off the market. I am going to continue doing all the repairs, spending $3,000. a year. We got a fourth offer. She said it wasn't that great, and I didn't see it. (I think it was with seller financing.) You were right about the family. That night, I heard a bunch of people outside my home as I was trying to sleep. A man's voice said, "Stephenie, your house isn't selling. "125,000." It was so creepy! Thank God I didn't get into that mess! The agent was trying to control who I chose as an agent for the cabin I'd found. She also wasn't conveying my messages to the agents who had made offers. She kept trying to get all buddy buddy with me, and discussing inappropriate subjects. (Her daughter on meth and pregant with twins, her sex life, her grandchild that she has custody of because she was going into foster care...") I kept trying to get her to focus on the business of the sale and she would veer off. It's like she wanted a therapist or a friend. She said that the buyers who had made offers talked to the next door neighbors and they had nothing nice to say about me or my property. (He was intercepting them during showings.) I was worried that would happen. That's why I was moving, to get away from them. My mom said they may buy the REO cabin as an investment property. They could pay cash. They helped me buy this one, and are very happy with how it looks now. It was an eyesore when we bought it.

Yes, I will miss the market day reports, too. Are wasps a problem there? They are here at this time of year.

No wasps, dedtired, but there was a big old honey bee buzzing at one point. I guess the sweet aroma of the cinnamon buns was drawing them all in.

Teresa-NC - recommend to you what I do for flies: Spray a little anti-bug spray on a paper towel and blot the place where they land. The flies always seem to land at the same place so it deters them from repeating. My market is having a hard time competing with the dumpster at the end of the parking lot we inhabit on Saturday mornings that is filled with refuse from the next door over's fish restaurant. Also, a small battery operated fan strategically located to blow over the offerings keeps them from landing.

P.S. I go to Sugar Mountain in October and my view is all of Beech Mountain. Suppose you are looking back and seeing me on Sugar? T'wd be too funny!

Starlightfarm, the market where I sell is in Gibsonville, just between Greensboro and Burlington. I'd love to see you, but will not be there Sept. 10.

Chase, our market is supposed to end the first Saturday in November. If I have orders for the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays, I just plan to meet the customer at the market green parking area. One special customer gets home delivery and I have had two customers pick up at my home.
