Over 90 Bulbs Harvested & Hung, How do I store it in the South?
Comments (4)You might want to braid the softnecks so you can hang them. In your case, you will need to clean them up. I clean and remove roots and excess foliage before drying/curing. Haven't had any problems with that method yet. Same for the hardnecks, except that you cut off the cane a couple of inches above the tops of the cloves and store them in mesh onion or citrus bags. I store them in my second bathroom (in the shower stall, actually) which is only used occasionally for guests and has no outside windows and is not particularly damp. If we do have a run of damp weather (such as right now) I will put a small fan in that room to keep the air moving. Right now, the softnecks are done and hanging in the BR and the hardnecks were taken on the 4th and are hanging on their new rack in the "sewing room." As far as the heat in your home, I don't know how to help you with that. Up here we worry about being warm enough all year long....See MoreIf you can do it over, what would you do differently?
Comments (32)Just to jump in regarding working with an architect and timing - we started out the process working with an architect. This is our second build so we had a really good idea of what we wanted and thought we had a productive meeting with the architect. Then, it took 3-4 weeks to get the preliminary drawings, which weren't close to what we had in mind, and also which would have resulted in a home almost double our budget according to the first couple of builders we met with (the architect was aware of our budget and also supposedly "in the know" with cost to build a home and would make sure to give us a design that "would work" within our budget). So, we completely changed course and ended the relationship with the architect (luckily our agreement with him had various stages, so we only owed a small fee for the first round of drawings). When we met with builders we had a list of floor plan must haves & finishes and asked if they had any floor plans that met most of our must haves, with the level of finishes we wanted within out budget. We found a builder that had just built a house that was almost the exact floor plan we were looking for. I think this saved us a lot of time as we didn't have any back and forth with an architect and the builder could quickly/easily bid the job. I have to laugh looking back on it now because we essentially described that we wanted a colonial style (ie, basically a rectangle with a very simple roof line, so it should have been do-able and probably under our budget knowing what I've learned from the GW threads since then!). Not sure how the architect missed the mark on that one....See Morehow do you store seeds over the winter?
Comments (5)Bean seeds are viable for years. They must be kept dry. You might put them in a ziplock bag and freeze them temporarily to make sure there are no bugs in them, but with purchased beans I doubt that is necessary. Comments (16)drawers are great for "need it right now" storage of stuff (utensils, etc.). Drawers are quick-access storage, and good for small things. Putting stuff in a drawer far from where you use it is not helpful Don't feel you have to put kitchen stuff in them. What do you do on the countertop above those drawers? And what do you use when you do it? Can you put those items in the drawer, even if they're not the traditional drawer thing? If the drawer is on the far end of the kitchen, maybe it can hold stuff that gets used seldom--heck, lightbulbs, maybe. As for my drawers: I have 4 only. Closest to the dishwasher/main countertop is the silverware that goes on the table (flatware, serving spoons, chopsticks, iced team spoons). To the right, a short reach from the main countertop are the commonly used COOKING utensils that DON'T go on the table (spatulas, paring knives, whisks, measuring cups & spoons) To the left, on the "baking" end of my galley kitchen, is a drawer with the commonly used BAKING utensils (spatulas, biscuit cutters, measuring cups & spoons, pastry cutter). And beyond that is a drawer that holds the seldom used COOKING utensils (food thermometers, extra spatulas, hamburger press, corn-on-the-cob holders) Then I have a skinny drawer right next to the stove, and it holds all the stuff that other people put in the crock--the utensils used for cooking on the stovetop. I don't let this get to be too many pieces--no extras, only the stuff in heavy rotation. Last, I have a dinky drawer that used to hold hardware leftover from the kitchen reno (why?!?), and menus. Now it holds anything involved with closing containers--the bag clips, the jar opener, the cat-food can lids. And just a few menus. And the power unit for the electric griddle (bcs the electric griddle is stored one cabinet away). Feel free to store canned goods lying on their sides (maybe one specific category?), or all the beverage stuff (like tea, and coffee). Or anything else that'll fit....See Moresherwoodva
