This week's 'Forklift Finds.. (a little OT)

So I've been gloating over this find on my last Friday's visit, but didn't have anyone to tell. It's not kitchen related, so I didn't think I should post it here. Then, I realized I found something that is kitchen related, so yeah!!! I can gloat with you.

Friday I found someone had dissembled their deck. For about $300, I bought about $2500's worth of material for my future back deck. The 4' drop out my bedroom's slider is extremely inconvenient.

Anyway, I got 24 concrete footers, 16' boards, 6x6s, 2x8s, 2x10s, 2x6s, some 2x4s, and stair risers, all treated. I found drainage tile to use on my future retaining wall. (The grade around my house is horrible, conveniently dumping acres of water against my foundation.)

I found ledger boards for attaching the deck to the house, to go under the siding I'm already having put on the back of the house. I found an entire box of 2x8 joist hangers. $.50 a piece or $5.00 for the box of 100.

I think next week I'll go through the hardware area and find the necessary lag bolts.

Kitchen related: I found marble back splash that I will someday install behind my sink. hehehe. About 6's worth.

But I just bought a deck! Now I just have to save the $$ to have the darned thing put together and attached to the house. I guess I have to save for the top/flooring boards, but in the face of an entire deck? whoopie!

BTW. The fellow who does my drywall when I have $$ is putting the siding on the back of the house. After 6 years, my entire house will finally be covered. He's doing it in exchange for bow hunting rights on my back acres. He also picked up my deck materials in his big-boy truck. He's excited about putting up the deck. We'll barter or I'll pay him his more than reasonable and affordable price. I am so lucky.

And of course, I found my marble backsplash....

Crow away, Christine, you've earned it.

Now that I know you have back acres suitable for bow hunting (inside the Beltway???), however, I have figured out where your determination and resourcefulness come from: You are eerily channeling any number of nameless pioneer heroines who just had to plug away in the face of misfortune and create a life out of what was available.

Wow Christine, you are resourceful. I'm so enjoying your posts and enthusiasm and are more than a little impressed with the building related knowledge that you have learned along the way. You deserve all the luck you have received of late. What's next on your list? Congratulations on your new find.

Remodelfla, I wish you were around, too. :) I'd love your help stripping my mahogany front doors (yes, 2) because my STBX wanted dark stain. He didn't want much, so I did it. I hate it because they look like mud. I started trying to do it and I think I've muxed them up enough to need some serious sanding. Boooo. It's certainly a talent you have! I don't really have friends. I know people and like some, but I lived out here in isolation for several years, with only my rather antisocial STBX, waiting for him to come home from work. Then, here by myself and working 3 jobs. What time would I have? I have a real phobia about asking for help, anyway, because I don't want to impose. I did give in once to someone coming over to prime my living room ceiling. I was thinking, "well, I really need to learn to accept some help and he's 6'4" ". I DIDN'T want to. Then, it turned out that he thought he was going to hit on me. Since I don't see myself that way, I was floored, then somewhat cranky about it. Mudhouse. I have a barn. 2000 SF. It's full of CRAP my STBX threw in there. I'm slowly finding people that want it. I had it rebuilt last year, (that year's project) because it was tilting sideways from water damage and termites. It's cool now and I want it empty except for MY building materials. And maybe a lawn mower when I get one this year. Mine blew up in pieces last spring. I'm wishing/planning out loud. I forgot to tell you. I traded a non-running BMW convertible for 3000 brick pavers. I ended up giving them away because they were just stacked in the drive. It was before I knew about my STBX and thought we had plans to lay them. I've never had a driveway. Now, I still don't. I did wreck my El Dorado's suspension transporting 100 at a time. I'm into big trades. :) a2gemini, Quaker Maid. That's encouraging! These are nice, I think. Solid wood all the way around and even the hinges are in good shape. I don't care about current quality, since these are proved! [LOL!] leela4, It's been said I have a Huuuuuuge personality! I'm so huge I can stand on my countertops and press my head against the ceiling to paint. 'Nuff. Just gotta get the corner cabinet inside before it rains tomorrow. Just another project! But one I look forward to. I'm not letting myself start until I finish SOMETHING. Thanks all, for the encouragement. C.

Christine: When I go on a perceived "wild goose chase" and wind up disappointed, ticked off, tired etc I always say to myself - better to know than not know. If I don't go and check I will constantly wonder should I have gone, was it perfect, did I miss out. Disappointed oh yea, but I least I know for sure. Looking forward to hearing about your next successful find. While we're whining (so hopefully I'm not hijacking or OT)- my Thursday included discovering two water marks on my kitchen ceiling - yep need a new roof in my newly renovated house. (Should have checked the roof) AND - discovering that we have a wasps nest between the ceiling/floor joists of the basement and second floor. A few years ago we had a gas line added when we retrofitted our fireplaces to gas. During the renos the guys redid the work and removed the outside gas line but didn't plug up the hole into the house. So now we have a wasps nest in our house and the pest destroyers to come in. Hopefully we don't have to start taking down ceilings. So that's two things right? So the third thing - the beautiful fabric that the designer had chosen for our new ottoman has a huge flaw in it that can't be worked around and it is in the entire bolt and is now being discontinued. So I have to choose again. So Thursday was a very expensive day and all before noon.

