Popcorn balls?

My 7 year old niece is visiting, she wants to make popcorn balls. Anyone have a kid friendly recipe with ingredients that I likely have on hand? I will be doing all the cooking of course, but she can help shape them.

Very cool site grainlady.

You made Emily very happy!

She cut the butter, measured the marshmallows, the popcorn, and formed the balls.

We made a second batch-she thought chocolate chips would be a good addition.

It's all about the memories, and thank you so much for sharing yours. What a great train layout, that's something I would have loved. I go to the local train club shows even though I don't have a train one of my own. I carry on as many of my family's traditions as I can, and I have started a few of my own and adopted a few of my ex's family's too, because they are my daughters' memories. It can be a lot of work, especially when I'm not really up to it, but I can't even begin to describe the amount of satisfaction I get when I serve the foods my family looks forward to as part of their Christmas celebration. So I'll cook until I drop, and ship to those who aren't close by. In the meantime, I'll dream of that passenger train set from the 40's or 50's, the one where the cars light up and you can see silhouettes of the passengers. I can still see my Mom and Dad working together in the kitchen making dozens of ravioli and honey balls, and I remember my grandmother making pickled peppers when I was really little. Funny how those are still some of my favorite things. To this day, if I want them I must make them myself, the stores' just don't taste the same. Your train set will be the gift of Christmas memories you give to your own family, something more precious than anything you could buy for them. They are very fortunate indeed. Merry Christmas, Mary

My mother made these at least 50 years ago. I don't really remember what they were like, but they're certainly old-fashioned. POPCORN BALLS 3 qts popped corn 1 cup sugar 1/3 cup white corn syrup (Karo) 1 cup water 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla Discard all imperfect kernels & put the popped corn into a large pan. Cook sugar, Karo & water ot the medium-crack stage (280Â° on a candy thermometer.) Add vanilla & salt. Pour over the corn, stirring with a spoon so that all kernels will be evenly coated. Shape the corn into balls, lay on waxed paper & wrap in waxed paper.~~ Below is another recipe for Caramel Popcorn Balls that got good reviews. sounds like a great project ! I will sometimes do script and stuff in faux cross-stitch over crochet, but that wouldn't work with popcorn stitch... they do have opaque white 'paint markers' at the craft store... but I would use a flat-tipped brush, either a 'fabric paint' brush (short, stiff bristles) or a white nylon bristle, and a good-quality fabric paint (Jacquard is ideal, so-soft is also good) in both cases, let dry, toss it in the dryer on high for 10-15 minutes, take it out, touch up any blank spots, and then toss it back in the dryer for a second round.

sounds like fun! These are FANTASTIC! Especially if you can manage to serve em warm....but if not, they're great anyway. We had them last year at a Guy Fawkes bonfire and I was hooked. I've made them so many times since. Bar Nuts From The Union Square Cafe Cookbook, HarperCollins, 1994 These nuts won The New York Press award for "best bar nuts in New York." Every afternoon at about 4:45, a piping hot batch emerges from our ovens and is sent out to the bar, where the sweet rosemary fragrance wafts throughout the restaurant. Though they don't have a television set at they're bar, these nuts would probably be a hit in your living room accompanied by a football game and some ice-cold beer. Yields 5 cups Ingredients Â 1/4 pound each peeled peanuts, cashews, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, and whole unpeeled almonds or 1 pounds unsalted, assorted nuts. Â 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh rosemary Â 1/2 teaspoon cayenne Â 2 teaspoons dark brown sugar Â 2 teaspoons kosher salt Â 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Toss the nuts in a large bowl to combine and spread them out on a cookie sheet. Toast in the oven until they become light golden brown, about 10 minutes. 3. In the large bowl, combine the rosemary, cayenne, brown sugar, salt, and melted butter. 4. Thoroughly toss the warm toasted nuts with the spiced butter and serve warm. I agree with lindac, "what a beautiful little cook"! I'm so glad the recipe worked out and I hope you find lots more recipes from the web site to make together in the future.

Here is a recipe we use in a kid's class at the public library this time of the year you might like to make together.

PUMPKIN PUDDING

1 can (15-oz.) canned pumpkin
1/2 t. pumpkin pie spice
1-1/2 c. milk
3.5-ounce package instant vanilla pudding (sugar-free will also work, if desired)

1. Mix pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice together in a bowl with a wooden spoon.

2. Slowly stir in the milk. Mix well.

3. Add the instant pudding mix and stir slowly for about one minute until it thickens.

4. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator.

5. SERVE!

(Note: We like to put the pudding in tulip-shaped ice cream glasses, or other individual dishes, then refrigerate them in individual servings. For a special treat, top the pudding with granola or cut fall leaves out of pastry, bake, and lay a pastry leaf on the top of the pudding just before serving. If you like, serve with whipped cream and garnish with a baked pastry leaf in the whipped cream.

I use to make these every Halloween in Orange and Red -- Blood and Gut Balls. The kids LOVED them. I see that you've already made some popcorn balls, but maybe this might work for next time.

Flavored Popcorn Balls

* 3 quarts popped popcorn

Bring to a boil:
* 1 cup white corn syrup
* 1/2 cup sugar

Add in:
* one 3 oz. package Jello gelatine in any flavor
Remove from heat. Stir to dissolve.

Pour over:
* 3 quarts of already popped corn, mixing well.

Makes 20 small balls.
