They're to stop slamming, not only for little fingers!
If you were kicking it with your hip, it would just be noisy.

The doors are a completely different mechanism and don't work that way. They just slow the slam.

Sometimes mine don't 'catch' either. We have been in the house 4 months. I don't know what brand mine are & no idea if they have to be broken in. Maybe there's just not quite enough closing momentum when it reaches the 'catch point'? I just give the offending drawer a little tap and it finishes closing.

Ours sometimes need a little push. So worth it for the confidence about little fingers.

Do you have the side extension closers or the undermounts? I've noticed that while our undermount drawers close perfectly and smoothly (like the upper doors), the side mounted drawers are kind of 'sticky' like you describe.

Our trash pullouts and the rollout trays in the pantry are sidemounted and they are the stickier ones. All the other drawers are smooth and easy to close. So I'm thinking their might be something operationally better in some drawer closers than in others?

I'm interested in this. What kind of soft close do you folks have? I never liked them because it always seemed like I pushed the drawer in, it wouldn't engage, and I would have to shove the door closed against the "soft close" resistance. I wanted the cabinet estimate without them, actually, since I'd heard the hardware was pretty expensive. What I found is that they are "standard" at my cabinet place and that it would be more expensive to take them out than to leave the standard in.

Is there a particular soft-close brand that is generally thought to be really good at "catching," or really stubborn about it?

Our cabinets arrived last week. I've been playing with some drawers. I find them harder to open than close. They seem to glide close nicely but need a little more pull to open than a regular drawer does. Are yours like that when you open them too? It may be because we have full overlay cabinets and I can't get a good pull on them to start with though.

I'm not sure whether our soft-close glides relaxed a little, or whether my husband and I adapted to how hard we have to push them to get them to close, but I do remember that things seemed weird right after installing. The fact that I couldn't flick a cabinet door open, but had to have my hand on the handle past that point (you know, if it's within 20 degrees or so of closed it self-closes, but if it's more open than that it self-opens). I wouldn't be surprised if the hinges were especially stiff at the beginning, BUT this was my first soft-close kitchen, so I'm sure a lot of it was just me adapting. Same thing with the drawers, but less so, probably because we followed the suggestion in this thread about putting a slight upward tilt on the glide rails to assist in closing. It seems like a good idea, I think it helped with exactly this issue, but I have nothing to compare it to.

I'd give it a month. You'll adapt your motions, the glides will get broken in a bit. Maybe that will make enough difference, but if it's still bugging you, maybe it would be worthwhile to consider moving the back of your glides down by 1/16".

Ours are brand new - working on the molding etc but played with the cabs and drawers and they are not stiff at all - just right!

ours also were just installed and work really well. I know there are several adjustments you can do to them...wonder if one of them is the "grab"? Might want to ask your installer?

I've never had them and I LOVE them!
