DH Wants Curtains I dont! Help (Pics)

Sorry, this is a bit long, but we have just moved into our little house (800 sf) and I really need the help of all the GW readers with the window treatments for our two large windows Â both are 72"W x 83"H. In between the windows there is a set of French doors which go to our courtyard.

My DH and I went shopping today, he wants curtains, I donÂt. My first love are the shutters from House Beautiful (May 08) see pic, but I doubt there is enough room for them. What about roller shades or roman shades.?

The LR is only 13Âwide and our windows (and the doors) face a courtyard. I am not worried about the French doors has they have the built in blinds.

Our plans are to live in this house only 6 months of the year. We live in south Texas so we have decorated in a slightly Santa Fe rustic-style (thanks LynninMexico-such an inspiration). AND!!! we have the problem of a lot of dust as our house is one of the first built and there will be A LOT of construction dust for the next year, blinds are simply out of the question.

I need to find treatments that:

* Close at night

* Are easy to clean

* Will be installed inside the window frame

* Will go with a southwestern style,

* Window sills are a soft white.

* We already installed the solar screens on the outsides of the windows for the bright southern sun.

* Our ceilings are 10' high

I liked the H.Douglas woven texture and I like the soft woven woods. Do we also need to have curtains to soften the windows? What recommendations or suggestions can anyone make?

I would think woven woods would be wonderful (geez, let's be alliterative here, Les) in your space. Honestly, tho I love the look of those shutters, I don't think they make sense in a space the size of yours. You don't really seem to have the wall space to open them, for one thing.

One more thing - have you ever considered angling the cabinet that sits to the right of the couch? I think it would be a nicer fit and show off the contents more if it were angled in that corner.

Thanks Les on the angling of the cabinet, I'll give that a try.

Woven woods -- colors?? there are a ga-zillion, do I blend with the sill, do I accent off the rug? Dark brown, light-er brown???

Right now, (until we paint) I seem to have a lot of dark browns and beige. I don't mind the beiges as our last house was all the deep burgundy/reds. Right now the lighter wall colors are okay, but I seem to be traveling down the brown or beige road!

I don't have a warming drawer, but am planning on one in our new home. I want it for proofing bread, making yogurt, keeping foods warm till serving time, warming plates, I'm looking at the DCS because it seems to be the deepest and should be able to hold my crock while proofing bread dough. If the temp goes high enough, I think it could also hold my canning jars while waiting to be filled. So I'm sure I'd be using it several times daily. Currently I use my Excalibur dehydrator for a good deal of defrosting of frozen foods; and I also use it for quickly drying my blender container, my olive oil jar, and plastic tupperwares. But I think the warming drawer might function almost as well and would hold a lot more.

Beverly -- no hurry. But I really think they would have to be super tiny to work. It's hard to imagine someone making them small enough for this -- my guess is that beads will be a better size -- BUT YOU NEVER KNOW. I will be excited to see what you find. And if not, I know I can find the perfect beads to fashion some. AND, yes, I know I have a mental illness of some sort, but, well... I have an announcement: I am starting over on the stocking. I know, I know. But I keep looking at it and thinking I wish the whole foot was blue and the top of the waves were just above where the BOTTOM of the blue is. That would give me so much more room for the stocking to fold down over the palms. You can't tell in the picture, but when I appliqued on the palm trunks it "pulled" the stocking in and the fabric is bunched behind the sun to hide it -- which was very preventable because even though I turned under the edges of the trunks they have fusible on back and I didn't think to, like, hello, fuse them in place before stitching them down, so I'd love to redo that part. I also would change a couple other things just slightly but mostly I want to move the whole thing down and now that I know what goes where it's not going to take long to re-do. WELL, the hammock was a bit of a chore but I can do it while watching TV anyhow. I told DH that if I had enough fabric I wanted to start over and he got a look on his face where I knew he kind of wanted that foot all blue too. (Never mind HE is the reason it is NOT!!!!) But sometimes you just have to live with something awhile to know you don't want to live with it forever!!!! I have already cut out the red and blue for the new front.

Well I see you have kids (by your screen name) I have a church pew on one side. It works out great for the kids. I use along with chairs. The bench has a back so I don't have to worry about the kids falling off backwards. (I have tiny grandkids) Just a thought. Or a regular bench is fine. you can find them easily and paint them I actually use a bench on just one side chairs on the other.

premier, the window isn't as small as it looks in the photo I posted. Not really an expert at taking digital photos. budge1, looks like someone found your example - and I like it. I am looking on the interet to find some material I like. Not that I need a sewing project now, but chances of finding the colors I want already made is probably very slim. I think a lot of little things wouldn't be good either - either just one teal or aqua clock or a valance. dekr8 - are those your curtains? Did you make them or do they come already made up? If you made them, did you use a pattern? I really like that idea. I can almost picture some brown and aqua valance hanging from those pegs - I like the use of pegs - different than most valances. The first material, (link posted below) edged in brown would look great on my window I think. DH and I love aqua too. We once went to look at a boat and when we walked up and saw the interior was aqua, we just looked at one another and knew we were going to buy it. This is the first time we have used it in our decorating. Well except maybe years ago when the southwest type colors were in. retro cotton fabric, scroll down for photo vintage hip chocolate and brown Thanks for everyone's help. I have never bought anything on ebay before, I might try on that first fabric and see how it goes - I have 5 hours to think about it or I could just order one yard - since it is 54 inches wide that is probably all I would need - or I could get two yards and do a couple of pillows for the family room sofa or a table runner for my dark table. Would too much coordination with the same material be too hokey?

I can't even with a copy of the link see the pics.

As for lots of dust I would suggest nothing woven or anything that can't easily be wiped down. Washable drapes sounds like a good option too.
