Is this a good idea?

I'm preparing breakfast for a church crowd and want to make-ahead breakfast tacos/burritos.

If I make them on Saturday (they will include potato, egg, bacon and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla), wrap them in foil, refrigerate overnight, can I reheat them in the oven and then keep them warm in a crockpot during service?

Do you think they will dry out?

I think they would probably reheat better in the microwave, but the foil will be a problem. Should I not wrap them, then reheat in the microwave then wrap them in foil?

This sounds like a silly question now that I'm writing it out, but I do value your opinions!

I think the problem will not be drying out. I think the tortillas will get soggy.

If you are using flour tortillas, then you will be making burritos instead of tacos. Flour tortillas are worse about getting soggy than corn tortillas, and I would recommend making tacos instead of burritos. If you do make burritos and they get a bit soggy, you can unwrap the foil and heat them a bit more, but I would not use a crockpot for that. If you make tacos, make sure that you use two tortillas for each taco, which is how they are made in Mexico.

Are you going to have beans and rice as side dishes? Those you could keep in crock pots.

Well you hit on a key item. The plants in the pot with potting soil do better than being directly in your current soil. So you just need to amend the soil. Generally, that will be just adding compost to your yard soil, but you can do more different things also, such as measuring your soil PH conditions, etc For adding the compost part, it is sometimes recommended that you can just add it on top, but in your case, since you don't have other plant growth there that you want to keep and you are interested to do some digging anyway, you can till it into the top 3-4" of your soil (a little deeper also if you want to plant plants with deeper roots) However, I'd suggest to do that this year and go with some casual plants that you don't mind if they die. If this works and your soil can sustain them, then next year, you can try other more permanent plants or perennials. The other part is to ask if this area is really right up against your house, is it getting any bad water from gutters or lack of sunshine from the house blocking the area? Rock gardens or xeriscaping is also becoming more popular, especially with the water restrictions that many homeowners are facing. If you're willing to redo the landscape for that, it's a viable possibility also.

In our last house, the 2 tub/showers, 2 toilets, and 2 sinks were all back-to-back, and atop the lower level half-bath. The house was built in 1959, we bought it in 1996, and remodeled the baths in 2002. As far as we can tell, nothing more than minor toilet repairs and sink faucet drips were ever repaired. Wait, we know 2 bathrooms had been wallpapered over the painted drywall after 1975. So, unless you anticipate pipes freezing, I wouldn’t worry too much. This upper-midwesterner recalls her years living in Dallas, when 30-degree forcasts included warnings to let faucets drip. Hopefully your house will be better insulated.

I think either one looks fine. If your water supply escutcheon for the toilet is half on/half off, I would just scribe around the escutcheon and cut a half circle in the base. It does seem more uniform to use the same base throughout, though I have stone baseboards in both my full and half baths that are different from each other and the painted baseboards everywhere else.

Apple trees around patio, good idea or bad idea?

When and where fruit production is normal, but diligent picking that keeps up with ripening sequences is not undertaken orchard fruit trees being present = significant mess. Also in my maritime area fruiting apple trees attract wharf rats in addition to the usual birds, deer (when present) and so on. Even with such share cropping underway each late summer and fall it is still typical to see large numbers of apple trees scattered about in local communities with the ground beneath them blanketed by often still intact fallen apples. Showing that production is tending to far exceed the interest level of those occupying properties where these trees are present.

Why not do it as an enchilada bake, if you have an oven available? Fillings rolled in corn tortillas, topped with sauce, and baked. Can be made ahead. You could also do just a casserole, layering all of the ingredients in a lasagna pan, and cutting in squares after baking.

I agree that the bake would be better....but if you want something people can pick up like a sandwich....why not wrap them in parchment, then you can re heat in the micro.

My son makes breakfast burritos, wraps them in parchment or waxed paper, freezes them and then microwaves just before serving. His don't dry out or get soggy.

How many people are you cooking for?

Thanks for your responses.

Yes, the idea is convenience and "informality". This is just 'coffee hour' after service. We usually just stand and talk and plan while snaking. Our church kitchen is in the process of a remodel, so I'm not sure what appliances will be available - if any - or what shape the area will be in on Sunday. We are painting on Saturday.

The crowd could be anywhere from 30 to 50 people. We never know. I always make enough for the higher end and keep the leftovers for the kids' breakfasts (that's why I decided on the wraps).

No rice and beans, but Annie's salsa and probably some fruit/yogurt and maybe a baked 'sweet' of some kind.

Would using plastic wrap rather than foil work for you?

I also think that a casserole would be a better idea, but then you couldn't pick it up and eat it out of hand.

If you go with the burrito/taco idea I'd put them in waxed paper or parchment instead of foil, but I think I'd still try to either keep them warm in a crockpot or a big Nesco type roaster.

Would it be out of the question to just keep the tortillas separate and the filling warm in a crockpot and let everyone make their own as they go?

Use parchment...it's firmer than plastic wrap....and will breathe a little when heated and not make the tortilla as soggy as plastic. Besides it doesn't shrink and get funny like plasticw rap does when heated...

Maybe quesadillas or nachos would work better in this situation.

It's breakfast, Jim! Breakfast Nachos... I wouldn't care but some people are so traditional.

Otherwise, I have no idea how they would keep but I think they would get soggy and anyway, eggs cooked ahead are never the best. I'd make something else.
It's after service, sweet rolls and fruit?
That's never turned down here.
I don't think it has to be finger food either...if it smells good, looks good, people will linger and enjoy.
Or, sausage gravy in a crock pot and biscuits, (and jam and butter).
