Added Benefits of Being Organized?

Anybody experienced this? I've noticed that since I've cleaned and decluttered the biggest part of my closet I have "rediscovered" two pairs of shoes that I really like and hadn't being wearing. Also have started wearing a couple of tops and pant outfits that I hadn't thought to put together before. Kinda like getting "new" clothes for nothin'! LOL

By keeping my refrigerator cleaned out and better organized I can save money by utilizing the leftovers better and not letting them get shoved to the back and forgotten.

Man, I feel virtuous! Just wish I could achieve that feeling in a lot of other places around here! LOL

Definately less food waste. Definately less money waste buying what I already have.

Found time and energy is my biggest benefit. I know where to find what I need. I know what's in the house, what needs replacing (as in worn out underwear), there's no frantically looking for needed items.

Since we now have a good maintainance system in place, the house takes no time to clean. Which leads to easier social interactions. Company or friends can come and it means no extra work.

It's kind of like manners for the house. Everyone else in the house knows where everything is and what to do with stuff. When I announce "room zoom" right before bedtime it takes my kids just a few minutes to make sure their items are put away and backpacks ready for the morning.

Time not spent chasing my tail...but doing what needs to be done and then plenty of time for what we want to do.

I'm seeing the money and energy savings too.

The food saver thing for me is too plan the meals for 7-10 days at a time. I buy what I need and don't just have extras sitting around going bad. It means less random snacking too.

I got rid of several bags of toys a few weeks ago. The kids aren't throwing them in the floor and just leaving them. I'm getting up to a less messy house each morning. The toys are kept in the boys bedroom. I cleaned the bedroom up while I'm was at it and added shoe racks and any toys that didn't fit into the organizers or one toybox. DH made a deal with the boys that they each get $1 if their bedroom is clean at inspection on Wednesday night. So far, they've made $3 and are proudly picking up stuff that is in the floor. The stuff they drag out to the living room during the day can be cleaned up in less than 10 minutes.

I can almost have friends drop in without feeling embarrassed.

I just got off the treadmill so thot Id take a break. This cold, damp, dreary day is really affecting me. Im trying to stay busy so I dont get into food I dont need to be eating. Im going to reward myself for staying good by watching a tv show I recorded this weekend while Dh was watching football. Love that DVR. I saw a curio cabinet at Costco Id love to buy. Took DH to see it and am hoping hell agree its worth stretching the budget for. I even measured the van and itll fit! Well see. Eden, Im so glad Eve is doing well and I hope that continues. Im a little concerned about Bullet. He is now 9 lbs., down from 12 thats quite a weight loss in 2 yrs. As instructed, Ive been watching his eating, drinking, etc.,habits. He didnt eat much over the weekend. Since he deposited a fur ball this am, so Im hoping that is what the problem was. He just seems older and slower to me since his surgery. Im hoping its just effects from the anesthetic. Janie, it was good to hear from you. Hope your Mom continues to do well and recovers quickly. Marlene, don't work too hard. Those trade shows are killers. I always needed at least 2 wks. to recover -- one from the pace, the second to catch on stuff that accumulated back in the office. Deanne, I agree w/Marlene. I think you look wonderful. Why dont you give it a rest and see of you just need to let your body catch up. I truly think that might be what's happening. Cynthia, count me in for the group rate on a plastic surgeon. I need a full body lift, pulling everything up by my scalp, lol. I, too, love the picture I got of you and the kitties basking in the sun coming in the kitchen windows. And I know what you mean about kitties and paint. I was doing some staining touchup Sun. and a really nosy kitty was doing his best to get into it. I dont think "walnut stain" would improve his appearance at all! It's not his color. When he was a kitten, he fell into the wallpaper paste bucket. Now, that was a real mess! Yep, I know the pros and cons to the control freaky thing. As Da would say, Le Sigh! Martie, thats great about your new "favorite client". It sounds like you make your job interesting. Cant wait to hear how the Logees get together goes. Wish I could come. Thanks for sharing the info on your DB. I feel very badly for you having to take on that responsibility. But it has to be a huge relief to your parents. Listen to marylandmojo--Turmeric is slowly being recognized as an important antioxidant. It also works on arthritis. The Prostate Cancer web site has recognized it's value in treating men on andorgen therapy (it stops swollen and sore breasts which is one of the side effects of the therapy)! Maybe it will women with hot flashes--who knows--it's a natural food and hopefully with few or no side effects! Try it--lets see how many ways it can help us. I'm taking it daily for arthritis. No huge changes yet--it's only been 3 weeks--but I'm feeling improvement. Turmeric taste awful but if it will reduce the swelling in my arthritic joints and make the pain go away--what more could I ask? I can buy it in the grocery store--it's inexpensive and why don't we hear more about it? Because it's not profitable to the drug companies and doctors.

