A/C died - gas furnace still good! Good idea to replace w/dual HP

The air conditioner on our split system, 8 yr old Heil gas heat/air system quit 3 weeks ago. We have owned our home for 7 of it's 8 yrs, & knew who the original HVAC contractor was, so we called them for service. They came out & replaced inside evaporator coil, installed a hard start kit & new capacitor & added freon....all at a cost of $1300!! 4 days later the a/c stopped working again & blew the circuit breaker. This time contractor came out & said compressor is now shot & has recommended replacing of a/c unit with a Carrier HP 36,000 BTU system (don't have estimate with part #'s etc.,from him yet) & changing out necessary parts to keep gas furnace as back up to the HP (we live in northern Alabama so we do need this occasionally). He has given us a verbal estimate of $5200 & has said we can negotiate the invoice for the previous $1300 charge!

I think this sounds excessive & am not at all happy about paying anything at all for the $1300 repair that lasted 4 days!! I desperately need your input, guys, on the repair cost & the cost of the new unit, as well as whether or not it's a good idea to replace the system or just repair the AC! Thanks for your very valuable & welcome insights!
