Pic of Lobster Roll Sandwich tonight

Live Maine lobsters were $6/lb. here in Calif. this week!! So, bought two five-pounders. One to share last night steamed and the other one to prepare for my first time making lobster roll sandwiches. Delish! Served with sweet potato fries. For those curious, a 5# lob. yielded 1.5+ lbs. of cooked meat (along with one hour of labor stripping all the meat off), enough for at least 6 people.

Okay, WHERE in CA are you? I've seen them this week (So Cal by San Diego way) for $4.99 each, but they are those "slipper" lobsters, previously frozen, and weigh 3 oz. each.

To my way of thinking, that's not a *lobstah* --- you got lucky! Wonderful photo, too!

From the Mac 'n Cheese thread... I'm another who believes Vermont Cabot white sharp cheddar is the best for mac 'n cheese. We love the tang much better than CB. I'm on Cabot's email list & I got a coupon for $2 off their Special Reserve Cheddar a couple weeks ago. Sure Pat, I'm not sure this will qualify for your Louisiana favorite but it is good tasting. Quantities are not exact. You can adjust to your liking. Olive Salad Spread pimento stuffed green olives,black Greek olives,Calamata olives --we get our olives from the olive cart in the deli. 2 spoonfuls of each olive type. Maybe 16 of each type? 2 TBS capers, drained 1 celery stalk, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 2 roasted red peppers in oil, chopped 1 sml red onion, chopped 2 tsp celery seed 2 tsp oregano 3 cloves garlic, crushed fresh ground black pepper to taste olive oil, start with 1/4 cup, you may need more Put all ingredients into food processor. Pulse a few times to break down the veggies into small bits. You want the consistency to be of a paste for spreading but still be able to see the veggies. Put the spread into a covered bowl and let marinate over night. It keeps for about a week in the fridge. Hope this helps in your search Pat! NancyLouise

Yes. Here's the link to how I basically do it: Crockpot Carmelized Onions I do find that keeping the onions in there a few more hours is OK. I also let them cook for awhile without the lid on so more of the liquid cooks out. Alternately, you could drain them before using and freezing. You have to start watching them closer once the lid is off and have to enjoy the smell of cooking onions. :) Some folks use an ice cube tray to freeze small bits of onions. I just use a plastic freezer container and layer the onions between sheets of wax paper.

Yes Mustangs! I have not forgotten our Trader Joes date either, life has seriously gotten away from me since I moved back. I have either been at the doctors which I spend a lot of time at, sick or recently and upcomming hosting friends who I haven't seen since I moved away 20 years ago and catching up on the activities I have missed so much like going to the State Fair last weekend and enjoying the Strawberry festival which will be here soon. I also plan to go to the MacDill airshow which was something my grandfather and I did together when I was a child. In April I have 3 straight weeks of company coming 1 set comes in first week of April leaves the 9th and the next set comes in the 10th of April leaving the 20th whew. I will be attending the Food and Wine Festival at Busch Gardens first week in March do you go to that at all? Also going to the Bands, Brew and Que at Sea World next weekend. The last weekend in March I do plan to do a Wholefoods and Trader Joe shop in Tampa I believe off of Dale Mabry to prepare for the incomming company I will have maybe we could plan to meet up then, do some shopping and have some lunch?

Hi Sooz: They are on sale this week (mostly giant ones - like 4-5-6 #'s) at my favorite Asian market which I go to periodically. Store is: Ranch 99 - a well-known chain of Asian markets. The specific one we went to is in Irvine (Orange Co.)off of the Jeffrey exit on the 5 Fwy. You have to call first and ask the price bec. each market has their own pricing. The one here in S. Diego is almost double the cost. Their selection of fish is incredible - prob. 30-40 diff. fresh choices + live fish in tanks, too.

Gardenguru: The recipe is so easy, you won't believe it! Go to your nearest Trader Joes (hopefully you have one near you) and buy their frozen sw. potato fries ... bake 'em in oven for 20 min.; they're delicious, crispy on outside and creamy on inside.

Marigene: Thanks, Mar. Re: the rolls - HEY! I'm in Calif. - we don't HAVE those kind of rolls, to my knowledge. These actually worked quite well: they are from Costco and are more than normal & substantial hot dog rolls with good flavor, not your typical rolls. Just grilled them in butter and voila!

Those TJ's sweet potato fries are delish..but they are batter coated..so out for those of us that eat Gluten or Wheat free...
But I did sneak one on sample day.. LOL

I DO have a Ranch 99 Market--Clairemont/Balboa area, between 805 and 163, closest to 805 freeway, I think. Woo hoo! I'll have to schedule a trip there, and thanks for the tip about calling first!

Yes, Sooz. Where exactly is that? I live in Oceanside/Vista area. If that's the one I'm thinking of closer to downtown area in San Diego, in the Asian district there, they almost NEVER reduce their high price on the lobsters. That's why we drive the 45 mins! But do call, you never know. Let's try and meet up some day, okay? I'd love that. Be sure to speak to someone that speaks good English. Try and ask the person who ans. the phone to find out the price - they usually spk. decent English.

And gardenguru: To my knowledge, to make the sw. potato fries, you just peel and cut them like regular potato fries and fry them. Perhaps I'm wrong? But I don't think so.