Brad, For every study that says organic produce is not any different than conventionally-raised produce, you can google and find one that says it is. You'll note that this is merely a summary study that looked at previous studies. There is no way to know who funded each and every one of those previous studies so we cannot know if they were truly independent or were funded by someone who had a vested interest in the outcome. We also don't know if they merely raised oganic crops in depleted unimproved soil that was previously conventionally farmed (and, thus, stripped of many nutrients by prior crops) or if they raised it the way most serious organic producers do--in soil that is continually replenished through the additive of organic matter. This is an area of huge controversy because the agricultural industry that produces/markets food raised conventionally with chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides doesn't want for the organic food industry to grow and compete with them. Those involved in organic food production, of course, want to prove that their techiques produce healthier food that is better for the consumer. For several decades, studies have shown the organic produce tests higher in the content of some minerals and vitamins. That has been proven many times, although I suspect it would vary a great deal depending on the soil the food is raised in. If the organic producers are continually adding compost, manure, green manure crops and other sources of nutrition to enrich their soil, then there is no doubt in my mind that the soil is producing healthier crops. One thing we all have to remember is that produce contains from dozens to hundreds of phytonutrients and phytochemicals, many of which have not yet been isolated well enough to be measured or studied. With the various phytochemicals that are being studied using cutting edge techniques, scientists are finding that organically raised produce does have higher levels of those phytonutrients. My personal opinion is that I believe organically-raised produce is healthier as long as it is produced in soil whose own nutrients are regularly replenished. I prefer organic produce anyway, on the basis that it does not contain residues of synthetic products used by the farmers. I do not eat 100% organic but I eat organic as much as I can, and I am not a vegetarian. I don't even garden 100% organically, but I try to grow as organically as possible. This area of study is likely to remain controversial forever and it really is all about who is going to grab a larger share of the market--conventionally-raised produce or organically-raised produce. Like all industries, the opposing parties are battling for market share and each will continue to produce studies that favor their side of the story. It is sort of like the Dish Network--Direct TV battle for market share, only as applied to food. Each side is going to tell you what they want you to believe and each side will claim they can prove they are "better". The battle between the two sides is part of a larger cultural phenomenon known as Food Politics. And just like regular politics, Food Politics can be very ugly. I say go with your gut feeling and trust your own intuition. There are lots of good books out there about food and how it is raised and marketed. Some of the best of them are by Michael Pollan, who himself is a serious gardener. One of his more recent books is "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" and I have read it and re-read it several times and highly recommend it. Another book of his that is great is "The Omnivore's Dilemma". If, like me, you raise a significant portion of your family's veggies (and, to a lesser extent, fruit), then another great book is Barbara Kingsolver's account of her family's effort to eat locally for one year and to raise as much of that food themselves as they can. It is called "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral" and it is a very inspiring book. Since reading it, I have been working harder to raise more of our produce (and eggs!) although I am still a long way from producing all of it or even most of it. I find the food we raise ourselves tastes better to us, and even when friends or relatives eat at our house, they will comment on a particularly tasty dish and say "you raised this yourself, didn't you"? People who've eaten our eggs say the same thing. To me, both gardening and raising eggs is all about knowing what specifically is going into the food we eat and also about having the freshest, best-tasting food possible. Labradors I'm still developing my rotate methods. I've been getting one of the blights and tried growing Caliente 199 mustard with mixed results. Since my garden was too small to rotate crops, I started a small new test plot. I grew 4 tomatoes there without problems. So the next year I started another, the third, new plot between a peach and an apple tree. That also was blight free, the following year the blight started up in the third plot. The second plot didn't have problems till the third year. So I'm working this year on a large 34x74' fenced garden. I won't be able to plant up the entire plot. In the first year I hope to plant potatoes, 24 tomatoes, and some pole beans. I may get some fall crops in later. In the second year, hopefully I'll get some land dug up to move the tomatoes and the potatoes to new spots. In the meanwhile I plan to just mow what's not ready to plant. In short I'm thinking 3 years to dig up this garden and then rotate on a 3 year cycle. I have 10 posts cut in the woods, one still needs hauled. It's a white oak 14 foot long and 5 to 6 inches on the bottom and 4 or 5" on the top. I have it up off the ground, hopefully it'll dry a little. I'm going to try a 2 wheel dolly tied to the bottom.

So many benefits ------ having friends and family come in --- and be welcome.

