'Z' is for....

I don't think we ever finished the alphabet pictures enjoyed by many posters that was started last fall by clairdo2. "Z is for..." should have appeared during the 12 days or so before Christmas. Here is my contribution for that forgotten letter "Z".

Z is for...Zebra

A great example of scrollsaw art. My sister's daughter-in-law found him at a craft show and knew that I would give him a good home. I love him, a great addition to the rest of my collected wildlife.

Mammie, thanks for loving my zebra. In the rocking chair is a throw with a picture of our daughter woven into it. We lost her 4 1/2 years ago.

Well I've had success, even in zone 3, with early September plantings of some of the quicker maturing crops you listed (arugula, radishes). Of course, they took longer than they would in the spring, and some of the radishes tasted pithy from multiple cycles of freezing and thawing. But it was fun to scrabble around in the half-frozen ground for the last of those red jewels.

I am located in north central Arkansas, in the foothills of the Ozarks. Last year I had to have 6 dumptruck loads of soil brought in and spread. Our yard was red clay. I spread bermuda grass seed and sprigged even though it was late summer. I think it might have survived if we hadn't had so much rain in the last few months. My yard still has water standing in several places. It has literally drowned the grass. Now all I have are wheat stalks, a very few runners of bermuda and MUD. So my husband said lets just go with sod. Today I measured the front yard and it is 10,200 sq feet. I already have bermuda on a hillside and it done wonderful, but yes it required lots and lots of mowing. My intial idea was to have bermuda and then overseed with a rye grass to keep it green in the winter. So I am really open about what type of grass. I just want grass instead of clay or mud. If you will remember I have four dogs. So having grass will help keep my house a lot cleaner. And I won't have to give so many doggie baths. Also I have a wet weather spring on the upside of the yard. When we built our house my husband dug a ditch and filled it with gravel to keep the water off our house. He connected it to the french drain. Now with the top soil I had brought in, the water runs down toward the house before it soaks down to the gravel. Any ideas on how to cope with this? My husband says we have to remove some of the dirt. Right now I have to much water, but I know this summer will be dry. And then I am going to wish I put in a sprinkler. But that is a whole other topic. Thanks for the help! Sorry so long.

"if this accurately represents tree hardiness, a number of trees deserve colder ratingscolor>" Let's look at which trees those might be.... From experience (three winters) I would say Picea breweriana is quite happy in my zone -- versus the Z6 designation above. Especially this year, the new shoots are extra long ! By contrast, I would probably move Pinus thunbergii from Z6 to Z7 -- no end of grief with this one (yet). My Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata Aurea' is doing a lot better, despite being rated the same Z6. That Z8 rating for Sciadopitys verticillata seems totally out of whack with what I've been told recently on this forum, although I have no experience with it myself. Z7 for Picea sitchensis seems a bit overblown too.... and probably likewise for Cephalotaxus harringtonia. And Pinus contorta rated Z7?! ....give me a break ! Not easy to find a reliable list, that's for sure.

Hope you went with another brand! Even though this is old, maybe the information will help someone else. I purchased mine from Home Depot. Mine is less than two years old and the lights died. When I contacted customer service (4 emails, only one response) and then called (routed around their system) I finally did online chat and got a hold of someone. The person knew immediately what my issue was, i.e. it's a known issue and proceeded to mail me the parts to repair it myself. I did contortions on top of my range to try to swap out the parts, and they still don't work. Their customer service is a joke. They expect you to watch their videos and figure out what to do. I contacted them again to try to get a reference to a repair person, and they have none and basically said "I can't help you and good luck." SKIP IT. BUY SOMETHING ELSE.

Gazania, that's a lovely idea, having your daughter's picture woven into a throw. I'd love to see a clear picture of it.

Z is for ZEDONK

A Zedonk is a hybrid that is created by crossing a male zebra with a female donkey. If it had been a female zebra and male donkey it would properly be called a Donzi.

I photographed this one at a small private zoo near where I live, but they say these animals are quite common in petting zoos around the U.S.A. and they are kept as pack animals in souther Africa

Oh! I love the Zedonk.

For those who asked here is a closeup of the throw with my daughter. It was given to us by her huband shortly after her death. The photo it was taken from follows. I think the manufacturer did a great job. I'll call this....