A little OT, I need to buy a new mattress

We purchased the Simmons Beautyrest Black Helena Pillowtop back in Dec 2006. I truly loved it for the first few months, and then it started with the body indentations. I thought the indents were from the mattress cover, so took that off, no change, turned mattress, nothing. It progressively got worse that we had 2 ditches in this King size. I called Boston Store Furniture Gallery, 20 months into owning it. Major back and neck problems set in. They sent out an inspector and sure enough, 1 Â½ inch body indents and the sides of the mattress were busting out. Inspector told me that his report would reflect a defective mattress. I asked his opinion of how many defective mattresses he seeÂs and he said "off the record" to strongly fight for a replacement but to stay clear of this Helena as he has seen many defective mattresses. Simmons sold me on the single coils for less movement on the mattress as I flip a lot. In my opinion, those single coils are receiving a lot of strain. In order to get a replacement under the warranty, it has to be equal or greater than what I had spent. Well, I really donÂt want to get another Helena due to the problems I had on this one. The salesperson hasnÂt heard any of these complaints and actually had 3 other couples trying out the Helena as we spoke. She has sold over 100 of these w/o any other complaints. I have 21 days to decide if I want it replaced, or to try another mattress. She wants me to try it again, but I hesitate. Due to what I spent on the Helena, I would have to go with a Tempurpedic type bed but donÂt think that will work for us. Anyone else having problems with the Helena indentations? Suggestions on a Simmons or Sealy plush mattress?

Isn't scrounging just FUN? I spent an hour and a half today going to a fav. place in a large state forest nearby (well, 30 miles away) to exchange 3 of the $3 cab doors I bought for a larger size. No great finds for me, but a couple of things friends may like. An absolutely gorgeous old 19 tall screen door with ornate hand-cut corner brackets that I bet you couldn't have passed on. And I get to pet llamas and great pyrenees and admire sheep. Progress report: I have the four boxes built for my new pantry cabs. Insides are sanded and varnished with a double coat. Doors are sanded. Tomorrow I plan to prime the doors, install the shelf brackets, and fill and prime the cab fronts. Found some handles at H4H, some used hinges on eBay. And I keep learning how-to-do-it-better-next-time things. Sunday I can finish paint the doors and cabs. Nothing goes as fast as I think it will. I would LOVE to see what you will do with your 6 x 6's!!! Sandy

Now, if I can get up the gumption to figure out how to build the deck itself, so I don't have to fork out the $$.

But some things are better left to pros...

No, honorbiltkit, I'm juuuuuuuust outside the beltway. I'm between DC & Annapolis off Rte 50, getting off at 197 or 301, I'm 12 minutes south.
I can see Andrew's AFB lights when the sky is right, but I'm rural enough that people get worried about where they are when they make the trek out here. You can tell a true Freecycler by whether or not they can persevere enough to find my house! [LOL] My address is Upper Marlboro, but the house across the street is Bowie. I'm on the Anne Arundel/PG county lines.

I'm still working on my MBR Tansu and must stain & seal my BB countertop. Other than that, I'm trying not to start any of the many new projects I have until I can point to something and say, "That's finished!"

I can't wait until Friday's trip to the CF. :)

Great finds - Congrats!

and for no other reason than to just say, "small world" - I know, relatively, where you are. ;-) I'm in AA County - up in Millersville. It's been awhile since I've driven in your direction, but at least I know of its existence.

(isn't 6 flags over there, bowie way? down 301 and over 424?)

Once again, congrats on the find! Perhaps I should take dh over to meander through community forklift. (although he is not one to immediate see "the diamond in the rough." I REALLY have to spell it out for him. ;-P""""")

424 would take you way out of the way in a big loop just to insect with 301 again. :)
You could just continue down 301 to 214, go west and 6 flags is a ways down. So yup!

I worked in Odenton for 3 years. I kind of know where Millersville is. Never did get familiar with that area, being a 30 min drive from home.

Yes. Give him the sense of adventure, if you can. If he has one!

Congrats on your find. You are one lucky woman! I love it when stuff works out like that! P.S. I am right down the street from you (route 4 in Prince Frederick). So maybe I will have to go past your house on my next Forklift day and see what I can pick up "off site". Just kidding! :)

Christine, it's not just luck, but your perseverence and foresight! It's wonderful to hear you're on an upswing--can't wait to see your BB counter--it's going to be beautiful! As always, you're an inspiration!
