Help! Emergency paint help needed for Center Hall Colonial house

HI I picked out all my colors for a colonial center hall house we are building. I'm worried my paint colors are a problem. I have green silk curtains that I want to reuse in this house so I'm painting the dining room green and glazing on top. I picked out a SW Simply Irresistable paint color for the whole house (open floor plan). But the living room right across from the dining room I'm painting the same color as the whole house but glazing it to make it look more gold tones. I'm worried this will make the house look choppy. Do you usually paint the living and dining room the same in a center hall plan house? Thanks for all advice. My decisions need to be made in the morning.

I can't think of a reason why you couldn't use more than one paint color as long as the rooms aren't running into each other as in an open plan house. In fact, different colors, as long as they harmonize with each other, will make for a more interesting house.

I have a center hall and the hall, DR and LR are different colors. The hall is SW Jersey cream ( a pale yellow),
The LR is a pale pale green and the DR is red above the chair rail and Jersey cream painted anaglypta below it.
I have persian rugs in each room that have the three colors in it so it ties the colors together. The pale green paint color was inspired from the green in the LR rug.
It flows well together.

I'm not a big fan of red, but if you love that color, go for it. I don't know where you live, but Sherwin Williams will help you pick out colors if you buy (I believe) a $75 gift card. They will send a color specialist to your house. What I did was pay for an interior designer to come in and advise. She was $125 an hour, and I just needed an hour with her. She did great picking out colors and giving me advice on the rest of the house, so maybe look into that.

Your home is gorgeous! I spent a year renovating a 1939 petite colonial (1700 sf). In my case, I had to add a kitchen as the old one was tiny had badly renovated in the 1990s. A few workflow tips in your newer post with the kitchen. I'd put the prep sink at the range end of your island, instead of at the dining room entrance end. Think about it -- you chop, then have to carry the food to the range. Please rethink that desk in your kitchen. I've had "work/message centers" as built-ins in previous homes, but here in my new old house, I'm using a piece of furniture -- a drop-front secretary where I can close up the mess when guests arrive, but sit there and work (printer in the bottom). You can put the secretary in any room. Where your desk is located, it's not a drop station for bringing in the mail, schoolbooks, etc. For aesthetics, please try to make the kitchen fit the spirit of the house. White cabinets would likely fit it better than stained wood. Consider having at least a few glass-front upper cabinets. If you turned that desk space into storage, you wouldn't need to line the walls with upper cabinets. It's amazing what you can fit into a "hutch" look that would fit the aesthetics of your home. I had hutches flanking my farmsink in my previous home. One for pantry items, the other for dishes. My current 1939 home new renovation -- hutches -- the one of the left of my paneled fridge is for dishes and the one one the right side is filled with food items stored in canisters and containers. My kitchen is only 12x12 as the dimensions are in keeping with the original room sizes. The dining room is 12x12 and the living room is 12 x 21.

I am a HUGE fan of Timberlane shutters in PA. The quality of these shutters is extraordinary. I have had them on my house now for 16 years - had them painted by my local painter, still look great. My DD got them about 3 years ago and they now offered the color she wanted in a factory paint job. The rep told me that these same shutters had been on the outside of their building in PA (harsh winters there!) now for 19 years and still looked great. One of the things they offer is copper guards that slip right on top of the shutter. Shutters tend to rot from water getting into the seams where the shutter dowels are held. This prevents that from happening. I think this is part of their success. Yes, they are expensive, but they will last for many decades with little if any maintenance required.

I lived with a floorplan almost identical to that for the last 16 years. My living room was the same dimensions as yours too. What is your sunroom was an outdoor porch on mine. I just sold the house a week ago. I would never, ever shrink that living room. It was fabulous and perfect. Choose one of the doorways to the sunroom as your entrance/exit to that room, and keep the french doors shut on the other side.

The very reason I got a center hall colonial was to be able to paint the living room (dark bronzy green) and dining room (warm peppery red) different colors. The foyer is a light yellow. The LR and DR have the same drapes (a taffeta plaid in green/red/gold/coral), with harmonious oriental rugs, which tie them all together.

I personally think that if it's not open plan, anything goes.

I have the same style house, with different colors in different rooms. Pale gold in LR, a pale creamy terracotta in the DR, and a sage green in the kitchen. Beige in the foyer. To be honest, it would never occur to me to paint every room the same color in any style of house!

All you center hall colonial people! -- I'm drooling over your houses. To me that is THE BEST house there is you lucky dogs! LOL.

We had one. Once. 15 years ago. LOVED IT. And the DR to left had jacobean wallpaper above and burgundy paint below, the chair rail, and the LR to the right was painted a soft peachy off-white.

It looked beautiful, best house and decor we've ever had. So I agree with everyone else that's a perfect thing to do, you are right on target skd2. Enjoy that new house!

My last house was a center foyer plan as this new one is too for that matter. In the last house I had yellow buttercreme walls in the LR, & the DR was a toile blue & white paper with yellow accents and the foyer I had a small matchstick stripe with blue, yellow & white. It all coordinated well. In my new house, I stayed on the same paint strip but moved up & down. Foyer & Lr are Ivorie & DR is restrained gold. It can work.....just takes some thought on how to coordinate & overlap the colors from room to room. Good luck with your painting! Bonnie
