Hmmmm, I might need to take a drive up this week. I need some cabs to put together our built in buffet hutch. I found plans doing it with old kitchen cabs.

It's a reuse center here in the DC area. They do architectural and construction reclamation. Yesterday they were wheeling in long, long pieces of old wood from a house that burned and was deconstructed. The inventory is always changing and there's always something I can use. Unfortunately! Around the corner a ways is the Habitat for Humanity, so I can kill two birds with one trip!

Senator13, I am building a credenza with old cabs. Also a wall of cabs in my laundry room. They're from "orphans". An orphan cab is $5.00, which is why I stopped building them from scratch. Why reinvent the wheel?

I think right now, the orphans aren't the quality you'd probably want. I don't think you'd want to buy a set, either, because you'd end up with a bunch of unnecessary stuff. But I sometimes pick up a set (9 solid plywood wall cabs for $60.00) when I want most of it. I leave the rest as a donation.

If you can figure out what you'd need for your buffet, I could let you know what's there. I go every Friday. Often they have %50 off sales. March is for doors!!! YEAH!!!

My credenza/buffet will be laid out like this:
bottom row: a 24", 27", 24" base cab
Top row: a w2442 glassed cab, a w2718 glassed cab (gotta make that, I think) and another w2442 glass.
The 42" tall glass ones will sit on the base cabinets. As a small lift underneath them, I have 2 spice drawer thingys I'm going to cut down to 24" wide. Just more texture.

Can you imagine these? Oh = and beaded inset! :) yeah again!

I'm pretty thrilled with how things are turning out. I admit, if I had closets I probably wouldn't be so cabinet-ocd.

This is my overall concept:

I probably won't make the trim as cottage-y, since that is not the general feel of our house (arts and crafts). Like you, I would also replace the fronts with glass on the top cabs. Lastly, I would try and put a wine fridge in the middle part. I do however, like that the bottom is all drawers. I also liked how the reused the cabs and a desk (which gives you the drawers on the bottom). If you ever see anything like this locally that someone is trying to get rid of, e-mail me and I will get it! We have quite a bit of space on that wall, but the size above would probably be a perfect balance. I am also planning on doing the beadboard like you and what they did.

I have bought doors from Barker Doors, which has saved me tons and tons of $$ and time. If we (we!?) can find you the cabinet boxes, buying glass doors is nuttin'.

Are you going with standard 24" base drawers?
And how tall on the wall cabs?

Oh - I feel better! I was all set to be hating the wonderful things you end up with. Nothing at all like that near where I live (middle of SD).

After reading all your postings about Community Forklift I've been trying and trying to get down there, but it is a 2 hour drive from home. I thought it was going to happen last week when we had to attend a funeral down around DC... I had mapped out the directions from the funeral home...only 15 minutes... but can you imagine, DH wouldn't go...something about not being dressed appropriately.... oh rats.

Make sure you hit the stores right after kitchen shows! Our Habitat for Humanity got an entirely new set of kitchen cabinets after a local show because the manufacturer didn't want to haul them back!

Mulemom, you wouldn't have been able to touch a thing. It's dirty and dusty. I'm sorry about the funeral and sorry you couldn't make it to the 'Fork.

ayerb73, I'm wondering if that's why in the last two weeks they have both had these amazing, gorgeous kitchens donated. It really makes me wish I hadn't piecemealed mine. but then again, mine's installed.

Can't wait until Friday. I just need one more cabinet and I. Am. Done. I swear. At least with the cabinets!

I took my 1st trip to Community Forklift on Sunday. I didn't buy anything, but had a blast looking around. We will definitely keep an eye on this place as we plan (and execute) our DIY kitchen.