Having time to spend really enjoying a magazine or book ---- and NOT hiding from "fixing another mess."

Finding things. A big plus for me. I hate not having items "when I need them." And searching for them --- wasting time and effort.

Cleaned out the kitchen cupboards the other day -- discovered a wonderful bottle of herbs. Made salmon. Cleaned out the fridge. Made lots of veggies. Opened a bottle of wine. Lovely dinner -- and terrific leftovers too! (and tidier cupboards and fridge)

I love knowing what's for dinner each night - especially that I can tell the kids to "check the diary" when the dreaded "whats for dinner" questions keep coming :)

My finances are more organised, too, and that really keeps the spending in check!

My planner definitely keeps me going. Even on the busy days I feel less stressed, just because everything is written down and nothing is forgotten.

And if someone asks me if I'm free on a certain day, I can give them an answer RIGHT THAT MINUTE and not have to call them back.

P.S. And if someone asks me do to something that I don't want to do, I can consult my planner and say No. LOL "Sorry, I'm not available that day" I say in my sweetest voice.

It is a nice feeling to get rid of excess and find 'old' things you haven't used in a while! I did actually find a pair of shoes, last summer, that were buried under a pile of junk in my closet. Now I can wear them whenever i want!

Well, as we are putting together everything for the taxes, I've got about twenty receipts for stuff I've donated - that will be a nice deduction!

Another big plus - when something bad happens (I get the flu, the power goes out, the fence falls down) I don't feel that it is the end of the world. We had a blackout the other night and I knew just where the flashlights, candles, and matches were. When I was so sick I couldn't move, all it meant was that the laundry hamper was full and the floors needed vaccuuming. Didn't need to worry.

Also, less shopping! I dislike shopping and used to go out with a vague sense that we needed stuff. Now I know exactly what we need and just get that.

I feel more calm, and when I'm more calm everyone's happier.

I keep thinking (hoping) that dd will grow up with a sense of order, and that it will stick with her throughout her life. That would be a real gift.

I'm a long way from having a perfectly organized home, but I saw a study recently that claimed that children raised in a clean, organized home generally do better in school. I'm sure that there is truth to that, and what better benefit could come from having an organized home?

Adona, I believe it. My kids are both smart, but they are SO disorganized and undisciplined (not finishing classwork in class) that it's strongly affecting their grades.

My home isn't the worst, but it's always a struggle for me.

When I'm organized, I'm on time without being a lunatic. That feels good.

I'm going to print these out, cut them out, and put them in places that will remind me why it's worth the effort.

I'm so glad I read this thread. The benefits mentioned correspond exactly to my vision of being organized. I'm not totally there yet, but at least I know that my wish is not a pipe dream. Doesn't make life perfect, but oh so much easier to manage. I love the idea of not stressing if people drop by unannounced. Thanks for sharing, everyone. You inspire me.

I have gone back to work full time and all my pre-organizing has helped so much. Now I have priorities, like, cooking , cleaning, shopping and laundry. I spend so much less time looking for things. I may never have to clean out my closet again if I take care of all my stuff and don't bring too much new stuff home.

I can organize other things very well, outside of home. Even though I don't work, I do a lot of community/school stuff. When I take on a project, it's 110%. I keep it all together, papers in order, stay on top of the to do list. People will say "oh, that Stephanie, she is so organized!" They have no idea how limited it is.

I need to figure out how to move those skills to my own home. I don't seem to do so well when I'm not accountable to someone.

Stephanie, until last year, I was the same way. Since I wasn't working for most of last year and it was the first time that all the kids were out of the house, I forced myself to spend the time organizing everything in the house.

My husband used to never believe that at work, my desk was always orderly, I was always organized and on top of things and most importantly, knew where every piece of paper was. At home, I'd be searching for hours for any paperwork.

At home, I organized everything by mine, DH's and product, such as map box, photo box, stationery, etc. It just made it easier for me.

I just cleaned our bedroom, removed clutter, put away all laundry and jewelry, stripped the bed and flipped the mattress, put on clean mattress pad + sheets + blankets + duvet + pillow protectors and cases, dusted, vacuumed, washed curtains, cleaned mirror and dresser, and shelved books back in study.

Cannot wait til honey and I can enjoy it all tonight. I will be so focused! Added benefits for both of us.

There are wonderful reminders here to encourage me to stay the course and don't give up on myself. I am now paying closer attention to Flylady, and it really makes a different, even if it only means adding one or two things to my day. Baby steps are the only ones that I can take now, life is so complicated that I never have time to dedicate to sweeping projects.
