I've tried the Sunday gravy thing but I know it's not the "real deal"

Please share the steps you take ....'cause I know it's really not a "recipe".

I take 2 large yellow onion and dice them with 8-10 cloves of garlic whacked and chopped. In a very large pot I add 1/4 cup of Evoo and saute the onion almost translucent then I add the garlic. I use 4 cans Puree(Redpack) 3 cans of water(use empty Redpack Can) pour into pot mix and add 1/2 cup dry red wine S&P to taste and 1/4 cup sugar. I add 1 bay leaf and aprox 1/2 cup chif Fresh Basil. In a seperate fry pan I add 1/4 cup evoo and fry up the following...Meatballs,Sweet skinny Sausage ring,Braciole (Pork & Beef), Pork neck Bones and 2 to 4 bone in Pork Chops. As they fry and get a crust i just keep adding to the pot. Bring the pot to a low boil then reduce and simmer on very low for at least 4 hours. This is how i was taught by Grandma Spagnuolo (Hubby's Grandma) when I was a new bride. This is how we like it but everyone has there own idea of "Gravy". We always serve the meat is a big bowl and 3-4 pounds of macaroni depending upon how many come for dinner. Im sure most of you make it very similar to mine....REMEMBER to remove the Bay Leaf!!!

Eileen, your "gravy" sounds delicious. I don't make "Sunday Gravy" often but when I do I also add everything that you add except the Brociole.(Because I'm lazy). Instead I add short ribs along with the pork ribs or chops. And I usually add fresh chopped Italian parsley along with dried basil to the sauce and add the fresh basil near the end of cooking.

Thanks to you I have a major craving for this meal. Maybe on my next day off I'll put a pot on to simmer.

That's the one in Folsom, Pa.
About $.80 a can, last time I caught a sale they were $.67

I don't know if they all will have the sale.
You could ask your local Pathmart manager , if they are having the sale too.
Tell him you missed the last one in Folsom, a week ago.
I'm going to pick up 2 cases, just in case.

That's how everyone did it. Like Grandmom !!!
I just dump everything in at one time, for 55 years now.
Great every time.

My Daughter does like Grandmom but something is missing ?
Everyone likes mine better.

You certainly had the right idea yesterday; it was a perfect day for making gravy. Yours is similar to mine except I am not a big fan of brasciole and use regular sweet sausage (no fennel), country ribs, and meatballs.

There's a Guiseppe's in Port Washington, not far from my office, although I prefer A&S and in a pinch, North Shore Farms.

Love, love, love the fresh ricotta. My Dad used it this year to make the pizza rusticas which were a bit richer than mine. I also used it to make those prosciutto hor d'oeuvres recently posted. Nothing better than fresh!

Lou, I live about 5 miles from the Red Gold outlet store that sells Tutto Russo. They own Tutto Russo. You can buy a case of 6 gallons for $12.00. Red Gold is an Elwood, Indiana tomato facility, the largest family owned in America. I went to the outlet store last week and bought diced tomatoes and ketchup, a case each.

Marilyn : Funny you mention Red Gold my Dad,nephew and hubby became addicted to there Ketchup while on vacation at The Kentucky Derby....we cant get it in NY although you can get Tuttorusso anywhere. One KF was kind enough to ship me a case several years back its so much better than Hienz! As far a Bracciole is concerned my market has it ready made and tied ready to fry and put into the gravy. So that takes away alot of the work! Cookingrvc: I love Uncle Guisseppies i go to Smithtown location and I too use the sweet sausage with no Fennel (Im not Fennel fan) I dont care to much for braciole but my Italian Sister in laws love it so I always put it in the gravy. Red Gold is my favorite too, Eileen. They make a spicy hot ketchup called Mamma Selita's, I may not have that spelled right, but that is how is sounds. I have not tried it. I like going into the outlet, but you have to buy by the case and they are only open on Wed. and Thurs.

I'll have to wait until next week, to get them at Pathmart
and pay $.80 a can.

I'm glad to see some on the CF, are still using the same brands that I use.

Lou, no I did not move here to be near Red Gold. The family lives around these parts and they are a nice family. We do have several tomato fields about. I saw them picking tomatoes today, they pick the whole plant anymore with a machine. I guess they ripen all at the same time. I don't use a whole case at the same time. When I buy a case of something, I divide it up with my daughters. You can go to Red Gold's website and read about the family and Red Gold.

I forgot to hit Submit when I went out, so there are a few Threads in between.

Eileen....God Bless your generous heart! Thank you so much for sharing! My DH comes from an Italian family (and I do not), but some of their recipes are considered "family secrets" and are not allowed them away from the immediate family circle.

Where is the outlet? I live in Chicago and it might make a nice day trip?

Lisbet its so funny you say that there always a "big" secret...but grandma liked me so she shared....Now 17 years later my wonderful MIl whos a fantastic cook sings my praises to all the "old fazools" (LOL) in the family about her Irish daughter in law and how i cooked better than her...now thats a compliment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But Redpack is not a brand sold here.
So could you please say what size the cans are?
And could you suggest a brand that might be comparable?

Barbara 48, The outlet is on North 9th Street in Elwood Indiana. If you come in from the west on state road 28, when you come to Elwood, go to North 9th street and turn north. The address is 451 North 9th. Hours Wed. and Thurs. 9:00 till 12:00 noon and 12:30 to 4:30. Phone (765) 754-7527 ext. 3331. They do not take charge cards. Just cash or good check. The phone goes to the main office in Orestes but the extention rings the outlet in Elwood. You place your order, pay for it and they load it for you. I hope this helps.

Oh rusty one:
In the threads above she said the cans were 1 gal.
The cans in the markets are 28 oz.
That is a good deal for someone who lives nearby.
Comes to $.48 for a 28 oz. can.

Other Tomato's packed by Red Gold are Red Pack and
Tuttorosso.

Others are 6 in 1 ,Contadina, Cento, Hunt's, and Diane's.
And many others.

Four gallons of puree and 3 gallons of water? ?
I don't have a pot that big.
That much of anything would last for life & three days after around here!

There are two grocery stores here.
Not a big choice of anything.
But they do carry Contadina, so guess I'll try that.
But not in gallons. :>)
