All my furnitures antique except bedroom ...You cant get King size bed in antique.we have a sleighbed.We started buying antiques back about 1990,before the good things were bought up and prices were so high.

We have mostly antique furniture as well. Only a few things in our house are new. We bought alot of our stuff at auctions, but also inherited quite a bit. My parents were into antiques, so I've always appreciated and loved them. I think antiques are built so much better than anything new. I'm so weird, I can't even stand the look of new wood! lol My husband and I started going to auctions right after high school. I still enjoy going, but with 3 small kids, and my house already full, I really don't have the need to buy anything anymore! :( I do enjoy just going to look though.

I was always into antique/country. DH was always into contemporary until we bought this old 1920's house. It still has the original unpainted woodwork. He now likes the idea of using my inherited buffet, bookcase, etc. to furnish our home. He's now looking for a country type dining room set, and I'm looking for a sleigh bed. Yippee!!! Still can't get him though to go with refinished pine floors, both him and DS want carpet. Boo-hoo....

We have a few oldish pieces, inherited from my mother and grandmother (although not a lot of furniture; I have some old silver and tableware that I love). We bought quite a few new things for this old house, all Stickley/Mission style which suits it quite well.

Antiques seem to be built better than current furniture because all the cheap crap from 100 years ago has long been consigned to the landfill! In 2106 people will be admiring their great-grandmother's old china cabinet saying "Gee, they just don't build 'em like they used to!" because they were lucky enough to have a great-grandma who bought quality furnishings in 2006.

Good stuff lasts, whenever it was made.

We were fabulously lucky and bought a house (as-is) that was chock full of antiques. !!!!!

That aside, I'll say this: for us, fitting into the history of the home is important--but it's also very important not to live in a museum. We moved our own furniture into this house and removed a few pieces that were there, and ended up with a blended style. Our pieces tend to be very classic in lines, etc. but we get a little edgy with the fabrics (which can always be changed to suit later on). It allows us the best of both worlds.

I have been in some very, very old houses that were extremely contemporary inside, and if done well, it can work beautifully. Much depends on being comfortable with the pieces you own--if you love them and use them, no matter the age/style, they're more likely to seem like they "fit," IMHO.

I have mixed inherited antiques with modern furniture and some modern art, and very traditional rugs. The modern keeps the old from feeling fusty.

We can't afford antiques, but buy reproductions when we can find them. Most of the house is furnished in mission/craftsman style.

In our house, the case goods and tables are antiques. The beds and upholstered pieces are new. I have trouble paying for "new" wood that is really a veneer over plywood when I can find something antique, or just "old" that will do the trick.

Antiques were all we could afford. When our kids were young, our weekend entertainment was going to country auctions. We bought all sorts of old furniture. Some needed rehabilitating, some were just useful for the legs or other wood that could be made into something else. Our upholstered pieces are mostly new, but there are a few oldies there as well.

Now everyone says how lucky we are to have so many antiques.

I have all old furniture in my 1870's house, with one exception -- my office. I couldn't find anything that would work there, so I chose some very well-made, solid cherry home office furniture by Harden that will hold up and become antique some day. So far, it's worked out very well, although I wish the wheels on the lateral file cabinets had locks -- my floors aren't level.

I bought most of my antique furniture at auctions, and although I made a few minor mistakes, overall, I spent far less than I'd have had to spend for new furniture. I was lucky to find a double bed from the 1890's that takes a standard full mattress (although it's a tight fit). I'm also lucky to have parents who are very skilled in fixing and refinishing furniture.

Now I need to replace my Victorian couch, which is beyond repair. I expect that I'll have to buy something new.

I have all new furniture in my 1926 bungalow but new does not mean totally contemporary. I have a mix of traditional, Shaker, some Asian, a bit of misson, some contemporary - eclectic is my look, comfortable yet stylish is my aim.

I have a mix of antiques, classic, and contemporary furnishings that I will be moving into my 1923 Dutch Colonial Revival house.

I also always devote one room (usually the home office) to what can mostly be described at KITSCH. Where else am I going to display my tin wind-up robots, Springsteen collectibles, and tacky souveniers?

Heck, we spread the kitsch all around. My vintage Nauga monsters are in the guest room, my 1939 World's Fair paraphernalia is in the entry hall, and my grandpa's swizzle stick collection is in the breakfast room.

We have a mix of old and new furniture. I much prefer the old but sometimes it is just not comfortable. As for our art work, I was a showing artist for years so our art work are mostly originals and modern and some is mine and some are from friends in the field.

Hey...ya gotta go with what is special to you! And this is your home not a museum.

Ive been buying antiques and klediments and kitsch for 40 years and now my house is stuffed. I mix in new and crafts too if it fits. I think it doesnt matter if your furniture is old or new. What matters is that it fits the house. For example you wouldnt put french provincial in a craftsman house.

Let's see...I think we're a mix of antiques from both grandmas on my side (hutch, upright piano, four-poster full-size bed w/canopy, two secretaries, etc.), new furniture (Attic Heirlooms farmhouse table and matching hutch), and just plain-old used furniture--I wouldn't quite call them "antiques." The kind of stuff you don't mind painting or putting a mosaic on the top of, because it can't look any worse than it did. Old furniture with potential, I call it!!

We're both teachers (with two little kids) so real antiques are out of our budget and too worrisome with kids and dogs running around. The house sure is antique (1890's) and we'll keep all of the "antique" aspects of the house--hardwood floors, built-in cabinets, original lighting fixtures, etc.
