manual defrost upright freezer- black
Comments (5)Plenty of "pretty" all freezer units are offered, but they will all be expensive, frost free, and designed to be integrated into a kitchen rather than stuck in the laundry room. Utility freezers are a different animal all together. They're not designed to be pretty and to go with decor. They are designed to be functional and to be placed in a utility room or garage space. If you want something other than the usual boring white, then paint a mural on the case with artist's acrylics or wrap it in copper or decopauge flowers on it or something. And see if you can't find a black freezer gasket at an appliance parts store to replace the white gasket with....See MoreChest Freezer - manual or auto defrost?
Comments (12)I prefer manual defrost. If you are keeping food for longer than 2-3 months, the quality will be better - and you don't have to have freezer burn to have a loss in quality (particularly with dessert and dairy items). Besides lower energy costs as others have pointed out, manuals are usually quieter - although this may not matter depending where you put it. I've seen larger frost free chest freezers, but I don't think I've seen any in the size you are looking for. My old Sears manual defrost chest freezer had a flash defrost feature which was nice because it speeded up the process considerably. Are you sure 5 Cu ft is enough? It probably wouldn't cost much more to go up to 7 or 8. My guess is once you start using it, you'll want the extra space. Best wishes....See MoreUpright Freezer with Reversible Doors
Comments (0)Does anyone know of a largish (~20 cu ft) upright freezer that has reversible doors (or hinges from the left side)? We had been looking at the Kenmore Elite 28099 until we discovered that the door only opens to the right, and that won't work for us. Ive found two: An Amana AQF2013TEW, but it only has manual defrost, and I don't want to deal with that. The other is a Whirlpool EV209NBTQ which has two doors (it might be okay) Anyone know of anything else?...See MoreNo power, food in manual defrost upright how long
Comments (21)As Cilantro said, wrapping the freezer in anything insulating will help. Here in Michigan I lost power once for six days and had a big chest freezer full of beef. It didn't even start thawing until day 3. That's when I started canning beef on a gas burner that I lit with a match. I lost things like ice cream and the girls ate baked goods to their heart's content and shared with their friends, but I managed to save some of it, at least. I think you're safe, I wouldn't hesitate to keep the stuff if your freezer. The "experts" say that food will stay frozen in a full freezer for approximately 48 hours, so yours probably thawed very little. You may have ice crystals in your ice cream or have other quality issues, but I wouldn't worry about the safety. Annie...See Moresushipup1
